(Open) Data Innovation: Sharing Data in the Cloud for Greater Innovation and ...Amazon Web Services
This session highlights how democratizing access to information fosters innovation, improves service delivery, and engages citizens to address big societal challenges. As data becomes more widely available, having access to scalable technology and the multiple data sources that can feed into the technology solution can help create solutions for significant problems in the world. You will hear how the U.S. Treasury launched the USAspending.Gov public dataset as an Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) snapshot to allow the public to access a database of all federal spending data in minutes, making this the first time government agencies have made public expenditures available in one place. You will also hear from the U.S. Census Bureau and how they released the American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) as an AWS Public Dataset. Now, anyone can access and analyze PUMS data in the cloud without needing to download and store their own copy. Attend this session to hear real examples of open data enabling transparency, access, and better citizen services. Learn More: https://aws.amazon.com/government-education/

- An update on the ALISS project outline we gave to the 2009 BCS Health Scotland conference;
- An overview of the activities we’ve been working on with networks of people with Long-Term Conditions;
- A preview of the data-quality-assurance approach we’ve embedded within the informatics element of the project.
An outline of what we've been up to during spring 2010, working on our Open Innovation Process and creating a working model of the ALISS Engine. We collated this for policy leads, so we could seek their advice on our intended future direction
ALISS goes to the NHS Scotland conference 080610Peter Ashe
This is a summary description of what the ALISS project is, the open innovation process we have run this spring (2010) and the working model of the Engine. There are also some ideas for what we intend to do next.

Presentation covers both the tech and a brief history of our efforts re co-production - the theme of the SHINE was 'Outreach' - so I thought "we do some of that too!"

This overview of ALISS focuses more on how the processes of submitting a pointer to a resource to the Engine, and community curation of that resource, are intended to work

this preso is intended as an aid to a voice-over, a desciption of how the Engine might in practice support a distributed, community approach to the collectio, curation, and publication of information. This is fairly speculative, work-in-progress stuff - so it might change a fair bit when we actually develop it.
This presentation was provided by Kathleen Menzies of The University of Strathclyde, and Sarah Shreeves of The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during the NISO Webinar "From ILS to Repository and Back: Data Interoperability," held on January 13, 2010.

ALISS and service design - some stories and impressions - for Service-Design ...Peter Ashe
ALISS first met service-design in 2010, when together we ran a series of innovation workshops. ALISS enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone! Here are a few stories and impressions mostly of how service-design and 'engagement' (so important to ALISS) go very well together

We want to recruit and work with a national cohort on the processes involved with community asset-mapping, individual network-mapping, and 'social prescription', helping participants plan, carry out initial activities (the actual mapping), and follow-through, in a number of locations and communities of geography/interest across Scotland.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
