Google Maps started as a software application in 2004 before being bought by Google and becoming a web application compatible with several browsers. In 2005, Google Maps updated its satellite imagery of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to show flooding, though the before image was later replaced except in Google Earth. In 2006, a Java application allowed mobile access to Google Maps, which can also be integrated into other websites to show locations with zoom and view options.
