This document provides an overview of getting started with Puppet, including choosing a Puppet distribution, using modules, Puppet Forge, Hiera, PuppetDB, and scaling Puppet. It also discusses provisioning nodes, writing modules, and using tools like Vagrant to aid in learning Puppet. The document recommends starting simply by downloading the Puppet learning VM, using pre-existing modules from the Forge and GitHub, and not reinventing the wheel when building configurations.

Another popular notion is that of code as data, by which code can be introspected, modified, and used for decision making. Combining the two ideas, the natural implication is that infrastructure is also data, and can be similarly introspected, modified, and used for decision making. In other words, we can do math on infrastructure. We'll look at some interesting ways this data can be filtered, combined, and applied to achieve results which would be difficult to describe directly in code.

Babushka is a lightweight dependency based tool that could help you improve your deployment process.
There are plenty of good dedicated deployment tools out there, but they are often very prescriptive about how your code gets deployed. Can't use SSH or rsync? What happens when you want to deploy to heroku? Rake is fine, but making your deploys robust is a lot of work. Babushka has an elegant solution to this problem, as well as helping to automate other annoying tasks reliably.
JRuby is a great way to use native Java libraries and get around the project overhead of Java, but how do you actually use Java from JRuby? This talk explores building a JRuby application, backed by the portable Java version of Couchbase Mobile.
While JRuby is build to interface with Java, when calling out to JVM land there are all those little hurdles to overcome. Handling Strings correctly, using native Collection types, and interfacing with libraries which expect those native types instead of the ones provided by JRuby, and last but not least Implementing native interfaces to pass around.
Oh and by the way all of this runs on a little Raspberry Pi!

We have built the knife-spork plugin to support our workflow and have 30 engineers making changes about 20 times a day. While this setup keeps configuration changes and package installations consistent across our network, it makes it harder to gradually roll out and test changes on a per node or role basis. In the talk our general workflow will be introduced and explained and how we enable engineers to frequently roll out small changes. Following the general introduction, our workflow for testing changes will be discussed and the library we wrote to enable config flags and gradual roll outs for our infrastructure within our chef recipes.

The perl on most linux distros is a mess. Docker makes it easier to build and packge a local perl and applications. Problem is that Docker's manuals produce a mess of their own.
Distributing perl on top of Gentoo's stage3 distro, busybox, or nothing at all made good alternatives. This talk includes basics of setting up docker, building a local perl for it, and packaging perl or applications into images for use in containers.
perl often doesn't get updated because people don't have a way to know if their current code works with the new one. The problem is that they lack unit tests. This talk describes how simple it is to generate unit tests with Perl and shell, use them to automate solving problems like missing modules, and test a complete code base.

The Design Patterns book is more than just a collection of elegant solutions to common problems, it provides us with a vocabulary and framework for analyzing those problems. Discussing and applying design patterns helps shift the focus from the immediate problem to design. As the Puppet community converged on an idea of what "good" code looks like, Puppet design patterns began to emerge and design became more important. With more and more complex software being modeled in Puppet, those design patterns are more relevant than ever before. As the Puppet language takes on more general purpose and orchestration features, the need for good design patterns only grows with every release. This talk will discuss some of those design patterns and the problems that they solve.

He is also a Project Management Committee member of the Apache CloudStack Project. At cloud.com (acquired by Citrix), he was a founding engineer, often tasked with the thorny details of virtualized networking and storage. Prior to cloud.com, he worked at several Silicon Valley startups in various architectural roles.
Chiradeep has a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT, Bombay and a M.Sc from the University of Alberta. As the first engineer at Nuage Networks, Suresh played a key role in shaping the architecture of the Nuage Virtualized Services Platform (VSP). Suresh’s experience includes extensive protocol development, having developed IP routing and multicast protocols from scratch and deploying them in large ISPs. Suresh was part of the original TiMetra team before becoming part of Alcatel Lucent as Principal Engineer. He then took a role as Director of Engineering at Juniper where he worked on their QFabric product. Earlier in his career, Suresh worked in software engineering at Shasta Networks (Nortel acquired) as well as Fore Systems (Marconi, Ericsson acquired).

He is also the Citrix representative on the OpenDaylight Technical Steering Committee. His background is mainly in Operating Systems and Distributed Systems, and he worked on several middleware technologies from DCE and CORBA in the early days, to J2EE and .NET to SOA and micro-services today. Youcef speaks 4 languages and holds a PhD and an MSc in Computer Science from the French INPG Institute in Grenoble, France.
