GEOGRAPHY
GEOGRAPHY
Geography is an ancient and honourable
field of learning with it's roots firmly set in
classical antiquaty,The word geography
comes from two Greek words;geo which
means the "earth" and graphe which
means "to write"or "to draw"Geography
then literally means "earth description" it is
a broad and interesting discipline
that brings together two important
aspects of both physical and social
sciences,as well as impinging on the
humanities,
The following definitions of geography
as developed by some prominent
geographers will provide us clear
concept of this interesting field of
study:
•The description and explaination of the
words landscape and a scientific description
of inhabited landscapes and their description
over the globe (Longmans 1965)
•The study of spatial relationships,whose
subject matter includes physical biotic and
societal elements and focuses on the
distribution and relationships of phenomena
according to places(Leonard Clark,1973)

•The accurate orderly and rational
description and interpretation of the variable
character of the earth's surface (Yueng Yue
Man.1973)
•The science of the earth and it's life, dealing with
land, sea and air conditions the distribution of plant
and animal life especially with many and his
industries (John W. Frazier 1982)

•The collection of facts intended to give a
complete picture of a continent a state of
region (James Rubenstein 1989)
•The study of the distribution of
phenomena,how that distribution come
about,and the significance of that
distribution to an understanding of the world
(McKnight 1990)
•The study of the locations and
distributions of phenomena (Human as
well as physical). On the Earth's surface
the reasons or causes behind) these
distributions and predictions on how and
why changes will take place (De Blij and
Muller 1992)
Geography is neither a physical science nor
a social science;rather,it combines
characteristics of both and can be
conceptualized as bridging the gab between
two.As a field of learning,it subdivides or
branches Into two broad and separate
subfields: Physical Geography and Human
Geography
Physical Geography describes and studies the
surface features of the Earth Oceans,
Continents,mountains,hill, rivers,
streams,lakes,ponds,gulfs,bays,estuaries,peni
nsulas, and many other land and water
features physical geographers
make maps showing where metal ores, coal, oil
and natural gas are located in the Earth .they
also map the dimates of the world
Human Geography describes and studies what
human being do in and on land and water Human
Geography,also called Political Geography,uses
Maps that locate the boundaries of countries,
states and country-lines that have been decided
upon by people.it divides the people of the world
into groups called cultures. The people of a
culture share many things in terms of clothing
production,Child-rearing,physical features,and
many things.
