CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

1. Introduction
Our app (Ghar Service) is a platform that allows skilled and experienced professionals to connect
with the users who is looking for the household services like plumbing, electrician and so on. This
application is primarily used by customers who require home services in its operational geography.
This application contains two login interfaces: Admin user interface and Customer user interface.
Admin user interface is accessible to the service provider and the customer user interface is accessible
for the customers where they need to register the phone number and set the current location for the
login process. Customers hire required professionals for their services according to the needs. This
application works as a mediator between the clients and the service provider.
2. Working Mechanisms
This application is designed as a need to bridge the gap between service providers and service
receivers. This application has two-folded function – one for the user and one for the professional.
2.1. Customer
Through the app, users can go through a list of services depending on their requirements and
choose the appropriate one.
Once the package is selected, the user chooses a date and time for the appointment.
This application allows the users to check the service provider and his qualities. The presence
can be guaranteed by visiting the profile of visitors.
The payments system can be done by advance payments or by cash.
The users can rate and review the services.
2.2. Service Provider
When a service is requested, the professionals in that area get a notification. They can either
accept or deny.
If the request is accepted, the user and provider both get notifications to confirm the booking.
If due to some emergency professionals back out, they are charged.
13. 8
3. Problems and Solutions of the App:
3.1. Problem Domain:
• Lack of trustworthy technicians:
Technical problems related to electricity, plumbing etc. are quite dangerous problems and needs to
be solved with great skills. And when people are not aware or don’t have enough knowledge about
the problem, there is more chance of getting cheated. Especially, when people are new and do not
have much information about the place.
• Lack of employment facilities:
There are lots of technicians or workers who are very skilled and talented, but they are not exposed
well to the market. So, they sit at home unemployed or roam around every day for jobs. Because of
this, they are compelled to do the works that they might not be good at or interested in, just to earn
their livings which is not a good use of human resources.
• Waste of time:
Problems related to plumbing, electricity or shifting things etc. most of times needs to be solved
quickly. For that, the technicians or the professionals are needed at that very time. Searching them
manually at that time can waste the customers time.
3.2. Solution:
• Less chance of getting cheated:
As we all know that, a person must go through certain tests and exams before a company hires them.
So, when customers book the technicians or professionals from our app, there is very less chance of
getting cheated by the fake ones. And even if that happens or if the customers are not satisfied with
the work of their technicians, there is still the company where people can go and complain. Also, can
get the refunds back. In this way our app helps a customer get a trustworthy technician.
14. 9
• Good use of human resources:
Our app is a mediator between the company and the customer. Our app makes the communication
between the company and the customer possible. So, now the companies will hire the technicians,
communicate with the customers and can send those technicians to their jobs. Due to this, those
unemployed people can get jobs and it is also a good use of human resources.
• Saving time:
With the help of our app, customers can login to our page and can book the respective technicians
according to the problem. The company will get the notification and will send the technician to the
respective home to solve the problem. This way, the customers can easily find the technicians without
wasting any time.
15. 10
4. Technical Skills and Resources:
For a development of a mobile application it requires specific hardware, software and technical
skills and human resources. A mobile app development cycle consists of four different stages
normally. They are:
a. The Discovery Phase
b. The Design Phase
c. The Development and Testing Phase
d. Maintenance and Update Phase
Every stage requires certain technicians, developers and other human manpower. The base foundation
to build a mobile application are specific hardware and software. Various manpower is required for
respective tasks like User Interface (UI) design, Database and hardware computing, Programming,
Interfaces (APIs) for various mobile application platforms and Business understanding. The cost for
the development of the app is determined by the amount of capital invested in the resources, human
resources and registering application etc. Beside this the complexity and platforms (Android, IOS,
Windows) also determines the cost.
4.1. Requirements for App Development:
The development of a mobile application requires various hardware and software requirements. We
can estimate the cost of them as follows:
4.1.1. Hardware Requirements:
The basic hardware requirement depends on some the following things to develop a mobile
application:
S.N. Hardware Sources Estimated Cost (NRs.)
1. Intel 9th Gen i5 9400F
(BigByte, BigByte,
2020)
Rs.23,800.00
2. G. SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR4 (BigByte, 2020) Rs.7,999.00
3. MSI Z390-A PRO LGA1151 (AliteQ, 2020) Rs.25,900.00
4. 512 GB M.2 PCIe GEN3X4 NVMe SSD (BigByte, 2020) Rs 12,800.00
5. IGame Geforce GTX 1050ti Vulcan 4GB (BigByte, 2020) Rs 22,800.00
6. KRATOS E1 500W (BigByte, 2020) Rs 5,800.00
7. Mouse and Keyboard (Daraz, 2020) Rs 2399.00
Total Rs.101,499
Table 1: Hardware requirements
16. 11
4.1.2. Software Requirements
The mobile application requires the following software:
a. PHP Laravel API
b. MySQL Database
c. Android Studio (Java Programming)
d. Firebase Database for User Management and Notification
4.2. Human Resource:
Human resource plays a crucial role to build up an application with the usage of mentioned
hardware and software. Technical skill is the most to develop an app. To develop the app (GHAR
SERVICE), some of the required human manpower and their hiring cost are mentioned in the table
below:
(Sarah White, 2019)

product managers and engineers. Also, it is responsible for illustrating design ideas, designing
graphics user interface elements etc. (resouces.workable.com, 2020)
• QA Specialist:
QA specialist performs the overall testing of an application. (Mobilunity, 2020)
4.3. Software Development Costs:
Our application follows through the process of using google map for gathering location data and
placing orders accordingly. Our application therefore needs to implement Google Maps SDK. The
cost of it depends on application generated requests or map load volumes below the complimentary
$200 per month usage, the usage is free. But when usage that exceeds the $200 monthly credit, it will
be charged to your billing account. (developers.google.com, 2020)
After the completion of the app development to launch the application in platforms such as Google
Play Store, it costs around NPR. 3023.61 which is only one-time payment. And the charge to upload
the app in Apple Store is NPR 11973.52 per year.
4.4. Average Time Completion:
The application development depends on various form factor including the workflow and
effectiveness how well the human resources and requirements are working together to achieve the
deadline. However, with considering any lateness or delays that may hinder performance and bug
fixes it can be estimated up to 5 months. This includes all the steps from planning leading to designing
and development up to the final deployment of the app.
18. 13
Conclusion
In conclusion, the report has the main motive to expand our view into the more practical way
of converting our idea to a real-life system. It taught us the knowledge of how a mobile application
is built and what are the key processes that may become around during it. By completing such task
of gathering and researching we stumbled upon various needed aspects from planning to developing
and finally taking it out to deployment.
From the report, Ghar Service is one of the applications that helps people in need in today’s
ongoing society where finding services can be difficult. A worker that can work around the budget
and under the time is hard to get. And that is really what Ghar Service has the motive to provide.
From designing and discussing the various outcome of the application we learned all the things it
may tackle during implementation to marketing. Working as a mediator Ghar Service can surely be
a possible helper to solve various employment opportunities as well.
Finally, we can say even though Ghar Service may not be the next big thing on the ongoing market
trends but it will be earning its spot for the betterment of the society. What we learn from this
experience will help us in developing a real-life application in the coming future.
