Lee launched a campaign into Pennsylvania hoping for victory on Northern soil to help the peace movement in the North, but was met by Union forces at Gettysburg. Over three bloody days of fighting, the Confederates were unable to break through the Union lines and suffered a devastating defeat when Pickett's Charge into the Union center was repulsed with heavy losses. The defeat at Gettysburg, combined with the loss of Vicksburg to Union forces the next day, dealt a major blow to the Confederacy from which they struggled to recover.
