Geothermal energy has been used for centuries by indigenous people for heating, cooking and bathing using hot springs. The first commercial use of geothermal energy was in the 1800s in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In the 1830s, the first geothermal electric power plant emerged in Italy. Advantages of geothermal energy include being renewable, having no harmful emissions, and providing baseload power reliably. Challenges include requiring suitable geological conditions of hot rocks at the right depths.
