Glutamine has several benefits ranging from immune, stomach, intestinal health, to muscle recovery and repair. Pretty inexpensive supplement that's easy to add to your daily routine.
2. Glutamine is the most
common amino acid
found in your muscles.
Over 61% of skeletal muscle is Glutamine.
Glutamine consists of 19% nitrogen,
making it the primary transporter of
nitrogen into your muscle cells.
3. During intense
training,
Glutamine levels are
greatly depleted in your
body, which decreases
strength, stamina and
recovery. It could take up
to 6 days for Glutamine
levels to return to
normal—and Glutamine
plays a key role in
protein synthesis.
Studies have shown that
L-Glutamine
supplementation can
minimize breakdown of
muscle and improve
protein metabolism.
4. Glutamine is used
most often for
digestional issues
and weight lifters.
Glutamine is one of the most important
nutrients for a healthy digestive tract
because of its ability to maintain the
integrity of the intestinal wall. This amino
acid (in fact it’s the most abundant
amino acid in the body) heals all tissue
in the body, especially those irritated
tissues in the digestive tract. It is also
known as the calming amino acid since
it’s very effective at reducing anxiety, as
well as sugar and alcohol cravings.
5. Other common issues or reasons for glutamine:
● Weight lift 3 or more times a week
● Weight loss journey, protecting against muscle loss
● High stress life
● Frequently get sick or like to avoid it
● Anxiety
● Sugar or alcohol cravings
● Constipation or diarrhea
● IBS
● Poor immune system
● Low muscle mass
● Shock or extreme stress
● Trauma
● Major infections
● Frequent intense workouts
● Radiotherapy
● Chemotherapy
● Chronic gastrointestinal disorder
● Poor wound healing
● Slow recovery after workouts, or soreness
6. What Is Glutamine?
The main purpose is to serve as building blocks for proteins.
Proteins are crucial to the organs. They also serve other functions, such as transporting
substances in the blood and fighting off harmful viruses and bacteria.
Like many other amino acids, it exists in two different forms: L-glutamine and
D-glutamine.
They are almost identical but have a slightly different molecular arrangement.
The form found in foods and supplements is L-glutamine. Some supplements list it as
L-glutamine, but others simply use the broader term glutamine.
While L-glutamine is used to make proteins and perform other functions, D-glutamine
appears to be relatively unimportant in living organisms.
L-glutamine is produced naturally in your body. In fact, it is the most abundant amino
acid in the blood and other body fluids.
There are times when the glutamine needs of your body are greater than its ability to
produce it.
It's considered a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning that it must be obtained
from the diet under certain conditions, such as stress, injury or illness.
7. Why is it Important for
the Immune System
One of the most important functions of glutamine is its role
in the immune system.
If the body’s need for glutamine is greater than its ability to
produce it (stress, injury or illness), your body may break
down protein stores, such as muscle, to release more of
this amino acid.
Additionally, the function of the immune system can be
compromised when insufficient amounts of glutamine are
available.
For these reasons, high-protein diets, high-glutamine diets
or glutamine supplements are often prescribed after major
injuries like burns.
Glutamine also increases the micro-nutrient absorption and
effectiveness.
8. It Plays an Important
Role in Intestinal Health
Glutamine’s immune system benefits are related to its role
in intestinal health.
In the human body, the intestines are considered the
largest portion of the immune system.
This is because of the many intestinal cells with immune
functions, as well as the trillions of bacteria that live in your
intestines impact your immune health.
Glutamine is an important energy source for intestinal and
immune cells.
It also helps maintain the barrier between the inside of your
intestines and the rest of your body, thereby protecting
against a leaky gut. This prevents harmful bacteria or
toxins from moving from your intestines into the rest of your
body.
9. Effects on
Muscle Gain
and Exercise
Performance
Research has reported that glutamine
supplements may decrease muscle soreness
and improve recovery after intense exercise.
It has also been used to try to boost the
immune function of athletes.
11. Muscle recovery 10 to 15 grams of L-Glutamine a day, splitting the dose in 5
grams, 2 to 3 times day. You should also know that you
may already be getting some L-Glutamine in your diet from
other supplements you're taking. Many protein supplements
already have some L-Glutamine mixed into it, so read the
labels to know for sure. Best times to take L-Glutamine
powder is in the morning, after a workout, and at night
before bed time.
Suggestion is to split the doses up throughout the day 5
grams at a time. Be sure to start off with 5 grams and work
up to 15 per day. Like with any supplement start with the
smallest does and work up.
I personally take it 2x a day pre and post workout. The
greatest micro nutrient absorption is post workout.
12. For improved gut
health
5-15 grams has been shown to help seal and
rebuild the stomach lining. The trick is that
glutamine for gut health must be taken alone as
other amino acids will compete for absorption
and food particles in general will limit the
effectiveness of glutamine.
Suggestion is to split the doses up throughout
the day 5 grams at a time. Be sure to start off
with 5 grams and work up to 15 per day. Like
with any supplement start with the smallest
does and work up.
