2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

GEO 215 Week 2 Individual Population and
Urbanization Analysis
You work for the urban city planning department for
UrCity. UrCity has been experiencing phenomenal
growth; population has expanded from 50,000 to 1
million people over the past 10 years. UrCity has offered
homebuilders incentives to build communities on the
outlying edges of the city center, producing multiple
suburbs to reach a population of 2 million over the next
10 years. The goal of the city is to add 25,000 new homes
19. per year to accommodate the projected growth in
population. The problem is there are neither mass
transit systems nor sufficient roadways to transport
people to and from the suburbs into the city. The urban
planning department has been asked to review the
situation. You have been asked to analyze the situation
and present your findings.
· Prepare an 8-slide
Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with detailed
notes that addresses the following:
o Describe your population and the trend of migration.
o Analyze the factors that influence the distribution of
your population.
o Identify the needs of this urban society.
o Provide your thoughts on plans that could slow the
sprawl and correct the problems with commuting.

includes the following:
o A screen shot of a map of the area chosen
o The latitude and longitude of the location
o A description of the physical attributes
o Brief analysis of how climate has shaped the area
o Prediction of how climate may change the area over

GEO 215 Week 4 Individual Landscapes and Resources
Memo
During an investigation of the rise in temperature in
UrCity, you have learned several critical things:
• The agricultural areas are being forced further out
into the desert basin due to suburb expansion.
• There is an increase in demands on fertile lands.
• There is a decreasing water supply, which may be
caused by the rise in UrCity’s temperatures and
changing weather patterns.
• Certain animals are becoming harder to find.
33. The urban planning department has asked you to
prepare a report.
• Write an internal memo of 700- to1,050- words that
addresses the following:
o Describe the various types of agriculture while
discussing your theory on how climate, agricultural
practices, and competing land uses have contributed to
the current situation.
o Analyze the relationships between agriculture,
climate, and biological landscapes.
o Offer a proposal suggesting how to limit the effects of
land competition on resources such as food and
industry.
• Format your memo consistent with APA guidelines.

at least 10 slides that addresses the following questions:
o Are there enough natural resources to sustain your
current population of 1,000?
o Will those same resources also provide for economic
growth? Why or why not?
o How will global warming affect those resources?
o How will you use geographical knowledge to assist
you in planning the future of this city?
• Present your Natural Resources and Growth
Presentation.
o For Local Campus students, these are 10- to 15-
