Soli is a new radar-based gesture sensing technology developed by Google ATAP that can detect hand motions and gestures without touch. It uses miniature radar sensors incorporated into small chips to detect micro-motions. Soli has applications for interacting with small devices and can replace buttons. It works through materials and does not require visual line of sight. The technology is being developed into SDKs and developer kits to enable new types of touchless human-computer interaction.

4. HOW IT WORKS
• The principle behind Soli is RADAR(Radio Detection and Ranging).
• Radar is an object-detection system that uses radio waves to
determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects.
• A modulated electromagnetic wave is emitted toward a moving target
that scatters the transmitted radiation, with some portion of energy
redirected back toward the radar where it is intercepted by the
receiving antenna.
• The time delay, phase or frequency shift, and amplitude attenuation
capture rich information about the target’s properties, such as
distance, velocity, size, shape, surface smoothness, material and
orientation.

array into an ultra-compact 8mm x 10mm package.

recognition pipeline which is hardware agnostic and can work with

9. ENDLESS APPLICATIONS—
RESULTS OF THE ALPHA
RELEASE
• There are many, many applications for this
technology— from civil engineering
(sensing cars at a stop light without
needing pressure plates) to
communications (including more precise
sign language interpretation) to medical
applications (more fine control for surgical
robotics).
• For now, however, ATAP has already had an
alpha release in October of 2015. They gave
about 60 developers in 14 countries access
to a Soli development kit, complete with
hardware and software.

OF SOLI?
• The Soli chip can be embedded in wearables, phones,
computers, cars and IoT devices in our environment.

inputs - there's no simple way to control these devices.

certain functions with electronic machines such as
