4. History of Nigeria
• Nigeria can be traced back to settlers trading across the middle
east and Africa in 1100 BC. Many African civilizations settled in
Africa such as: Kingdom of Nri, Benin Empire and the Oyo Empire.
• In between the 11th and 15th Century some religions such as Islam
and Christianity came to Nigeria through some empires and
states. It became an independent country in October 1, 1960.
• Lagos was in control by the British in 1851. After the British rule
that lasted until 1960, when the independence movement began.
Nigeria became a republic in 1963. But was under the military rule
for 3 years. The formation of the republic of Biafra, lead to the
three year war of Nigeria. The military seized power again and
ruled for 10 years. A new republic was planned but was aborted
by General Sani Abacha. When Sani Abacha died in 1998, it
marked the end of the three decades of military rule.

Kano, Ibadan and the Abuja city.
• Nigeria is a multinational state with more than 250 ethnic group

the East. All comprised of 60% of total population in Nigeria.

• There is a religion that believes all human beings pass through what is
called Ayanmo which means destiny or fate.

They are known for their expertise in skilled and productive craftsmen,
mainly comprised of blacksmiths, weaving, leatherworking, glassmaking,
ivory and woodcarving.

• The Hausa-Fulani is a ethnolinguistic group of Sudan, a vast region of
the Sahara. Primarily located in the Northern region of Nigeria, the
population in Nigeria is 79 million people. Hausa-Fulani people are a
mix of Hausa and Fulani origin.
• Most who speak Hausa as their main language, but 12-15 million
people speak Fula language called Fulfulde. Some Fulani claim Semitic
origins, the Hausa are indigenous to west Africa.
• At the beginning of the 19th Century, Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio led a
successful Jihad against the Hausa kingdom. After the Jihad Dan Fodio
encouraged intermarriage between the immigrant Fulani to the Hausa
states, thus the ethnic started to mix and form the Hausa-Fulani
ethnicity.
