The following guide is designed to help you decide if an MPA is for YOU. From the program search to the job prospects to the best schools, you will find all of that helpful information right here. And most likely after getting through this quick guide, you will feel better about your decision. Enjoy and good luck!
1. What is an MPA?
The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a professional post-graduate degree in Public Administration. The MPA program, which typically takes two years of full-time, post-baccalaureate study, prepares individuals to serve as managers in the executive arm of local, state/provincial, federal / national government, and increasingly in non-governmental and nonprofit organizations. It places a focus on the systematic investigation of executive organization and management. Instruction includes:The roles, development, and principles of public administration; Public policy management and implementation; The relations between organizational management and legislators; The public and non-profit budget processes and financial management; Personnel management focusing on civil employees; Administrative law; Professional ethics; and Appropriate research methods.
A graduate degree in Public Administration, which typically takes 2 years of full-time, post-baccalaureate study to complete, with some requiring additional time to complete a thesis, is designed for careers in leadership or on the management level.
In addition to preparing a person for a public service career, MPA degree programs are also appropriate for contractors or consultants who work primarily with government or non-profit environments.
You'll develop a solid understanding of the principles unique to public administration and nonprofit management and learn to successfully manage complex public programs. And you'll build personal analytical, conceptual and practical competencies.
The Master of Public Policy (MPP) provides training in policy analysis and program evaluation. A typical MPP curriculum includes the study of:Public decision-making and policy formulation; Microeconomic analysis of policy options and issues;Resource allocation and decision modeling; Cost/benefit analysis; Statistical methods; and Various applications to specific public policy topics.
2.Where do MPA’s work?
Most people who obtain an MPA pursue a career in both government and non-governmental/non-profit organizations. An educational experience that analyzes both the social and public sectors will give you competitive strength and allow you to maneuver in either arena, according to your own career interests.
22860040005
For example, you may start your career in fundraising for a non-profit organization, and later become a member of a governmental body. A public administration degree or public policy degree gives you great flexibility in changing career titles.
In many areas the MPA and the MPP programs tend to overlap and share similar core curriculums. Although commonly speaking the MPP will have an in-depth focus on policy analysis and design while the MPA degree will emphasize the operation and execution of policies and their projects.
Government JobsYou can work as a policy advisor, administrative officer, county manager or budget analyst, or jobs focused on constituent service. These careers require at least a master's degree and considerable background interest in the political issues of your chosen agency, division, or bureau.
Like a regular degree in management, an MPA or MPP can focus on organizational governance, finance, and administration. With this specialization you can look for and land jobs in:
State, local or federal government;
Public service sectors such as healthcare and animal welfare;
Non-profit organizations such as arts or international relief agencies.
You will provide services, set and implement policies, or evaluate social programs. You may be involved in research and development, marketing, financial planning, public relations, or human resource development.
Typical MPA Positions
,[object Object],3. Who pursues an MPA?
Secretary Hilda L. Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor on February 24, 2009. Prior to confirmation as Secretary of Labor, Secretary Solis represented the 32nd Congressional District in California, a position she held from 2001 – 2009. In the Congress, Solis’ priorities included expanding access to affordable health care, protecting the environment, and improving the lives of working families. Solis graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. A former federal employee, she worked in the Carter White House Office of Hispanic Affairs and was later appointed as a management analyst with the Office of Management and Budget in the Civil Rights Division.Hilda Solis
Graduate Degree: MPACurrent Position: Secretary, U.S. Department of LaborSource: ASPANET.com
Graduate Degree: MPACurrent Position: Secretary, U.S. Department of LaborSource: ASPANET.com
51403258255
Chip ReidReid is a Washington, D.C.-based news correspondent for NBC News, where he reports for quot;

Where can I get an MPA?
Start off by asking a few questions up front:

A. Do I Have to Leave Work to Become a Full-Time MPA Student?You don’t need to have a specific track in mind once you apply for a program, though it is helpful to know where you want to go with your MPA. Maybe you worked in a certain field that you would like to explore further or maybe your career responsibilities varied a lot and are rather broad and general. Here are a few factors to help you decide the type of program you might pick:
Location and Size: You should make a call whether you are able to move to pursue your Masters studies -- physically, socially and financially. Think about your preferences in geographical terms. Do you prefer urban or rural? Would you like to add internships or work experience at specific institutions that need to be in a specific part of the country? What’s the student to professor ratio of the program? Is the program part of a large or small institution?
Cost: Should you lean toward private or public university? Make a financial plan outlining different options for payment, whether that includes loans, savings, calculations of living expenses or even grants and scholarship are key in estimating how much you will need for how long. It is hard to say whether you should first pick the school and then look into financial funding. Prioritize what is important for you first. Would you sacrifice to complete a more expensive program at a more reputable school? Or would you be satisfied with a lower-ranked program with full financial support?
QUICK TIPPick the top 3 schools and their programs that you would accept right away if they would offer you admission. At least 3 of them should leave all of your concerns behind if the admission letter is on the table. In other words they are “almost perfect”. Then work your way through pros and cons of the other options you have. Make a list. What is most important to you? Great Location? Affordable tuition? Great network and career service?Network/Career: Graduate degrees are intense learning and studying cycles. Although technically your learning margin is smaller then during undergrad, it is usually the students in your cohort that contribute to the uniqueness and value of your experience. The class network that challenges you is at the same time the one that provides you with new perspectives, personal experiences and different approaches. In addition, you should consider the alumni identity and the potential opportunities to tap into others who would share the same alma mater. Look into the network each school provides and the graduate profiles they highlight. Explore different backgrounds and experiences others bring into the program and career opportunities provided by the school. A strong alumni network is usually a key ingredient in getting the job you want after graduation.
For the full list of schools offering an MPA program full-time please check out this resource provided by APPAM.
B. Can I Keep My Job and Pursue a Part-Time MPA Program?Being a part time student definitely has its benefits. You work with flexible schedules, lighter debt burdens and a potential to pay as you go.
But you may spend up to 4 years before graduating. However, part-time degree programs definitely remain the most popular option for working adults. If you intend on keeping your job to retain stable income (and potentially take advantage of some tuition reimbursement benefits), night school or part-time graduate school is the preferred choice.
Although much more affordable in the long run (since you can likely pay it down as you go with minimum loans or debt), taking three or four years to finish a degree program might sound unappealing. The reality of the situation boils down to two questions:
,[object Object],During tough economic times, a part-time degree might be the better option, at least in the beginning. Keep your options open. When you feel like you have enough room, switch to full-time status.
For the full list of schools offering an MPA program part-time please check out this resource by APPAM.
C. To Pursue an Executive Education Program in the MPA Field…or Not?Executive education usually means classes in the evenings or on the weekends, adapting to a working executive’s lifestyle. First of all, you should carefully define your terms. For instance, many schools offer executive education (of the non-degree variety), but not an Executive MPA, while others offer both executive education and a full Executive MPA.
3 Critical Trade-Offs BetweenExecutive and Traditional MPAs- Status within the corporation;- Educational goals; and- Future career goals
Non-degree executive education programs are much easier to be accepted. They usually require only a sponsorship commitment by the employer, a brief outline of work experience, and a billable credit card. Executive MPA programs, much like traditional MPA programs, require the full set of essays, transcripts, GRE scores, and application forms.
Consider your educational goals. Many of the customized courses offered by executive education providers have been a response to the growing demand of consultant-led seminars and school courses. You expect an immediate “take-away” from short-term seminars and you are willing to pay up for this privilege. Keep in mind that usually the corporate world invests in executive education as a strategic weapon in order to compete.
Also there is a difference how students are taught. While most full-time students embrace a bright range of general public administration knowledge, executive education students tend to learn better from each other experiences. This sometimes includes lessons taught through videoconferencing or online content delivery. Those who desire strong alumni connections, a classroom setting, the social aspects of working in teams and living amongst peers might not desire the more “virtual” aspect of executive education, where busy professionals are more global commuters than residents.
Consider your future goals. Consider whether it makes sense to take a 1- or 2-year “time-out” from a career in order to pursue advanced public management education. Executive education participants do not desire a break in their career, and can structure different options of part-time, evening, and short- term residential blocks that extend over two to three years. Executive MPA candidates usually remain with their companies and work during the full tenure of the program - they do not change employers upon graduation.
For the full list of schools offering an Executive Education MPA program please check out this resource by APPAM.
D. What If I Just Don’t Know?If you are unsure as to what is possible and what your actual options are, you should start off by scheduling appointments with program contacts and begin collecting the most important information.
Schools. Don’t hesitate to make cold calls to universities and schools you are interested in or you have heard of to inform yourself about programs, admissions, network and curriculum.
Work. Talk to your supervisor to see what is feasible and how flexible you can be. Maybe there is a career development support you did not know about. Or maybe your employer is willing to sacrifice some of your in-the-office hours so you can work from home, limit your commute and/or allow you to attend classes. Knowing where you stand in terms of your current job and career perspectives will ease the choice on which MPA program to pick.
Life Circumstances. The right timing can be key. Maybe you just made large private financial commitments (house mortgage, loans, credits etc.) and your professional responsibilities don’t require a higher graduate degree yet? Or maybe pursuing a MPA fits exactly into your personal life cycle? Well, going back to school is not only a professional decision it is also a personal one.
5.
