1. Genre Research
In preparation for the Music Video task I've done some research into
the typical conventions of some musical genres I am considering. The
first being Indie. What I've found is that it is quite diverse in terms of
the content. Some video may be solely performance based, or only
narrative. However, it is also not uncommon to find a video with a
mixture of the two. Examples of a performance music videos are
Sundara Karma's Loveblood video, or Crystallised by The XX. These are
quite artsy, with interesting lighting (a strong red hue in Loveblood, and
projected images onto the band for Crystallised). This is very
conventional of its genre, as there is an emphasis on the aesthetic
appeal of Indie music videos. The lighting helps to also reflect the mood
of the song.
An example of a narrative video would be Two Door Cinema Club's Are
We Ready? (Wreck) music video. This music video voices the bands
opinions on how consumerism has taken over society; and the video
centres around this idea of being bombarded by advertising and
falseness. The band star in the video trying to sell products that include
the lyrics of the song. Like a bottle of beer branded as 'Don't Think At
All'. Indie music video that are about the zeitgeists of the time tend to
be creative and quite out there in concept. The nature of indie music is
often fairly jolly and upbeat, meaning that the music videos that go
along with the singles are also not too serious and light hearted about
the majority of things. There is usually a strong emphasis on the artist in
indie, mean that there is a lot of close-up shots of the artist(s). They are
often represented as casual and down to earth.

2. Conventionally rock music videos are performance based, with the band
on a stage surrounded by fans. These performance videos are often
fuelled with energy; the band jumping around the stage or into the
crowd. The editing pace is usually matched to the tempo of the song,
and the transitions between shots sometimes have flash bulb cuts.
Smoke machines and strobe lighting often found in these videos. Dark
colour schemes are conventional for rock, and black and white colour
grading is often found in this genre, but it is more conventional of indie
rock. An example of music video that uses black and white, is 7 by
Catfish and the Bottlemen. there is a narrative in the music video it
usually revolves around darker themes, especially in heavy metal. For
example in Knives and Pens by Black Veil Brides there is a child
representing the singer, and how he struggled with bully and writing
helped him to cope.

Typical mise-en-scene of this genre would be alcohol and cigarettes. The
band may also been shown to be living a 'rock star life' through the use
of behind the scenes footage.
Rock started out as country and blues merged together. It has been
defined by its energy, rebellion and catchy hooks, but has an almost
infinite number of sub-genres, such as: glam rock, progressive rock,
hard rock, surf and punk.
Iconic/defining artists: David Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Black

3. Sabbath, Beach Boys and The Clash.

Indie music videos are creative and sometimes may not have obvious
purposes, and not make sense with the lyrics, the genre is diverse and
basically a law to its own. An example would be Stop Me If You Think
You've Heard This One Before by The Smiths, which is Morrissey and
some fans riding bikes around Manchester, or The War On Drug's, Red
Eyes, talent show music video.

record labels, independent of majors, and began putting out records
they wanted to hear. Early examples of indie bands include: The Smiths,
Joy Division, The Fall and Primal Scream. So with this in mind there's no
wonder that it's so hard to define what indie is now in the modern day
context, as it didn't particularly start out as a genre. Genre is quite hard
to categorise anyway, because artists usually belong in multiple and
they don't want to be stuck. Also this is because one might start of and
then split into multiple genres.
