Gender factor refers to teen depression where gender differences between boys and girls is a main contributing factor. Before puberty, depression rates are equal between boys and girls, but by age 13 girls experience depression at nearly double the rate of boys. Depression is more common in people with a history of trauma, abuse, or disability. Prevention efforts include creating a safe environment, expressing feelings, smiling, talking, and physical activity. Case studies show prevention can help depression subside quickly while lack of support can exacerbate symptoms.
