In 1960, the world population reached 3 billion people. There was a large gap between developing and industrialized countries, with the poor lacking adequate food, education, health, and other resources. From 1960 to 2010, the world population increased by 4 billion, with around 2 billion people remaining in poverty. If trends continue, the world population is projected to reach 8 billion by 2050. Effective population control will require continuing efforts to improve child survival rates in developing nations.
