The poem expresses gratitude for blessings over troubles, finding more blessings the more they are counted. While some things were not as expected, goodness and blessings were thickly crowded in to offset hard times. There has always been sunshine after showers of tears and laughter scattered along the years. Thorns have sometimes pricked but love has often been hidden beneath beauty. The speaker will remain thankful for both good and bad times, which have made them happy and strengthened them through difficulties, and for little blessings like children, faithful friends, and God's guiding hand through dangers.
