Horror Genre Conventions; 
Setting: Normally somewhere which is already scary such as a worn down mansion, a forest, 
graveyards, but sometimes they can be based in normal places depending on the type of movie 
it is. 
Normally based around one person to be the main character it will follow while people are killed 
around them. 
Will normally contain an antagonist which is normally not real like a ghost, demon or zombies, 
but can also contain a crazed person who it out to kill everyone. 
It can contain a relationship between two characters. 
It would normally be dark for an added effect to make it scarier. 
Sub/Hybrid Genres 
Action Horror: These normally contain lots of gun fights or scenes where people 
are fighting in some way; a good example would be any Resident Evil movie. 
Comedy Horror: These are normally not serious about being a horror, and you 
nearly almost see every movie with this genre is normally a spoof of some kind most 
renown would be any Scary Movie film or they can just be a general movie and one 
known for that is Shaun of the Dead. 
Psychological Horror: These films are about playing with the characters fears, guilt 
and beliefs and use lots of eerie and relevant music; a film well known for this is The 
Ring. 
Science Fiction Horror: These horrors normally about things from other planets but 
are made to scare, not many movies have this but one that is very well know would 
be Alien vs. Predator. 
Gothic Horror: Gothic horrors are normally about mystical creatures such as 
werewolf’s and vampires.
