Satellite technology can help bridge Africa's digital divide by providing connectivity to rural and remote areas not served by fiber networks. Africa's population is projected to grow significantly in coming decades, and satellite can connect the millions of Africans currently without internet access. Digital migration deadlines for switching to digital television also present an opportunity for satellite to deliver content cost-effectively across countries. Governments' initiatives to expand access can be supported through hosted payload solutions on satellites that provide services like broadband internet, television broadcasting, and enterprise communications across Africa.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Robin van Emden, Senior Director of Data Science at Network Optix, presents the “Building and Scaling AI Applications with the Nx AI Manager,” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
In this presentation, van Emden covers the basics of scaling edge AI solutions using the Nx tool kit. He emphasizes the process of developing AI models and deploying them globally. He also showcases the conversion of AI models and the creation of effective edge AI pipelines, with a focus on pre-processing, model conversion, selecting the appropriate inference engine for the target hardware and post-processing.
van Emden shows how Nx can simplify the developer’s life and facilitate a rapid transition from concept to production-ready applications. He provides valuable insights into developing scalable and efficient edge AI solutions, with a strong focus on practical implementation.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject.
We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup.
Further emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in developing XSLT, or schemas such as XSD and Schematron. We will address the techniques and strategies adopted to create prompts for generating code, explaining code, or refactoring the code, and the results achieved.
The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring.
The presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of AI usage in XML development, providing attendees with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions. Whether you’re at the early stages of adopting AI or considering integrating it in advanced XML development, this presentation will cover all levels of expertise.
By highlighting the potential advantages and challenges of integrating AI with XML development tools and languages, the presentation seeks to inspire thoughtful conversation around the future of XML development. We’ll not only delve into the technical aspects of AI-powered XML development but also discuss practical implications and possible future directions.
Threats to mobile devices are more prevalent and increasing in scope and complexity. Users of mobile devices desire to take full advantage of the features
available on those devices, but many of the features provide convenience and capability but sacrifice security. This best practices guide outlines steps the users can take to better protect personal devices and information.
2. What were the customers
needs?
Requirement for
complete wireless
coverage.
Provide Wi-Fi to over
25,000 visitors in one
day.
Provide Wi-Fi to over
500 Stall holders, bars,
cafés & VIP lounges.
Provide separate secure networks for
the organisers, press, stall holders &
general admission public.
Secure wireless internet
access for the public.
To gather analytical
data for future
events.
3. How did we satisfy those
needs?
Installed & bonded 3 temporary broadband lines through
our wholesale provider & own router configuration.
Use the 4G network and satellite system for redundancy.
Completed a full site survey for wireless coverage across
the entire 35 acre site.
Project co-ordinator worked with the organisers ensuring
planning was in place for pole positions, power.
Location planning of large agricultural vehicles that
would be in place for the show that potentially would
compromise the Wireless AP’s ability to broadcast.
4. Equipment we used
TTB ADSL connectivity
VPN Gateway
4G router for Redundancy
Wireless access points using mesh technology
Strategically trenched cable runs to minimise
any performance issue of overwhelmed AP’s.
60mbps/18mbps satellite broadband
7. The Results
Organisers able to update website and social
media throughout the day uninterrupted.
Local Press online and reporting back to HQ,
blogging and reporting on the days events.
Stall holders cloud based PoS units and EFT
working throughout the day enabling them to do
Business.
General Admission and ticket holders able to get
online in a streamlined, non intrusive fashion but
protecting the WISP (Show organisers) from any
illegal traffic putting them at risk.
8. Testimonial
We invited ONE UK to deliver a Wi-Fi solution to 23,000 visitors, over
500 trade stand holders and VIP lounges without risking the corporate
network. There engineers arrived on time and carried out surveys &
on the day before the event they arrived to install the equipment &
get the WiFi up & running.
On the day of the event we had no complaints, in-fact the majority
of the people were surprised that we had internet access in the
middle of a field!
The success of the show we feel fell on the success of the internet
access, to this we are eternally grateful to ONE UK for their advice
and support.
I have no hesitation in recommending ONE UK to other businesses.
