3. History of The Indian Army
◦ The Army of India was raised under the British Raj in the 19th century by taking the
erstwhile presidency armies, merging them, and bringing them under the Crown.
◦ The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated
in several battles and campaigns around the world, earning many battle and theatre
honor's before and after Independence.
◦ Indian Army was indulged in 5 wars –
1. Kashmir War of 1947- 48.
2. India China War of 1962.
3. India Pakistan War of 1965.
4. India Pakistan War of 1971.
5. Kargil War, 1999.
4. KARGIL WAR of 1999
◦ The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict [operation Vijay] , was an armed
conflict fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district
of Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LoC). The cause of
the war was the infiltration of Pakistani troops—disguised as Kashmiri militants—into
positions on the Indian side of the LoC.
◦ When a patrol party of 5 soldiers was sent to check the infiltration they were
subsequently killed. From 3 MAY to 6 JUNE many incidents like artillery shelling, dog fights,
air strikes, took place.
◦ And on 6 June The Indian Army begins a major offensive in Kargil. Many troops were
deployed in Kargil.,batalik,drass sectors of Jammu and Kashmir
◦ On 14 July Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee declares Operation Vijay a
success. The Indian government sets conditions for talks with Pakistan.
◦ On 26 July Kargil War officially comes to an end. Indian Army announces the complete
withdrawal of Pakistani irregular and regular forces.
6. Honourable Mention
◦ Manoj Kumar Pandey, PVC (25 June 1975 – 3 July 1999) was an officer of the Indian
Army who was posthumously awarded India's highest military honor, the Param Vir
Chakra, for his audacious courage and leadership during the Kargil War in 1999.
◦ On the night of 2/3 July 1999, he and his platoon approached its final objective, it
came under heavy and intense enemy fire. The officer was tasked to clear the
interfering enemy positions, so as to prevent his team being in a vulnerable position.
Fearlessly assaulting the first enemy position, he killed two enemy personnel and
proceeded to assault the second and destroyed it by killing two more enemy personnel
◦ Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey was injured on the shoulder and legs by enemy fire
while clearing the third position. Without caring for his injury he and his men and
destroyed the same with a grenade, even as he got a fatal Machine Gun burst on his
forehead. It is this singular daredevil act of the officer, which finally led to capture of
Jubar Top of the Khalubar Hills in Batalik Sector of Kargil.
