Gibraltar is a small British territory in southern Spain with a population of around 28,750. It has a Mediterranean climate and features include the Rock of Gibraltar and beaches. Gibraltar came under British control in 1704 and is now a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa that gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a long armed struggle. It has a population of around 5.2 million and a transitional government led by President Isaias Afewerki. The economy relies on agriculture and fishing and faces challenges from sanctions and border conflicts with Ethiopia.
Gibraltar has a long history, first being settled by Muslims in the 10th century and changing hands between powers until captured by Britain in the early 18th century. Today, Gibraltar has a population of over 30,000, composed of people of various ethnicities though most were born in Gibraltar. It has a local parliamentary government appointed by the UK and is part of the European Union. Gibraltar's economy relies heavily on maritime business, tourism, and services due to its small size, and it is notable for its population of Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey species found in Europe.

This document discusses Anguilla's relationship with the EU and proposals following Hurricane Irma:
- Anguilla is heavily dependent on neighboring French and Dutch islands for essential services but is cut off from these services each evening. The EU is Anguilla's main source of development aid.
- Hurricane Irma in 2017 was the worst hurricane on record for Anguilla, destroying over 90% of housing and nearly all critical infrastructure. The UK's aid package of £60 million has yet to be provided.
- The document proposes strengthening Anguilla's relationship with the EU to provide continued access to essential services and development aid, as well as modernizing Anguilla's constitution to better support its democratic
The Portuguese Empire originated from settlements along the Douro River in northern Portugal. Portugal developed naval technologies that enabled exploration and colonization beginning in the 15th century. At its peak, Portugal ruled territories in South America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. However, it gradually lost wealth and territories to other European powers. Portugal's last colony, Brazil, gained independence in 1822. Portugal focused on rebuilding after disasters like earthquakes and the Napoleonic Wars. It later joined NATO and the EU.
The document discusses the fishing sectors of several European countries including Spain, Greece, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Spain has a long coastline rich in fish resources and a long tradition of fishing. Greece is promoting fishing tourism to support fishermen's livelihoods and protect aquatic environments. France is a major producer of seafood in the EU, deriving most production from fish and mollusks. Italy's fishing production has declined in recent years while aquaculture has grown. The UK has the second largest fishing sector in the EU in terms of production volume and value.
This document summarizes a meeting of the advocacy group Wir Shetland, which aims to achieve greater autonomy for Shetland, possibly in the form of British Overseas Territory status. It discusses the group's structure and goals, as well as issues related to layers of government, funding disparities, economic contributions, fisheries and more. The document argues that greater self-governance could provide financial gains for Shetland and help address issues like depopulation through improved infrastructure and services.
The document provides an overview of the Spanish, French, and Dutch Caribbean territories. It discusses how Spain established hegemony over the Caribbean until the 17th century and implemented a mercantilist economic system based on factories and slave labor. Mercantilism established a closed trade system between Spain and its Caribbean colonies. The plantation economy model later arose, based on agricultural mass production using slave labor. The document also characterizes the French and Dutch Caribbean territories, which include overseas departments, unique territorial collectivities, and special municipalities that have varying degrees of autonomy from their European countries. It explores the ongoing debate around political status and dependence in the non-independent territories.

The Malta Ship Registry is the largest in Europe and seventh largest globally. Malta offers attractive benefits for ship registration like low costs, tax exemptions, and no restrictions on crew nationality. Ships must be certified by an approved classification society and older ships require additional inspections. The maritime administration handles registration, enforcement of safety and pollution laws, and accident investigations. Shipowners benefit from Malta's maritime history, incentives like reduced tonnage tax, and services, though ownership requirements and legal procedures present some drawbacks.

AUTONOMA - Dalia Munenzon - Continental Islands: Ceuta and Gibraltar A typolo...Autonoma Conference
Continental Islands (CIs) are a geomorphologic formation of land disconnected from the mainland while maintaining the same on continental shelf. This characteristic of connectivity and remoteness blurs the CIs relation to the geopolitical territory of the ‘mainland’. The geographical constraints & geopolitical ambiguity sets the CIs in an important infrastructural role in global political economy as spaces of exchange, trade and circulation. Consequently this multilayered aspect attracts competition over political and economic resources, which results in a social and urban spatial re-organization. The CIs discussed in this paper located on both banks of the Strait of Gibraltar in the Mediterranean. They are divided between Africa and Europe: Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city surrounded by Morocco; and Gibraltar, a British overseas territory surrounded by Spain. Thus both territories are separated from their hinterlands and mainland. This paper explores the CIs as a typology of operational, transactional and infrastructural spaces and develops a design strategy, which will lead to the fulfillment of the autonomic potential of these territories.
Historically, both Ceuta and Gibraltar maintain extensive military infrastructure across their territories and are both dependent on their respective mainlands. This fact is a clear sign of their strategic geopolitical importance - an imperialistic manifestation of power and control. As a result of this relationship civilian and social infrastructures are marginalized and neglected by the mainland policymakers. Following the reduction of the military involvement in Gibraltar, the territory accepted it’s partial emancipation and used the new status as a tool for attraction of undisclosed and lucrative economic activities. On the other hand Ceuta is currently fully supported by Spain and functions as a black commodity market, transport hub and geopolitical territorial currency, while sustaining 32% of unemployment and a large immigrant community. In this paper the CI strategy will be examined by applying a new contrarian scenario of extended emancipation, which will suggest a future where local sociopolitical movements will transform Ceuta and Gibraltar and will set them as important nodes in the global economic nexus.

According to the World Economic Forum, digital technologies can help reduce global carbon emissions by up to 15%. However, digitalization also comes with some challenges. Thus, if we want to make a positive impact by increasing sustainability, we need to address challenges like the digital divide, energy consumption of IT, or the rise of electronic waste. In this talk, I want to explore how Agile can help to leverage Digital Sustainability.

• Name comes from long ago when the Moors (Muslims
from North Africa) occupied half of Spain for nearly 800
years. (711 – 1462 AD)
• Jebel or Gibral in Arabic means hill or mountain
• Tarik ibn Ziyad was the Berber ruler of neighbouring
Tangier who occupied the Rock and kept it as an Arab
stronghold. Gibraltar is named after him.
Rock of Gibraltar and the surrounding area
one of the longest inhabited places in
Europe.
Evidence of Neanderthal habitation in
Gibraltar between 128,000 and 24,000 BC has
been discovered at Gorham's Cave, making
Gibraltar the last known holdout of the
Neanderthals.
Within recorded history, the first
inhabitants were the Phoenicians, around
950 BC. Subsequently, Gibraltar became
