PROJECT REPORT FOR GOAT
FARM
Why Goat Farming
Indian economy is growing at a great speed and the
demand for food is increasing exponentially. Goat
meat that used to be a luxury for most of the
population is becoming affordable to a larger
number of people due to economic growth.
This has caused an increased in demand for mutton
in India and not enough supply to meet the demand.
This demand cannot be met by traditional method of
small scale backyard goat rearing in villages.
As the demand far exceeds supply, goat meat
prices have been increasing steadily. This
increased price has created a need and
opportunity for a large scale organized and
scientific method of goat rearing in controlled
conditions (Stall-Fed method). Improvement in
the quality of the breeds is a critical factor for
commercial success. All the above factors have
created a tremendous opportunity for
entrepreneurs to take a lead and be pioneers in
goat breeding business. There is huge potential
for commercial success for those that follow
advanced farming methods.
Advantages
In short, the advantages of Goat Farming
Business compared to other Agro related Business
are,
– Confirmed ever increasing Market price. This is
the only agro business in which the producers fix
the price for their products.
– Very low electricity dependency.
– Low labour requirement.
– High job satisfaction.
Breeds
The breed options available in India are Boer,
Thalacherry, Jamnapari (Jamunapari), Kanni,
Kodi, Salem Black, Sirohi, Badmasari, Beetal,
Karowli (Karoli), Sojat, Ajmeri, Osmanabadi
(Usmanabadi), Jakhrana, Kohilawadi, Barbari,
Bengal Black, Surti and many more.
Stall Fed Method
If anyone plans to do a Goat farm project in a controlled and
professional manner, Stall-fed method is the most practical and best
method to follow.
• In this method
• Goats are not allowed to graze in the outside. They are kept in a
Shed (Ground level or Elevated Slotted level) separately depending
upon the sex, Breed, Age and Weight.
• Bucks (male goats) and Does (female goats) are kept in Separate
rooms and allowed to mate at desired time with desired Bucks.
• Quantity and Quality of Feed can be differentiated according to the
Stage and Nutritional Requirement of different age groups of goats.
• Wastage of energy during grazing is avoided.
• Disease transmission is prevented from outside animals and outside
plants.
Basic requirements to start a Stall fed goat farm:
• One acre agricultural land for every 20 to 40 goats for cultivating fodder
• Water, Electricity and Labour availability to cultivate fodder through out
the year
• Investment capacity ranging from Rs.6 to 12 lakhs for 50 goat project
• A progressive mind-set to adapt to latest scientific methods and
technology
• Passion towards the business
Stall-fed method is highly intensive and there is a need for parent stock that,
• Respond to the increased nutrition
• Have high feed conversion ratio
• Twins and triples kidding character
• Adaptability to stall fed conditions
• Higher milk yield for the kids
• Higher weight gain, etc.
About Boer Goats
• Boer goat is known for its
fast weight gain, and
quality meat worldwide. It
is a native breed of South
Africa and it’s developed
and reared all over the
world for Meat purpose.
• In India its Reared in limited
numbers and it’s mainly
used to cross breed with
local breeds to yield
excellent Cross-breeds.
Comparison & Cross Breeding
• For a comparison if we see the Weight achieved by
different breeds in India in 1 year Age were,
• Local country breed: 15-18 kg.
• Malabari: 25 to 30 Kg.
• North Indian Breeds like Sirohi, Jamunapari (Mostly
Single kidding): 25 to 35 kg.
• Boer (South Africa) : 45 to 50 kg.(In Indian conditions)
• Boer-Thalachery Cross breeds (F1): 35 to 40 kg
•
• Cross Breeding: Though Boer breed is the best Fast
growing breed in the world, In India Its available only in
limited numbers. Female Boer goats are very rarely
available for Sale. So, cross breeding is the best option
For Developing Boer breed in India.
About Thalacherry goats
Based on our experience we suggest that a parent
stock of Thalacherry does along with Boer bucks in
50:1 ratio works very well. In this Method we can
optimize long term profit while keeping the initial
investment reasonable.
Thalacherry goats have the following advantages.
• Yields excellent cross breeds on crossing with Boer Buck
• Have high feed conversion ratio
• Twins and triples kidding character
• Adaptability to stall fed conditions
• Higher milk yield for the kids
• Higher weight gain, etc.
• Twinning/Triple kidding Percentage: 80%
• Average weight gain in one year :
• For Male: 28 kg.
• For Female: 23 kg.
• Thalacherry Goats when crossed with Boer Bucks yields 50 % Boer
kids.
• Average weight of 50 % Boer kids in one year will be
• For Male: 40 kg. or more
• For Female: 30 kg. or more
Housing for goats
• Plastic slatted flooring
• FRP Support channels
• Plastic (PP) feed trays
• Goats can be kept in
various types of housing
dependent upon various
factors. We have
provided details on the
methods we have
observed.
Advanced method
• Construction:
• Done without compromise in Quality, Durability and
Functionality
• Roofing: Using Galvanized Corrugated Roofing sheets, Over
MS Truss structure
• Partitions: Using Ms iron Rods and Angle Structures with
Epoxy Coating
• Flooring: Slatted Plastic Flooring Installed over FRP support
Structures (Non corrosive) / MS support structures
• Feed trays: Custom Made Plastic Feed trays with PP sheets
• Approximate construction cost per Square feet = Rs 400 to
450
Advantages of this method with plastic slatted flooring:
• Long life, up to or more than 10 to 15 years.
• Floors and Partitions Can be installed easily by inter-locking method within few days.
• Low maintenance, easily washable.
• Better hygiene, avoids fungal skin problems in Goats in Rainy season unlike wooden floors.
• Provides even spacing slats (16 mm) to felicitate easy droppings of dung (In wooden floors
after few months the reapers will shrink and bend which allows the “leg stuck” problems
in goats and particularly in kids causing fracture of legs)
• Extends 4 to 5 times long life compared with wood without repair work with recycling
option even after 15 years usage (as it is manufactured with virgin plastic raw materials)
• Heat resistant, and water proof virgin plastic material prevents damage from Sunlight
exposure and Wetness
• Anti-skid surface prevents from skidding of goats even in wet surface.
• Available in attractive colours which gives high-tech and Hygienic look to the farm.
• Galvanized corrugated Roofing Sheets Reduces Heat inside the Housing up to 60% over
Asbestos sheet
• MS Iron Partitions prevents Neck struck problems and Breaking of fencing within the
Housing Partitions
• Cleaning the Dung and waste can be done once in 3 months only and does not need Daily
cleaning.
• Difficulties: None, except a bit expensive over other methods.
Software Solutions:
• Computerised system to manage, operate and
monitor the project helps to maintain time bound
operation and monitoring of feed, medication,
health control and breeding.
