Mumbai: India is emerging as one of the preferred destination for
International garment companies to shift their base from China.
The international garment firms are now placing large order for the
products, that were till last year supplied by Chinese vendors, to their Indian

USA: USA has fallen by 30.68 per
cent in its apparel imports during January-
July ’20 period.
The USAimported US $ 33.87 billion
worth of garments in YTD till July ’20,
which is US $ 14.90 billion less than what
is imported in the same period of 2019.
However, the import of apparels of
USA has sharply increased by 51.13 per
cent in July ’20 over June ’20.
This is the highest monthly surge of
USA in 2020, which can be attributed to
the retail market recovery in the country.
USA imported US $ 6 billion worth of
garments in July ’20 as against US $ 3.97
billion in June ’20.
Despite surge in July ’20, the import
level is still far away from being normal if
compared by July ’19.
The RMG import of the country was
down by 32 per cent in July ’20 on Y-o-Y
basis.

Mumbai: COTTON USA has
launched the US Cotton Trust Protocol
held Intertextile Shanghai Home Textile
show in China.
The Trust Protocol brings quantifiable
and verifiable goals and measurement
to sustainable cotton production and
drives continuous improvement in key
sustainability metrics. COTTON USA
promotes US cotton fibre around the globe.
According to the Cotton Council
International (CCI), at the COTTON
USA booth, visitors browsed high-
quality products made by COTTON USA
home textile licensees including Byford,
Cerulean, Dalian Ichihiro, Dinosaur,
Huafang, Nantong Tang, Show Win, Sidefu
and Value Source.
A wide array of information
highlighting Cotton USA’s licensing
programme, market, and consumer studies
and its ongoing sourcing programs that
match US cotton buyers and suppliers
throughout the supply chain was also
available for guests to peruse.
Brands and retailers can now join the
US Cotton Trust Protocol, a new system for
responsibly grown cotton providing annual
data for six areas of sustainability in line
with the UN sustainability goals.
This year-over-year data, available
for the first time, will allow brands and
retailers to better measure progress towards
meeting their corporate sustainability
commitments.

Coimbatore: The State Government’s
free mask distribution scheme is yet to be
launched in the district as a whopping
number of masks it received from the
contractor, who won the tender, was of
substandard quality.
The district has rejected 5.85 lakh
masks that were supplied by the contractor
so far. The Government plan is to distribute
the free masks through ration shops to the
card holders. Once the masks are sent to
the handloom department, one sample per
5,000 masks would be selected on random
basis and sent to a private textile laboratory
for quality check. Among other factors, the
size of masks and length of tapes would
also be looked into.
As per the Government guidelines,
the masks should be made of 100% cotton
Free mask distribution scheme yet to be launch
fabric and the count of both the weft and
warp yarn should be 2/40.
Once the testing is completed,
they would send back the samples along
with the test results to the handloom
department, which would then take the
final call on whether to approve or reject
the product.
Punjab: The agriculture department
has found larvae of pink bollworm in the
empty bolls discarded and buried in the
ground by a cotton ginning factory.
The department officials during a
visit collected the larvae and provided
insecticides to farmers to stop further
spread of pink bollworm infestation on
cotton crop at Jodhpur Romana village in
Bathinda.
The department has recommended
action against the factory owners for the
infestation of pink bollworm from the larvae
left in the bolls. The agriculture department
will write to secretary mandi board for
action. The team also visited some other
cotton factories but did not find any trace
of larvae.

Pakistan: According to the Pakistan
Cotton GinnersAssociation, Sindh farmers
have lost nearly half-a-million bales of
cotton ever since the monsoon season
began and pest attacks intensified following
the humid weather. Growers in Mirpurkhas,
Sanghar, Umerkot, Khipro etc have lost
nearly 400,000-500,000 bales of cotton in
the ongoing month, and whatever crop has
survived the downpour is of low quality and
will sell at below market rates.
Cotton crop is the backbone of the
country’s rural economy and provides
direct and indirect job opportunities to
millions of labourers — especially women
who are engaged in cotton picking on fields.
Pakistan’s cotton production has fallen
from 14 million bales in 2014-15 to 9.17m
bales in 2019-20 due to unfavourable
weather, low water availability and pest
attacks. Also many farmers are switching
to other cash crops like sugarcane, rice etc.

Mumbai: Trade friction between the
U.S. and China could help countries like
Sri Lanka improve exports.
Sri Lankan’s textile and clothing
exports are likely to decline in the near
term, especially to key European and US
export destinations.
In the first six months of this year, Sri
Lankan exports of apparel declined from
$2.6 billion a year ago by 30 per cent to
$1.8 billion.
In the first six months of this year,
clothing exports to the European Union
declined 32% to $753 million from $1.1
billion a year earlier, while exports to the
US declined 27% to $830.5 million from
$1.14 billion in the same period.
But with the world pandemic
COVID-19, many businesses are now
afraid of depending on their supply chain
destinations. These markets now switch
from China to partners with other South
Asian countries.
Sri Lankan clothing producers can
easily tap into these countries. Apparel
Export Association’s statistics indicate
that clothing exports reached 382 million
USD in June of this year, down by 20.5%
on 481 million USD reported in last year’s
corresponding month.

Chennai: Manufacturers of N95
masks in the country have urged the Centre
to remove all export restrictions imposed
on the product since they are losing export
orders worth crores or rupees and have
been unable to cash in on a massive
business opportunity in the overseas
markets. Currently, the Centre has a fixed
a monthly export limit of 1 crore N95 masks,
but the Apparel Export Promotion Council
(AEPC) claims that N95 manufacturers are
facing difficulties due to oversupply.
Apparel Export Promotion Council
(AEPC) said on an average, over 50 lakh
N95 masks are being manufactured daily
Manufacturers seek permit to begin Exports
in India.
The textile hub in Tamil Nadu, Tirupur
alone can manufacture over 3 Crore pieces
of N95 masks monthly besides regular
cotton/2/3 ply masks.
On seeing the abundant supply
from Tirupur and all over India, we urged
the union commerce ministry to allow free
export of N95 masks like other masks and
PPE kits.
The AEPC has also requested
Finance Minister to extend the moratorium
on term loans up to March 31, 2021,
considering the slowdown in business and
the drastic fall in apparel exports.
Mumbai: Join AATCC and Duke University researcher,
Dr. David Grass, Ph.D., on September 24 at 11:00AM (EDT)
for a live presentation + Q&A to learn more about a recent
study exploring a variety of facemask styles and their efficacy
in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and similarly transmitted
viruses. Mandates for mask use in public during the recent
AATCC’s PPE Digital Series to Continue
COVID-19 pandemic, worsened by global shortage of commercial supplies, have led to
widespread use of homemade masks and mask alternatives. It is assumed that wearing
such masks reduces the likelihood for an infected person to spread the disease, but
many of these mask designs have not been tested in practice.
The research team has demonstrated a simple optical measurement method to
evaluate the efficacy of masks to reduce the transmission of respiratory droplets during
regular speech. In proof-of-principle studies, they compared a variety of commonly
available mask types and observed that some mask types approach the performance
of standard surgical masks, while some mask alternatives, such as neck fleece or
bandanas, offer very little protection.

Mumbai:Fit:Matchthe3D-AIpowered
apparel shopping match platform, has
rolled out the latest Fit:Match contactless
shopping experience at Oakbrook Center,
Brookfield Properties’ open-air shopping
centre in suburban Chicago, USA. The
shoppers can visit the Fit:Match Studio
to ‘get fitched’ or 3D measured in less
than 2 minutes and start shopping
immediately from the available 50 brands.
The technology delivers personalised
assortment of apparel matches from
the available brands. To get the process
started, the shoppers at Oakbrook Centre
will have to answer a few questions about
themselves and their preferences on the
mobile phone in order to get fitched and
receive a Fitch ID.
Following this, they enter the
Fit:Match Studio to get themselves
measured using the company’s touch free
3D technology that captures 150 body data
in about 10 seconds.
Based on the received data, the
platform then offers the customers with
curated assortment of clothing choices that
have 90 per cent chance or better likelihood
of fitting their exact body.
For delivering the results, the
algorithm of the platform determines the
relevance of products based in the person’s
Fitch ID and brand’s tech pack, fabric type
and stretch, and other key inputs. It keeps

partners and reduces the return cost
associated with the product. The company
is further planning to expand the service of
the studio experience to Glendale Galleria
in the LA area and to Stonebriar Centre in
the Dallas area this fall.
Mumbai: Ralph Lauren is still trying
to get back its digital business on track. In
fact, its Q1 digital sales in North America
grew just by 3 per cent even in these
tough times. As a part of its efforts to bring
back its e-commerce business on track,
the retailer is now working on defining a
customer base that’s more high-end than
the existing one.
The fashion label is creating ‘smart
customer profiles’ in some regions that
will enable it better target advertisements
and avoid sending promotions to those
consumers who are willing to purchase
products at full price. However, the
retailer is unsure how many high-end
consumers will rush to purchase high-
end products. Ralph Lauren is still keen
to hit this segment as it believes to be
more accommodating of its recent hike in
price, reduced promotions and selection
of higher-end items. Ralph Lauren, which
produces products ranging from mid-size
to luxury segments, generates revenue of
US $ 6.182 billion.

Mr. Seshadri Ramkumar,
Professor,
Texas Tech University, USA
USA: The Cotton supply chain
is a vital job-creating sector, from
agriculture to fashion industry.
With the COVID-19 creating
a dent in the economy with about
30 million people on unemployment
benefits in the United States, how
to grow the economy is a serious
challenge.
Growing the manufacturing
sector such as the textiles should be
seriously looked into.
Textile industry should develop
near to long-term strategies to
diversify and grow.
In India, over 45 million people
are employed directly in the textile
sector that contributes about 2% to
the GDP, highlighting the importance
of this sector in employment and
economy.
More importantly, cotton sector
cuts across two major areas of
the economy: 1) agriculture and 2)
manufacturing.
A discussion with preeminent
people whose experience spans the
fields of cotton economics, genetics,
cotton spinning and communication
provided valuable information.
I n n o v a t i o n s u r f a c e d
prominently, highlighting the need
for both basic and applied research
in the textile and allied sectors.
“ M a n a g i n g t h e c o s t o f
production and developing innovative
uses are vital,” stated Kater Hake,
vice president of agriculture &
environmental research at USA-
based Cotton Incorporated.
COVID-19 has brought much
attention to advanced textiles
products, particularly PPE.
Research reports shine light
on the value of cellulosic materials
towards virus destabilization,
breathability and comfort.
“These positive aspects should
spill over to traditional markets where
the bale volume is higher,” pointed
Jon Devine, an economist at Cotton
Incorporated.
Although masks may not
move the bar much with regard
to consumption, new applications
particularly in the medical field brings
due attention to the fibers, which
will influence the consumption and
support for natural fibers.
“Non-traditional products
may not consume large quantity of
Growing the Cotton Sector
cotton but they allow cotton to reach
new and untapped markets,” agreed
Eric Hequet, a cotton geneticist and
associate vice president for research
at Texas Tech University.
While mission linked research,
lower cost of production are valuable
tools, proper messaging about the
advantages of cotton plays a critical
role.
Cotton is not a medicine, but
it is an important fiber that goes into
inner wears. Improving the production
efficiencies by carefully planning cotton
procurement, reducing wastes, the
overall cost could be controlled.
This is important to compete
against low cost synthetics.
“Given the current situation with
damped consumer confidence, getting
a breakeven is a positive aspect for
a spinning mill,” stated Shanmugam
Velmurugan, general manager of South
India-based Jayalakshmi Textiles,
which produces fine count cotton yarns.
“With proper government
intervention that takes care of the
interests of farmers and manufacturers,
the industry can look forward to
diversifications,” stated Velmurugan.
Cotton sector has positive
messages that have to be relayed to
the stakeholders, say biodegradability,
microplastic issues, etc.
“Microplastic issue is a once in
a hundred years opportunity for the
sector,” stated Kater Hake.
Again, the pandemic has brought
timely and genuine interest in natural
fibers.
“Pandemic has reminded
everyone that we live in a giant
ecosystem, which is connected and
we need to pay more attention to the
planet,” stated Jon Devine.
Such renewed enthusiasm
will help with the consumption of
environmentally friendly products.
“Communication is essential for
everything else to succeed,” pointed out
David Perlmutter, dean of Texas Tech’s
College of Media & Communication.
“We should not be shy about
advertising the advantages of natural
fibers,” added Eric Hequet.
Seizing the opportunity at hand,
supporting innovative ecosystem,
looking towards cost savings and more
importantly timely messaging are the
tools in the toolbox for the cotton sector.
Cotton industry should innovate,
look for new markets and enhance
the use-value of fibers say industrial
applications.

Mumbai: The Q2 is expectedly
disheartening for the US-based fashion
retailer J. Jill! The fashion label announced
that its Q2 net sales dipped by a worrying
49 per cent to touch US $ 92.6 million from
US $ 180.7 million the previous year.
The direct to consumer sales
represented 71.6 per cent of total net sales,
in comparison to 42.6 per cent in the Q2 of
fiscal 2019. There was a fall in gross profit
too! While it was US $ 105.3 million a year
back during the same period, it dropped
to US $ 55 million this quarter that ended
1 August. The gross margin was 59.4 per
cent compared to 58.3 per cent in the Q2
of last year, distinctly reflecting the impact
of measures taken by the retailer in 2019 to
clear excess inventory. Inventory at the end
of Q2 this year is down to US $ 64.2 million,
while it was US $ 70 million a year back.
The net loss was US $ 18.5 million
compared to a loss of US $ 96.7 million in
the Q2 of the previous year.

Associations & Company Affairs
Mumbai: Japan imported 210,000
tons of textile and apparel in July, down
by 12% year-on-year but up by 18.2%
month-on-month; the volume from China
was 116,000 tons, down by 4.6% year-on-
year but up by 21.9% month-on-month.
During January to July, Japan's
cumulative textile and apparel imports
reached 1,427,000 tons, down by 6%
year-on-year, and that from China was
748,000 tons, down by 2.5% year-on-year.
In terms of value, the import value of
Japan‘s textile and apparel in July reached
307.59 billion yen, down by 14.9% year-
on-year but up by 21.6% month-on-month;
while that from China reached 173.89
billion yen, up by 18.3% month-on-month
but down by 9.1% year-on-year.
Japan's Textile & Apparel Imports in July 2020
During January to July, Japan's
cumulative textile and apparel imports
reached 2210.43 billion yen, down by
1.4% year-on-year, and that from China
was 1271.37 billion yen, up by 3.8 %
year-on-year.
From the perspective of the
proportion of import volume and value of
Japan's textile and apparel imported from
China in total imports, volume inched up
by 1.7% and value decreased by 1.6% in
July compared with that in June.
The value reached 56.5% and
the volume accounted for 55%. During
January to Juyl, proportion of import
volume and value of Japan's cumulative
textile and apparel imports reached 52.4%
and 57.5% respectively.
Japan's apparel import volume saw
the bigger decline than that of textile and
apparel
From Japan's apparel imports, the
imports volume of Japan's apparel in July
was 74,000tons, down 17.8% year-on-
year but up by 43% month-on-month; that
from China was 45,000tons, down 17.7%
year-on-year but up by 45% month-on-
month.
During January to July, the imports
volume of apparel was 479,000tons,
down 12.9% year-on-year, and that from
China was 283,000 tons, down by 14.5%
year-on-year.
In terms of value, the import value
of Japan's apparel in July reached 212.53
billion yen, down by 22.2% year-on-year
but up by 41.1% month-on-month; while
that from China reached 113.61 billion
yen, down by 22.6% year-on-year but up
by 43.2% month-on-month.
During January to July, the imports
value of apparel was 1401.61 billion yen,
down 15.6% year-on-year, and that from
China was 763.14 billion yen, down by
17.8% year-on-year.
In July, Japan's apparel imports
volume and value accounted for 35.1%
and 69.1% of the total textile and apparel
imports, and that from China accounted for
38.7% and 65.3% respectively. Compared
with last month, the proportion of both the
total apparel import and that of textile and
apparel from China increased.
Japan's apparel imports value
proportion was much more than the
volume, which showed that the unit price
played an important role.
Proportion of apparel decreased,
indicating that the proportion of textiles
increased and the impact of textile import
demand was less than that of apparel.
In July, the import volume and
value of HS code 6307900 increased
apparently, but the growth rate slowed
down compared with that in the past
months. The total import volume and that
from China moved up by 9.5% and 11.5%
respectively; while the value moved down
by 21.3% and 23% respectively.

Mumbai: Uster has launched a USTER Jossi Vision Shield N fibre cleaning system
offering complete control over contamination and defect. The technology combines two
automated solutions for quality monitoring which is specially developed for high-output
synthetic nonwoven industry. The material has high throughput, with wear and tear on
machine through abrasive fibres adding extra constraints. Therefore, the production
lines demand tough standards for which the company has rolled out Jossi Vision Shield
N fibre cleaning system that meets the exact requirements of a woven material and is
designed to be installed on high-production lines. The machine offers the best possible
initial inspection and removal of contamination at the fibre inspection stage and at the
end of the production sequence it automates detection and marketing of all the major
defects caused during production and of any remaining contamination. The construction
of the machine is done with durable material that uses stainless steel to avoid abrasion
when the fibre comes in contact with the machine. The fibre cleaner’s slim design fits
perfectly into the existing lines and delivers the accurate detection result about the
disturbing contamination types in nonwovens, including coloured fibres, metal or wood
particles and grease deposits. The machine has been manufactured in close collaboration
with the international non-woven companies and includes countless hours of field tests.
Though the machine is brand new, it integrates the well-proven technology which
was introduced in the market 20 years ago. More than 3,500 systems are currently
installed worldwide and the technology has been continuously improved.
The machine features Quick Tech which offers extra assurance in which the
machine automatically learns to correct colours of each new raw material lot within
seconds while avoiding any false ejections when changing lots. Also, every ejected
contaminant can be viewed on the touchscreen to verify that only the required material
is removed.

Mumbai: SDL Atlas has launched
the Impact Penetration Tester, precisely
designed to satisfy AATCC Test Method
42: Water Resistance: Impact Penetration.
The development was originally
made to predict the rain penetration,
AATCC TM 42. The technology will now
be used in medical industry to measure
the liquid barrier performance for personal
protective equipment (PPE). It is made
using a sturdy frame, high stainless steel
that allows for precise and repeatable test
results. An air bubble on the base shows
when the instrument is properly levelled.
The novelty is now available globally.
The company also provides a specialised
6” x 9” Blotting Paper the test requires.

  • 2. 02 www.gtanews.in Global Textiles & Apparels, Mumbai, Monday, 07 September 2020 Associations & Company Affairs Rajashtan: Rajasthan would soon host several development projects in textile, defence and aviation sectors. The Rajasthan Government has entered into an understanding with SVP International Group for investment of Rs. 4,000 crore for development of facilities related to these sectors. In presence of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, an MoU was signed. As per the agreement, SVP Group would develop a project for defence and aerospace including aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, an aviation academy and another project related to textile. These projects would generate employment for more than 4000 people. Prior to this, representatives gave a presentation and shared the details of projects proposed by the company. The State Government has constituted a committee chaired by Principal Secretary Industries. Commissioner, Investment and NRIs will be the Member Secretary, Managing Director RIICO, concerned District Collectors, Director Civil Aviation and representatives of SVP group will also be the members of this committee. Rajasthan Govt. signs MoU with SVP Group USA: USA has fallen by 30.68 per cent in its apparel imports during January- July ’20 period. The USAimported US $ 33.87 billion worth of garments in YTD till July ’20, which is US $ 14.90 billion less than what is imported in the same period of 2019. However, the import of apparels of USA has sharply increased by 51.13 per cent in July ’20 over June ’20. This is the highest monthly surge of USA in 2020, which can be attributed to the retail market recovery in the country. USA imported US $ 6 billion worth of garments in July ’20 as against US $ 3.97 billion in June ’20. Despite surge in July ’20, the import level is still far away from being normal if compared by July ’19. The RMG import of the country was down by 32 per cent in July ’20 on Y-o-Y basis. US RMG Imports Mumbai: COTTON USA has launched the US Cotton Trust Protocol held Intertextile Shanghai Home Textile show in China. The Trust Protocol brings quantifiable and verifiable goals and measurement to sustainable cotton production and drives continuous improvement in key sustainability metrics. COTTON USA promotes US cotton fibre around the globe. According to the Cotton Council International (CCI), at the COTTON USA booth, visitors browsed high- quality products made by COTTON USA home textile licensees including Byford, Cerulean, Dalian Ichihiro, Dinosaur, Huafang, Nantong Tang, Show Win, Sidefu and Value Source. A wide array of information highlighting Cotton USA’s licensing programme, market, and consumer studies and its ongoing sourcing programs that match US cotton buyers and suppliers throughout the supply chain was also available for guests to peruse. Brands and retailers can now join the US Cotton Trust Protocol, a new system for responsibly grown cotton providing annual data for six areas of sustainability in line with the UN sustainability goals. This year-over-year data, available for the first time, will allow brands and retailers to better measure progress towards meeting their corporate sustainability commitments. US Cotton Trust Protocol held in China Coimbatore: The State Government’s free mask distribution scheme is yet to be launched in the district as a whopping number of masks it received from the contractor, who won the tender, was of substandard quality. The district has rejected 5.85 lakh masks that were supplied by the contractor so far. The Government plan is to distribute the free masks through ration shops to the card holders. Once the masks are sent to the handloom department, one sample per 5,000 masks would be selected on random basis and sent to a private textile laboratory for quality check. Among other factors, the size of masks and length of tapes would also be looked into. As per the Government guidelines, the masks should be made of 100% cotton Free mask distribution scheme yet to be launch fabric and the count of both the weft and warp yarn should be 2/40. Once the testing is completed, they would send back the samples along with the test results to the handloom department, which would then take the final call on whether to approve or reject the product. Punjab: The agriculture department has found larvae of pink bollworm in the empty bolls discarded and buried in the ground by a cotton ginning factory. The department officials during a visit collected the larvae and provided insecticides to farmers to stop further spread of pink bollworm infestation on cotton crop at Jodhpur Romana village in Bathinda. The department has recommended action against the factory owners for the infestation of pink bollworm from the larvae left in the bolls. The agriculture department will write to secretary mandi board for action. The team also visited some other cotton factories but did not find any trace of larvae. Pink bollworm attack in Punjab Pakistan: According to the Pakistan Cotton GinnersAssociation, Sindh farmers have lost nearly half-a-million bales of cotton ever since the monsoon season began and pest attacks intensified following the humid weather. Growers in Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Umerkot, Khipro etc have lost nearly 400,000-500,000 bales of cotton in the ongoing month, and whatever crop has survived the downpour is of low quality and will sell at below market rates. Cotton crop is the backbone of the country’s rural economy and provides direct and indirect job opportunities to millions of labourers — especially women who are engaged in cotton picking on fields. Pakistan’s cotton production has fallen from 14 million bales in 2014-15 to 9.17m bales in 2019-20 due to unfavourable weather, low water availability and pest attacks. Also many farmers are switching to other cash crops like sugarcane, rice etc. Pakistan loses 0.5 Cotton bales Mumbai: Trade friction between the U.S. and China could help countries like Sri Lanka improve exports. Sri Lankan’s textile and clothing exports are likely to decline in the near term, especially to key European and US export destinations. In the first six months of this year, Sri Lankan exports of apparel declined from $2.6 billion a year ago by 30 per cent to $1.8 billion. In the first six months of this year, clothing exports to the European Union declined 32% to $753 million from $1.1 billion a year earlier, while exports to the US declined 27% to $830.5 million from $1.14 billion in the same period. But with the world pandemic COVID-19, many businesses are now afraid of depending on their supply chain destinations. These markets now switch from China to partners with other South Asian countries. Sri Lankan clothing producers can easily tap into these countries. Apparel Export Association’s statistics indicate that clothing exports reached 382 million USD in June of this year, down by 20.5% on 481 million USD reported in last year’s corresponding month. Sri Lanka to expand Exports

Currently, the Centre has a fixed a monthly export limit of 1 crore N95 masks, but the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) claims that N95 manufacturers are facing difficulties due to oversupply. Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said on an average, over 50 lakh N95 masks are being manufactured daily Manufacturers seek permit to begin Exports in India. The textile hub in Tamil Nadu, Tirupur alone can manufacture over 3 Crore pieces of N95 masks monthly besides regular cotton/2/3 ply masks. On seeing the abundant supply from Tirupur and all over India, we urged the union commerce ministry to allow free export of N95 masks like other masks and PPE kits. The AEPC has also requested Finance Minister to extend the moratorium on term loans up to March 31, 2021, considering the slowdown in business and the drastic fall in apparel exports. Mumbai: Join AATCC and Duke University researcher, Dr. David Grass, Ph.D., on September 24 at 11:00AM (EDT) for a live presentation + Q&A to learn more about a recent study exploring a variety of facemask styles and their efficacy in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and similarly transmitted viruses. Mandates for mask use in public during the recent AATCC’s PPE Digital Series to Continue COVID-19 pandemic, worsened by global shortage of commercial supplies, have led to widespread use of homemade masks and mask alternatives. It is assumed that wearing such masks reduces the likelihood for an infected person to spread the disease, but many of these mask designs have not been tested in practice. The research team has demonstrated a simple optical measurement method to evaluate the efficacy of masks to reduce the transmission of respiratory droplets during regular speech. In proof-of-principle studies, they compared a variety of commonly available mask types and observed that some mask types approach the performance of standard surgical masks, while some mask alternatives, such as neck fleece or bandanas, offer very little protection. T h e m e a s u r e m e n t s e t u p is inexpensive and can be built and operated by non-experts, allowing for rapid evaluation of mask performance during speech, sneezing, or coughing. Dr. Grass is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Professor Warren Warren at Duke University, working on early detection of metastatic melanoma (skin cancer) with ultrafast spectroscopy and microscopy. He is a recipient of the Walter Benjamin Fellowship. Mumbai: Diesel has introduced a new collaboration with GR8. The partnership will link Diesel with eight of the most forward-thinking Japanese and international designers and artists in unique and limited-edition capsule collections, representing the creative force and idea from each one of them, in powerful graphics and prints applied into Diesel apparel. The overall capsules are based on Diesel denim, jackets, sweats, and t-shirts. All are approached from a unisex perspective. Each of the eight designers andartistshavegiventhesepiecestheirown unique expression. Their artistic mediums range widely including photography, illustration, calligraphy and typography. A total of 36 items will be available. The visual catchiness ultimately recalls Kubo’s original idea of a “playground” executed in an impactful pop-up concept design. These eight special capsules were created as a trifecta collaboration between Diesel, GR8 and each respective creative party. Diesel partners with GR8 Mumbai:Fit:Matchthe3D-AIpowered apparel shopping match platform, has rolled out the latest Fit:Match contactless shopping experience at Oakbrook Center, Brookfield Properties’ open-air shopping centre in suburban Chicago, USA. The shoppers can visit the Fit:Match Studio to ‘get fitched’ or 3D measured in less than 2 minutes and start shopping immediately from the available 50 brands. The technology delivers personalised assortment of apparel matches from the available brands. To get the process started, the shoppers at Oakbrook Centre will have to answer a few questions about themselves and their preferences on the mobile phone in order to get fitched and receive a Fitch ID. Following this, they enter the Fit:Match Studio to get themselves measured using the company’s touch free 3D technology that captures 150 body data in about 10 seconds. Based on the received data, the platform then offers the customers with curated assortment of clothing choices that have 90 per cent chance or better likelihood of fitting their exact body. For delivering the results, the algorithm of the platform determines the relevance of products based in the person’s Fitch ID and brand’s tech pack, fabric type and stretch, and other key inputs. It keeps Fit:Match launch complete contactless shopping experience on learning through the customers fit and style preferences over the time to increase the relevance and accuracy. The accuracy in the recommendation improves the brands’ conversion and loyalty and boosts margins for its brands partners and reduces the return cost associated with the product. The company is further planning to expand the service of the studio experience to Glendale Galleria in the LA area and to Stonebriar Centre in the Dallas area this fall. Mumbai: Ralph Lauren is still trying to get back its digital business on track. In fact, its Q1 digital sales in North America grew just by 3 per cent even in these tough times. As a part of its efforts to bring back its e-commerce business on track, the retailer is now working on defining a customer base that’s more high-end than the existing one. The fashion label is creating ‘smart customer profiles’ in some regions that will enable it better target advertisements and avoid sending promotions to those consumers who are willing to purchase products at full price. However, the retailer is unsure how many high-end consumers will rush to purchase high- end products. Ralph Lauren is still keen to hit this segment as it believes to be more accommodating of its recent hike in price, reduced promotions and selection of higher-end items. Ralph Lauren, which produces products ranging from mid-size to luxury segments, generates revenue of US $ 6.182 billion. Ralph Lauren to reduce wholesale distribution Mumbai: Cos, H&M-owned brand based in London, has rolled-out a new platform for second-hand apparels. E-mail: rahulvsood@gmail.com, rahul@gtanews.in 05 www.gtanews.in Global Textiles & Apparels, Mumbai, Monday, 07 September 2020 Associations & Company Affairs Mr. Seshadri Ramkumar, Professor, Texas Tech University, USA USA: The Cotton supply chain is a vital job-creating sector, from agriculture to fashion industry. With the COVID-19 creating a dent in the economy with about 30 million people on unemployment benefits in the United States, how to grow the economy is a serious challenge. Growing the manufacturing sector such as the textiles should be seriously looked into. Textile industry should develop near to long-term strategies to diversify and grow. In India, over 45 million people are employed directly in the textile sector that contributes about 2% to the GDP, highlighting the importance of this sector in employment and economy. More importantly, cotton sector cuts across two major areas of the economy: 1) agriculture and 2) manufacturing. A discussion with preeminent people whose experience spans the fields of cotton economics, genetics, cotton spinning and communication provided valuable information. I n n o v a t i o n s u r f a c e d prominently, highlighting the need for both basic and applied research in the textile and allied sectors. “ M a n a g i n g t h e c o s t o f production and developing innovative uses are vital,” stated Kater Hake, vice president of agriculture & environmental research at USA- based Cotton Incorporated. COVID-19 has brought much attention to advanced textiles products, particularly PPE. Research reports shine light on the value of cellulosic materials towards virus destabilization, breathability and comfort. “These positive aspects should spill over to traditional markets where the bale volume is higher,” pointed Jon Devine, an economist at Cotton Incorporated. Although masks may not move the bar much with regard to consumption, new applications particularly in the medical field brings due attention to the fibers, which will influence the consumption and support for natural fibers. “Non-traditional products may not consume large quantity of Growing the Cotton Sector cotton but they allow cotton to reach new and untapped markets,” agreed Eric Hequet, a cotton geneticist and associate vice president for research at Texas Tech University. While mission linked research, lower cost of production are valuable tools, proper messaging about the advantages of cotton plays a critical role. Cotton is not a medicine, but it is an important fiber that goes into inner wears. Improving the production efficiencies by carefully planning cotton procurement, reducing wastes, the overall cost could be controlled. This is important to compete against low cost synthetics. “Given the current situation with damped consumer confidence, getting a breakeven is a positive aspect for a spinning mill,” stated Shanmugam Velmurugan, general manager of South India-based Jayalakshmi Textiles, which produces fine count cotton yarns. “With proper government intervention that takes care of the interests of farmers and manufacturers, the industry can look forward to diversifications,” stated Velmurugan. Cotton sector has positive messages that have to be relayed to the stakeholders, say biodegradability, microplastic issues, etc. “Microplastic issue is a once in a hundred years opportunity for the sector,” stated Kater Hake. Again, the pandemic has brought timely and genuine interest in natural fibers. “Pandemic has reminded everyone that we live in a giant ecosystem, which is connected and we need to pay more attention to the planet,” stated Jon Devine. Such renewed enthusiasm will help with the consumption of environmentally friendly products. “Communication is essential for everything else to succeed,” pointed out David Perlmutter, dean of Texas Tech’s College of Media & Communication. “We should not be shy about advertising the advantages of natural fibers,” added Eric Hequet. Seizing the opportunity at hand, supporting innovative ecosystem, looking towards cost savings and more importantly timely messaging are the tools in the toolbox for the cotton sector. Cotton industry should innovate, look for new markets and enhance the use-value of fibers say industrial applications. John Lewis adds 30 New Brands Mumbai: Uster has launched a USTER Jossi Vision Shield N fibre cleaning system offering complete control over contamination and defect. The technology combines two automated solutions for quality monitoring which is specially developed for high-output synthetic nonwoven industry. The material has high throughput, with wear and tear on machine through abrasive fibres adding extra constraints. Therefore, the production lines demand tough standards for which the company has rolled out Jossi Vision Shield N fibre cleaning system that meets the exact requirements of a woven material and is designed to be installed on high-production lines. The machine offers the best possible initial inspection and removal of contamination at the fibre inspection stage and at the end of the production sequence it automates detection and marketing of all the major defects caused during production and of any remaining contamination. The construction of the machine is done with durable material that uses stainless steel to avoid abrasion when the fibre comes in contact with the machine. The fibre cleaner’s slim design fits perfectly into the existing lines and delivers the accurate detection result about the disturbing contamination types in nonwovens, including coloured fibres, metal or wood particles and grease deposits. The machine has been manufactured in close collaboration with the international non-woven companies and includes countless hours of field tests. Though the machine is brand new, it integrates the well-proven technology which was introduced in the market 20 years ago. More than 3,500 systems are currently installed worldwide and the technology has been continuously improved. The machine features Quick Tech which offers extra assurance in which the machine automatically learns to correct colours of each new raw material lot within seconds while avoiding any false ejections when changing lots. Also, every ejected contaminant can be viewed on the touchscreen to verify that only the required material is removed. Uster launch automated quality monitoring for Nonwoven Producers Mumbai: SDL Atlas has launched the Impact Penetration Tester, precisely designed to satisfy AATCC Test Method 42: Water Resistance: Impact Penetration. The development was originally made to predict the rain penetration, AATCC TM 42. The technology will now be used in medical industry to measure the liquid barrier performance for personal protective equipment (PPE). It is made using a sturdy frame, high stainless steel that allows for precise and repeatable test results. An air bubble on the base shows when the instrument is properly levelled. The novelty is now available globally. The company also provides a specialised 6” x 9” Blotting Paper the test requires.
