GOALS OF THE PERFORMANCE TASK:
GRASP Model
Defined Learning’s performance tasks put the students in the role of a specific career and asks them
to conducta performance task that followsthe GRASP (Goal, Role, Audience, Situation and Product)
model.
GOAL
 The teacher starts out the project by presenting the Goal (orbig idea) of the project.
 The Goal provides the student with the outcome of the learning experience and the
contextual purpose of the experience and product creation.
ROLE
 Next, the students are given a Role in a specific occupation that reflects the goal in real
life.
 The Role is meant to provide the student withthe position or individual persona that
they willbecome to accomplishthe goal of the performance task. The majority of roles
found within the tasks provide opportunities for students to complete real-world
applications of standards-based content.
AUDIENCE
 Then they are told whothe Audience is for whomthey will be working.
 The Audience is the individual(s) whoare interested in the findings and products that
have been created. These people will make a decision based upon the products and
presentations created by the individual(s) assuming the role within the performance
task.
SITUATION
 They are given a Situation they must solve.
 The Situation provides the participants with a contextual background for the task.
Students will learn about the real-worldapplication forthe performance task
PRODUCT
 Finally, they choose whichProductthey are going to create (such as a brochure, a
commercial, a 3D model or something similar) that solves the problem and gives
evidence of their understanding.
 The Products within each task are designed using the multiple intelligences. The
products provide various opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding.
Based upon each individual learner and/or individual class, the educator can make
appropriate instructional decisions for product development.
