ABOUT
 The topic of gendered stereotypes and discrimination has been a controversy for an extremely long time.
With how society is progressing in current times, this topic is basically everywhere recently.
 Gendered stereotypes in today’s society unfortunately cause a lot of discrimination. For example, men
are commonly viewed as terrible parents, which causes male fathers to have very little influence in their
children’s lives.
 Another example is how females struggle greatly with taking on any type of job where they are put in
charge of other people. Here, other people tend to view the female as hostile and pushy.
HISTORY
 The issue of gendered stereotypes have existed for as long as humans have, and unfortunately still do
exist today. Unfortunately, since this is a topic that stretches back to the beginning of humanity, there is
not a set in stone history or timeline for this topic.
 Earlier humans differentiated the genders due to physical attributes which made accomplishing certain
tasks easier for a particular gender rather than the other gender. For example, males tend to build
muscle faster and more easily than females, so hunting or manual labor would have been easier to do
for them than females.
 In current times, this primal need for the separation of genders to accomplish work no longer exists,
however, the connotations that were attached to each gender still exist. For example, females are still
seen as the weaker sex. Today both of the genders should be seen as equal in the eyes of job
opportunities, but discrimination due to stereotypes still exist.
EXPERTS IN THE FIELD
 Maya Angelou
 Maya Angelou was an incredible spokesperson who constantly advocated to fight against gender and race
discrimination throughout her entire life. Unfortunately Ms. Angelou passed away on May 28, 2014, however, her
work touched the lives of many people and impacted society in a great way.
 Gloria Steinem
 Gloria Steinem is an incredible journalist who was seen as a feminist leader in the 1960’s and 1970’s during the
feminist movement. She is still seen as a great spokesperson and activist in favor of combatting gender-based
discrimination.
 Angela Davis
 Angela Davis is a political activist who was a great leader during the feminist movement from the 1960’s and still
currently fights against the injustices of racial or gender discrimination.
QUESTIONS
 How come gender based stereotypes and discrimination have existed for so long, especially in today’s
society which changes so quickly due to technological advances?
 What changes have been made recently in combatting gender discrimination that would have been
viewed as blasphemy 20 years ago?
 How much of normal life is actually based on discrimination and if looked at from an outside point of
view would be seen as absolutely unsettling?
 What movements are going on right now to combat gender-based discrimination?
OPPOSITION
 Many people believe that gender-based stereotypes exist because males and females are born with
certain attributes that make them fit into society’s definition of gender.
 Some example of this would be how people believe females to be naturally submissive and emotional or
how men are naturally aggressive. Another example would be how people tend to believe that a female’s
main goal in life should be to build a family while men are seen as never wanting to settle down.
 People believe that these are traits that each gender is born with rather than being forced into these
roles by society.
 Many scientific studies have been conducted on this subject and none of them concretely prove this to
be true, in fact a lot of them show the opposite, where these natural traits are actually society molding
people into a particular gender.
