This essay looks at different contemporary issues associated with age, gender, ethnicity in the
working environment; which will particularly incorporate a discussion of gender relations,
stereotyping and sources of inequality. The purpose of this essay is to fundamentally consider how
organisational culture, norms of work, stereotypes and son on may impact on the opportunities
people have. I am going to focus on the inequalities and who does what sort of work in the general
workforce and more particularly, on women 's roles. The given tv programmes are Shortland Street,
Dr Ken and Age discrimination from channel 4 (Diane Parsley). I will critically be observing and
state my reflection on these videos based on inequality in a workplace and who does what kind of
job in the workplace.

deliberate inconsistency between individuals with leadership position who control over resources,
goals and outcomes. They are additionally in charge of decision making such as organizing work

Diversity is increasing in the western countries rapidly, hence it leads to discrimination in race,
ethnicity and gender. The question that arises is about fairness, appropriateness and equality between
among races and ethnicities. The paper is focused determining whether offenders are discriminated
because their race in parole decision making process. Parole is permanently or temporarily release
from prison or from offender's sentence. There are three types of parole releases: discretionary

Is Dining A Good Chance?
In college, does dining with only members of one's ethnicity and participating in ethic
organizations/activities decline ethnic relations on campus? On one hand, only dining with one's
ethic group segregates the campus by race. Also, participating in ethnic organizations and activities
could make people of different ethnicities feel segregated or left out. On the other hand dining by
ethnic background could just be people hanging out with whom they enjoy to be around or relate to.

going on between different ethnicities. As college get further into the school years, it will become
less likely that students will break these patterns. This is because bonds and friendships have been

organizations are open to people of any ethnicity, many people of the other ethnicities feel

Stakeholders
The participants from the community were between 16 and 80 years old. The researcher ensured to
include a balanced group that covered gender, ethnicity and socio–economic status. Employment
status was not a variable used in this study. The researcher used ten jurisdictions nationwide to help
ensure coverage of the majority of subcultures within the U.S. population. There were three large
police departments, four medium police departments, and three small police departments. The
community population corresponded to the size of the department. Each jurisdiction included poor,
lower class, middle class and upper class respondents. Other found research studies have only
focused on individual jurisdictions and communities or country compared to country (Schuck &
Rosenbaum, 2005). Those were either too narrow or too broad for the intent of this research project.
Research Methods
The research involved self–completion questionnaires covering the experiences of police officers
and community members within the ten jurisdictions researched. Furthermore, it included rural and
urban locations and the target population were those people who had any type of interaction with the
police. It was a cost–effective way to obtain a large sample base in a reasonable amount of time. In
order to appeal to the entire population, city officials would have to agree to place the questionnaires
on the city and police department websites with electronic submission as an option. This

The purpose of this paper is to assess two research based articles from a psychology journal from
two different time periods. The assessment was to compare the way gender, ethnicity, and class was
represented in each of the articles and how they differ from each time period. The articles were
chosen from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The first article was from 1976 titled,
"Impact of fear of success and sex–role attitudes on women's competitive achievement" (Peplau,
1976). The second article of interest was titled, "Psychological well–being and job stress predict
marital support interactions: A naturalistic observational study of dual earner couples in their
homes" (Wang & Repetti, 2014). The piece from 1976 was written by Letitia Anne Peplau and she
wanted to compare results from a previous experiment done by M.S. Horner in 1972 that measured
the fear if success on women's achievement to her own experiment on the same topic. "Horner
suggests that many women are in conflict about intellectual and professional achievement" (Peplau,
1976). Peplau wanted to compare Horner's results to her own results when it concerned women's
"sex–role" attitudes of traditionalism and liberalism. The goal was to see if there was a difference in
the fear factor of success between the two ideologies of dating women when they were on their own

My definition of professionalism is to be as professional as possible when in the classroom, meeting
with colleagues, and talking to parents and guardians. Professionalism to me is also introducing new
cultures and holidays to my students only after doing an immense amount of research and consulting

Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich's Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is
discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is.
Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic
background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most
people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than
feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic

Coethinicity argues that tribal identification is the most socially salient identity in Kampala, Uganda.
Based on a series of experiments, the authors of Coethnicity found that homogenous ethnic identity
was crucial to the pursuit of the common good based on the shared ethnic norm of reciprocity.
Contrary to this idea, I will argue that this assumption is empirically questionable and ultimately
unhelpful in the broader quest to understand how "ethnicity" and politics relate because there are
other factors involved that Coethnicity does not take into account. Before expanding on this idea I

Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in American Law
The Virginia Military Institute was a higher education school in Virginia. It claimed to train the
leaders of the future, or "citizen–soldiers" and impart to its students great discipline; however, it
only enrolled male students. In 1996, the United States government sued the state of Virginia and
the Virginia Military Institute for its male–only policy as a violation of the Fourteenth amendment's
Equal Protection Clause. The District Court ruled in the school's favor. The Fourth Circuit
demanded Virginia to reverse this constitutional violation (Van Camp). In response to this
complaint, Virginia proposed a similar program for women: the Virginia Women's Institute for
Leadership. The District Court found that this plan satisfied the equal protection requirement, and
the Fourth Circuit affirmed that although these two institutions would differ in prestige (and the
historical benefit), they would still offer essentially similar educational opportunities. The United
States then appealed to the Supreme Court, and it raised the issue whether this new women's only
academy satisfied the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. The Supreme court ruled,
in a 7–to–1 decision, that Virginia Military Institute's male–only policy was unconstitutional. In

Throughout the second season of ABC's American Crime, there were an extreme amount of ways in
which race, sexuality, gender, and ethnicity were depicted, troubled, and interrogated. While
watching the second season of American Crime in class, it almost seemed as if the entire series was
made just to explore each and every component of this course, Ethnics 1010. The series successfully
explored through numerous situations with all of these important components that we have
discussed throughout the semester. However, there happens to be three specific components that I
would like to elaborate on throughout this essay. The first component that I would like to elaborate
on is race. There are a lot of people throughout the series with a large amount of diversity as far as
race goes. Secondly, I would like to discuss a few aspects in which class was a very critical
component in the series. Class was extremely important because there are various people who are
apart of a different class, or have a different socioeconomic status. My last component that I would
like to elaborate on is sexuality. From the very beginning of the series, sexuality was an extremely
critical topic. Sexuality seemed to be the base structure of this series simply because everything was
based off of a key situation that occurred in the first episode, which revealed itself more and more as

The stereotypes derived from ethnic differences are a crucial source of inequality found in education
outcomes. According to Steele and Aronson (1995, p. 808), the concept of stereotype threat refers to
the condition of individuals at risk of conforming to the negative stereotypes associated with them,
which lead to self–characterisation. This analysis of stereotype threat is important because ethnicity
plays a role in reproducing unequal academic performances. For instance, past research has
identified poorer mathematical performance in white men who were confronted with the stereotype
of Asian superiority in maths, compared to those without such confrontation (Aronson et al. 1999,
pp. 37–38). Similarly, a study has proven how the cultural stereotype of black's intellectual
inferiority is an affecting factor to the academic performances of African American college students,
as they perform poorer when stereotype was reinforced (Steele & Aronson 1995). These studies

the ability to generate inequality in educational outcomes. Additionally, the different cultural

Gender
Gender can hold a strong influence in how an individual survives the death of a loved one. The
general differences between males and females and the management of the grief process carries
through from one culture to another. Most adults manage grief in the same way with the exception
of parents losing a child. When parents loose a child they often experience the same emotions but
they may not always be showing it in the same way (Christiansen 2014). Girls employed
significantly more strategies to cope with stress compared to boys. (Kauser & Munir 2004). One
study that was referenced in the book Understanding Dying, Death, and Bereavement, women had
greater tendencies to self–mutilation and crying, while men would tend to direct aggression and
anger away from themselves (Leming & Dickinson 2016). During a traditional African funeral, the
women would cry and moan, while the men would dance and sing, "men are not to cry in front of
women because they would appear weak before the very group they are supposed to protect"
(Leming & Dickinson 2016). This way of thinking has the greatest influence on the way men grieve
across many cultures and societies. One can wonder if that way of thinking hadn't been implemented

The United States of America is known for being a country filled with people of many different
ethnic backgrounds. Likewise, the student population in schools is just as diverse as it continues to
grow. Lynch (2015) notes that schools are expected to teach their students "how to synthesize
cultural differences into their knowledge base" as this will help "facilitate students' personal and
professional success in a diverse world" (para. 8). Educators must be able to provide for the diverse
needs of students and are expected to equip students with skills that can lead to healthy development

It is said that America is the most diverse country in the world; ironically it is also the most
prominent. It is ironic because it is expected that with diverse people in one place they will want to
seclude themselves but in the US; it shows that when there is a similar connection, such as language,

Brent Staples On Ethnicity And Gender
Like so many people, Brent Staples was judged based on ethnicity and gender. Brent Staples, an
African American man, has been mistaken for a criminal countless times because of his race. The
first time this happened, he scared a young white women when he turned the corner at night, and she
ran off, convinced that he was "a mugger, a rapist, or worse." Brent shares instances of people
locking their car doors or crossing the street when he walked by, but he says he can't blame them, as
"young black males are drastically overrepresented among the perpetrators of... violence." He
discusses his childhood in Chester, Pennsylvania where there is "gang warfare, street knifings, and
murders" that many of his friends and family have gone to prison or been killed over. He mentions
two extreme situations in which he is mistaken for a burglar and tells the story of a journalist
mistaken for the killer he was reporting on. Brent Staples makes it clear that these occurrences are
continuous and common, and so he has had to make changes to accommodate for these terrified
white people in public places by, for example, whistling classic music at night. The point he is trying
to make with this article is that Caucasians have some common misconceptions about African
Americans, often assuming they are all criminals, even though Brent has clearly illustrated himself
as "one of the good boys."

Americans towards the North, especially into urban areas closer proximity to white neighborhoods.
A popular destination was Harlem, New York. United States went through an era known as the

"Passing" was a recurring theme that was used through most literature and film by most African
Americans. "Passing" is referred to the capability of one to be considered as a member of social

achieving social acceptance. Nella Larsen's novel Passing uses the theme to describe a biracial
character blending into the white race through times when legal and social traditions classified the

the role of sexuality that is written throughout the novel. Larsen shows the homosexual desire both

Burma, also known as Myanmar, has been independent since 1948 and is involved in one of the
world's longest on–going civil war. The British and Japanese occupation from 1924 to 1948
exacerbated tensions between ethnic groups. The country is also characterised by its unstable
political regime, mainly military ones, and its diverse ethnic background. The main ethnic group are
the Bamar and occupy 60% of the land (Laoutsides and Ware, 2016). But no less than 135
ethnicities occupy the 40% left. Identity in the country is seen as the main explanation as to why the
country cannot solve its political problems and is in constant conflict. We can wonder however to
what extent can the conflict be understood by solely focusing on identity.
If identity is an important factor in the emergence of tensions it is only one facet of the problem.
Alternative theories to the identity explanation on the causes of civil war are polarised between
grievance and greed theories (Ballentine and Nitzschke, 2003). However, it is possible to have a
complete understanding of the causes and dynamics of ethnic conflict when combining these two set
of theories together. Conflict arises from the grievance of an ethnic group but is then maintained by
the actors' greed.
First, we will see the limits of identity theory in explaining ethnic conflicts using the example of

The topic of culture, ethnicity and gender issues within psychology requires more attention;
particularly, within the therapeutic setting. It was refreshing to see that finally, within this chapter
these topics among other were finally being addressed in further depth than before. What was
particularly striking in this week's readings was the role of privilege and awareness.
In the article by Hernandez–Wolfe and McDowell (2012), the idea to shift the focus on oppression
to a focus on privilege in counseling and psychology is imperative. After reading the article I find
this useful seeing that once this shift can be made, awareness of privilege and lack of privilege
becomes essential to help elicit action for change. Although it was mentioned that sometimes action
is not always achieved, the awareness piece is becoming increasingly important, especially in
counseling psychology. As mentioned in the article, moving from oppression, focused to privilege
focused reminded me a little of solution focused therapy. Focusing on the positives and strengths to
elicit change. Although privilege is not necessarily a strength, it is an important concept to focus on.
Understanding that, many people who do not have to experience a lack of privilege difficulties in the

The story in Acts 8:26–40, which hold what could be a vital point of the first half of Acts of Apostle,
give an account of the baptism of an unusual character presented in Acts 8:27 as an Ethiopian, a
eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopian. The biblical character exemplifies in
concrete form as multiple dissimilarities of class, race, gender, and perhaps religion and sexuality as

and culture. This results in discrimination and oppression. The fact of a person's identity has never
been neutral. The way a person is treated by society, according to how they are perceived, is the
cause of identifying and shaping an identity with social factors that provide a negative outlook on
cultural tolerance. The complex reality of identity is a factor that is influenced by the culture a
person was raised in and handed down to by their families. This causes society to take that factor
and turn it into a way of establishing an identity upon people. Due to a resemblance to an ethnic
background, people are compared according to their social, financial, and behavioral status. Society
will always attempt to identify a person to their best knowledge to feel a sense of belonging and
being at a minimal level of thinking with ethnic groups to be comfortable with racial differences.
