3. INTRODUCTION
Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual
increase in the average temperature of the Earth's
atmosphere and its oceans, due to which permanently
changeoccursinthe Earth's climate.
4. CAUSESOFGLOBALWARMING
Most of the climate scientists are agree that the main
cause of the current global warming is due to the
"green house effect“
Theremaybe other causes like
Respiration
Mining activities
Rapid industrialization
Increasedin auto mobile use
9. DROUGHTSCAUSEDBYGLOBAL
WARMING
Adrought isanextended period of dry weather
causedby a lack of rain
Increasedtemperatures causemore evaporation
someplaceswill receive greater concentrationsof
rain and other placeswill receive less (droughts)
11. HOW FLOODISCAUSEDBY
GLOBAL WARMING
Aflood isanoverflow of water that submerges
land whichisusually dry
Therate of evaporation from the oceanseemsto be
increasing
13. DAMAGESOF2010FLOOD(OF
INDIA)
Affects the 79 Districtsof Country
20 Million people affected
1600 Casualties
1.89 Million homes Destroyed
HugeDamagesof Water Courses,Tubewells
Damagethe cropsof Approximately
1.32 Million Hectares
17. RISINGTEMPERATUREOFOCEANS
AND SEA
Rising temperature of ocean and sea may be more significant
thanthe direct effect of higher temperature.
Because….
• Theworld's agricultural output isheavily dependent on
irrigation.
• Out of a global cropped area of 1500 million ha, 16% is
irrigated.
• Global warming islikely to have a major impact onthe
hydrological cycleand consequently onirrigated agriculture.
18. RISINGTEMPERATUREOFOCEANS
AND SEA
Aswe have discussedthat atmospherictemp raisesdue to
green houseeffects soit raisesthe temp of sea/ocean onthe
following two mechanism
Two major mechanisms are causing sea level to rise.
First,shrinking land ice,suchasmountainglaciers and polar
ice sheets, isreleasing water into the oceans.
Second,asoceantemperatures rise,the warmer water
expands.Trapped within a basin bounded by the continents,
the water hasnowhere to go but up.:
21. Tornadoes:
• Atornado israpidly spinningair that develops from a
thunderstormsand isontheground.
• Theingredientsfor a tornado are a thunderstorm,winds
changing speedswith height and rapidly rising air.
Hurricanes:
• A hurricane is a huge organized
thunderstorm complex that develops over the ocean
• The ingredients are warm ocean water, weak upper
level winds,and low pressure

26. MELTINGOFGLACIERS
Over a Thousandyears ago,Asiansusedto irrigate
their lands by the melted water from glaciers.
During Warm season,snowmeltsslowly,releasing a
steady flow of water.
Over the last few decades,Glaciers are melting at
a torrid pace asanadverse effect of Global
warming & climate change.
27. MELTINGOFGLACIERS
Effects of Glacier Melting:
Reducedwater for agriculturaluse
Shrinkageof river based irrigated land
Contamination of coastal groundwater supply
More floods & droughts
Mudslides,dam break etc.
28. MELTINGOFGLACIERS
Acc.to IPCCreports, Himalayan glaciers could melt
entirely by 2035.
Thismelting of glaciers couldsoondeprive the
major rivers of India, China& Pakistan.
Inthe Indus,Ganga, Yellow,and YangtzeRiver
basins,where irrigated agriculture dependsheavily
onrivers,the glacier meltwill shrinkharvestsand
could create unmanageable food shortages.
29. MELTINGOFGLACIERS
TheYangtzeRiverin China,isthreatened by the
disappearance of glaciers whichwill effect 369m
people whorely heavily onrice from fields irrigated
with its water.
Inthe Ganga river alone, the lossof glacier melt water
would reduce river flows by two third, causingwater
shortage for 500m people and 37 per centof India’s
irrigated land.
Similarly, 60% of Pakistan’speople, depend ongrain
irrigated by the Indusriver, whichisalso dependent on
meltwater from Himalayan glaciers, are underthreat of
food & water scarcity.
