Healthcare’s 2014 Community Leadership Award. Gloria is an advocate for individuals with life-limiting
illnesses, their families and members of our community, and is worthy of this recognition.
In March 2007, Gloria began her role as President and CEO at Arbor Hospice, a community-based, non-profit
organization that provides care to patients and families in seven southeast Michigan counties.
Arbor Hospice provides care for more than 2,000 patients and their families each year and grief support
services to more than 5,000 community members. As President and CEO, Gloria oversees all hospice,
palliative care, grief support services and hospice residential operations. Her responsibilities include
strategic planning, financial management, service delivery, business development and stakeholder
relations.
On June 11, 2014, Arbor Hospice will celebrate its 30th anniversary. As Arbor Hospice addresses
declining reimbursement, emphasis on public awareness on end-of-life issues, viability of philanthropy as
a source of hospice funding and in an increase in uninsured and underinsured patients, Gloria maintains
her resolve. She sets an example with strong leadership and compassion for patients and families
through advocacy, education and volunteerism. Gloria’s work in the community and dedication make
her worthy of Modern Healthcare’s Community Leadership Award.
For the past six years, Gloria has served on the volunteer board of directors for the Hospice and
Palliative Care Association of Michigan. She served as treasurer during the first four years, vice-chair for
two years and is currently the chair. In her role on the board of directors, Gloria has been responsible
for refocusing the goals of the state organization to better meet the needs of its hospice and palliative
care members as they face declining reimbursement and regulatory changes. Gloria has played a vital
role in developing the organization’s strategic plan, which included meeting with hospice and palliative
care organizations throughout the state and learning how patients and families could better be served.
In October 2013, The Department of Community Health eliminated the room and board Medicaid
benefit for hospice beneficiaries at eleven Michigan hospices. Without the room and board benefit, many
frail and elderly Medicaid beneficiaries returned to the hospital for care and failed to receive the
specialized high-acuity end of life care they needed. Michigan Medicaid dollars were being spent on a
more costly form of care – in a hospital setting. Gloria was nominated by hospice executives throughout
the state to be the spokesperson for the Medicaid Hospice Residence Coalition. She spent six months
meeting with legislators from across the state advocating on behalf of the hundreds of Medicaid
beneficiaries who needed specialized care provided in a hospice facility. Gloria spent one day each week
at the state’s Capitol, in addition to countless hours making phone calls and sending emails on her own
time. In March 2014, Gloria’s and others’ advocacy efforts were deemed a success when room and
board funding for Medicaid beneficiaries was replaced through a supplemental budget bill.

4. Our society is still uneducated and uncomfortable when it comes to death, dying and serious illness.
Physicians often do not have the time to initiate important conversations, or do not have them because
of the sensitive and uncomfortable nature of the conversation. Gloria’s passion for community outreach
and education has led her to conduct presentations on a variety of related topics to civic and religious
organizations as well as professional conferences and workshops. She has been featured in numerous
opinion editorials and articles in local media outlets in southeast Michigan. In 2012, Gloria was named
Educator of the Year by The Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care Organization during its annual
conference held in April. Gloria was selected based on her proven performance as an advocate and
educator in the hospice and palliative care industry.
Since 2009, Gloria has been a volunteer member of the board of directors and chair of the Strategic
Planning Committee for her alma mater, Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She has
played a vital role in expanding the reach of Catholic education to girls in Oakland County through
strategic initiatives and community education. As chair of the strategic planning committee, Gloria
explores how the economy impacts private education and has been instrumental in ensuring its
availability and affordability. Gloria has guided the school through funding challenges, a changing culture
that includes technological advances and a new teenage culture and an accreditation process.
Gloria is also an active member of Inforum, the leading professional organization focused on creating
strategic connections and accelerating careers for women throughout Michigan and the Midwest. She
serves as a steering committee member for Inforum’s Healthcare NEXT affinity group where she has
been responsible for bringing together women in the healthcare industry for education and training.
Gloria has helped plan the educational and networking events held four times per year and facilitate
peer support. She is also a member of Inforum’s Senior Healthcare Executives Roundtable, and has
served as the co-chair for the past year. The group provides senior healthcare executives a safe
environment for discussion, support and education. As the co-chair, Gloria helps plan and organize
group meetings. In 2008, Gloria was the recipient of an Inner Circle Healthcare award from Inforum.
In addition, Gloria is a member of the planning committee for the Washtenaw Health Initiative, a
voluntary, county-wide collaboration focused on improving access to coordinated care for the low-income,
uninsured and Medicaid populations. The effort includes representatives from the University of
Michigan Health System, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, health
plans, county government, community services, physicians and safety net providers. More than 40
organizations and 175 individuals participate. Gloria is currently chairing a committee of the Washtenaw
Health Initiative focused on reviewing and improving end of life care in Washtenaw County. The group
is discussing ways to ensure access to high-quality end of life care to everyone in the community and
establish collaborative models for consistent advance illness discussions.
Since 2008, Gloria has been a member of the Rotary Club, where she has previously mentored Rotary
students from the University of Michigan. In the past, Gloria has been a member of the Junior League of
Ann Arbor’s Community Advisory Committee and chair of the 2008 and 2009 Power of the Purse
Women’s Initiative campaign for the United Way of Washtenaw County. She has been a thrice nominee
for the Athena Award by the Women’s Council of Washtenaw County, and recognized as a Diversity
Champion by the Birmingham Bloomfield Area Race Relations & Diversity Task Force. Gloria was
named Champion of the New Economy by Junior Achievement of Southeast Michigan in partnership
with DBusiness magazine and News/Talk 760 WJR in 2011. The award recognizes business leaders in
metro Detroit who are contributing to moving the economy forward.
