Social Responsibility Triple Bottom LineIncreasingly, co.docxjensgosney
Social Responsibility
Triple Bottom Line
Increasingly, companies judge their performance not merely on profits, but on the concept of the “Triple Bottom
Line” — or People, Planet, Profit.
TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE
As you build your business and your business plan, consider your triple bottom line and not just a financial
bottom line.
Social Ventures
Many entrepreneurs want to achieve more than merely profits with their companies. They want to do something
positive for humanity — improve the world, or make the planet a cleaner, greener place. These companies make
social goals an integral part of their company mission.
There are different approaches to being socially responsible in business:
1. Social ventures (or social entrepreneurship): creating a business with a primary purpose of achieving a social
or environmental goal but that embraces a profit motive and utilizes the best business practices. For example, you
may have a company that wants to build affordable housing for low-income families but still make a profit for
yourself.
2. Socially responsible companies: running a business whose products or services are specifically oriented not
toward a social mission but toward using business practices that achieve positive social goals. For example, you
may have a construction company building market-rate homes but primarily utilizing recycled and
environmentally sensitive materials.
“If the plan is well thought out and the social responsibility component is an added benefit, then it has the
impact of making everybody feel good. But if the social good detracts from the competitiveness of the
company, then it’s not considered a positive. For instance, a company building software and arbitrarily
deciding it wouldn’t sell to the military, confining its market, would be considered a negative.”

If you do want to create a social venture or social enterprise, you have a number of strategies for achieving
social goals. Consider the following five major strategies for social entrepreneurs:
■ Invent something. Create something new, which has not yet been developed, to meet a social goal.
■ Bring something to market. Take a new product that has been developed by someone else and create a
distribution, retail, or sales company to market that product.
■ Create new services. To meet a social goal, develop new services that haven’t been offered before.
■ Provide services. Offer established services that meet a social goal.
■ Adapt an existing product. Take an existing product but slightly change its properties or use so it can achieve
social goals.
“It’s a pretty tricky thing to put social responsibility in a business plan. As a venture capitalist looking at
the plan, you still say, ‘What does this mean for this team? Are they going to get carried away with this and

Promoting Social Investment in Canadian Social Enterprises: Successes and Ch...Social Finance
Presentation by Kate Ruff of Charity Intelligence at the ANSER Annual Conference in Montreal on June 3, 2010.
The presentation reviews Ci’s 2009 analysis of Canadian social enterprises, focusing on successes and challenges, and briefly looks ahead to the 2010 analysis.
Agora Enterprises presents the problem of the good jobs shortage and global poverty, the insufficiency of aid as a solution to poverty, and enterprise as a sustainable solution to poverty. Agora Enterprises has a vision to change the world through business and a mission and strategy to bring that vision to life through training, funding, supporting, and equipping entrepreneurs to start socially conscious businesses in underprivileged and developing communities across the globe.
Reciprocity between business and people, are important in a changing global context where the individual is empowered and big business often seen as exploitative, yet business is a vital part in creating wealth for people and societies. A social contract that sets the boundaries between the parties, is one way to create equilibrium, more so in emerging economies where society needs investment, yet was often exploited in the past. The credit crunch has increased the need for reciprocity.
These are my notes and key take aways from TNW Conference. I made this ppt as a report for work which is one of those big corporations that don't get off so easily here ;-) Have to say I agree with most of these views though, it was good to hear a different view.

A-16 CHAPTER 1
Requirements: Below is an essay from Roberto C. Goizueta, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola, in February 1997.
Please write a 2-page summary of the essay, double spaced.
Why Share-Owner Value?
At The Coca-Cola Company, our publicly stated mission is to create value over time for the owners of our business. In fact, in our society, that is the mission of any business: to create value for its owners.
Why? The answer can be summed up in three reasons.
First, increasing share-owner value over time is the job our economic system demands of us. We live in a democratic capitalist society, and here, people create specific institutions to help meet specific needs. Governments are created to help meet civic needs. Philanthropies are created to help meet social needs. And companies are created to help meet economic needs. Business distributes the lifeblood that flows through our economic system not only in the form of goods and services, but also in the form of taxes, salaries and philanthropy.
Creating value is a core principle on which our economic system is based; it is the job we owe to those who have entrusted us with their assets. We work for our share owners. That is – literally – what they have put us in business to do.
Saying that we work for our share owners may sound simplistic - but we frequently see companies that have forgotten the reason they exist. They may even try in vain to be all things to all people and serve many masters in many different ways. In any event, they miss their primary calling, which is to stick to the business of creating value for their owners.
Furthermore, we must always be mindful of the fact that while a healthy company can have a positive and seemingly infinite impact on others, a sick company is a drag on the social order of things. It cannot sustain jobs, much less widen the opportunities available to its employees. It cannot serve customers. It cannot give to philanthropic causes.
And it cannot contribute anything to society, which is the second reason we work to create value for our share owners: If we do our jobs, we can contribute to society in very meaningful ways. Our Company has invested millions of dollars in Eastern Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and people there will not soon forget that we came early to meet their desires and needs for jobs and management skills. In the process, they are becoming loyal consumers of our products, while we are building value for our share owners – which was our job all along.
Certainly, we – as a Company – take it upon ourselves to do good deeds that directly raise the quality of life in the communities in which we do business. But the real and lasting benefits we create don’t come because we do good deeds, but because we do good work – work focused on our mission of creating value over time for the people who own the Company. Among those owners, for exam.
