Privacy by Design workshop for Developers - School for Computer Science (HBO-...Anne Marleen
This workshop was held several times during the week of 10th-14th of December as part of the semester 'Designing Mobile Experiences' at the department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries Amsterdam.
This workshop is dedicated to Developers and the development of privacy-friendly services & systems. It explores hands-on & playfully how a privacy-friendly service & system can be designed & developed, according to 8 Privacy Design Strategies & Tactics (Hoepman, 2018). For homework, we asked students to explore privacypatterns.org as well, in order to see if students were able to work from a strategic perspective towards an implementation plan. Another goal of this workshop is to explore if this theoretical foundation can become a potential language for both Designers & Developers, when they are creating privacy-friendly services & systems together.
The explosion of big data and digital information has transpired with little attention to ethical considerations of consent, privacy, and confidentiality. In our 00’s strive for sharing & connecting, we seem to have lost the potential quality of the private sphere, resulting in an ambiguous unlimited spreading of personal data to both governmental and commercial parties. At this moment we have no notion of the unintended consequences, algorithmic bias, nor do we know much about the troubling power of persuasive technology. Although GDPR has resulted in awareness and strategic implementation of privacy-sensitive information, we still need to look for methods & tools to implement privacy into our daily designer-development workflows, so that we can guide ourselves towards the creation of privacy-friendly systems that maintain the basic values of democracy.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Gurubhai
a traditional
businessman
Gurubhai hails from a
respected Gujarati business
family. It was his late grandfather
who laid the foundation of their
jewelry business, when he left his
native town and moved to the big
industrial city of Surat. Today
Gurubhai carries forward the
family legacy in the form of a
sprawling jewelry business.
Gurubhai is not very educated
but indeed he is street-smart. He
has earned his wealth through sheer
business acumen, building upon the
work done by his father. He
commands respect and admiration
whenever he visits his ancestral
town.
However, all this adulation has
not changed him as a person.
Gurubhai still prefers to travel in his
old Ambassador and wear simple
suits. At core he is still very
traditional and has not forgotten
his roots. His home gives a glimpse
into his family’s ethnic sensibilities.
His wife takes a keen interest in

visit, you will be enamored by their
hospitality. To add on Gurubhai
likes being in a thick network of
people. He prefers staying in the
central business hub of the city in
spite of the fact that he has
property in posh areas.
Gurubhai is a family man and
loves his daughter Latika. He leaves
no stone unturned to ensure the
comfort of his family. As he says,
“When Latika gets married; I have
promised her that wedding would
all be that she has dreamt of… I
will gift the man of her dreams the
finest car… there will not be any
scope of any unfulfilled wishes”.
For Gurubhai, if his prospective son
in law is wealthy and from a
respected family, then nothing else
matters.
Gurubhai has no qualms in
splurging for his wife and children
but wants maximum value out of
the proposition. When it comes to
his choice of car for gifting, he
wants a wide array of features
and options. If he thinks that he is
getting much more than what he is
paying for, he will take it.

6. Key Points
We aimed at simplifying the dashboard in terms of form, interaction and presentation of information.
An important consideration was how much information people can grasp at varying speeds. Based on this
observation we made detailed information appear only at low speeds when driver overload is relatively less.
We have used dynamic digital displays on the steering wheel and on the dashboard panel to minimize the space
required for controls on the dashboard
The on-steering display is easier to reach for the driver. Any interference with airbag is addressed by using thin-film
display technology like OLEDs or E-Ink, resulting in simpler mechanics
The on-panel display displays GPS navigation system and context-specific information like call details, audio details
etc. Any alert or warning related to vehicle parameters is also shown here
A second set of controls mirroring the ones on steering, has been provided on the panel for the convenience of
co-passenger but it would use the on-panel display. At a time either the driver or the co-passenger can access the
controls
7. Information Layering

Notifications from Twitter,
Facebook, webmail etc.
13. Second Level: On-panel display
The on-panel display is used for sat-nav and for
notifications like alerts, warnings, reminders etc.
It gives a condensed view when the user is occupied
with driving.
14. Second Level: On-panel display
Details are available only when the user prompts or
in an automatic manner at low speeds
