This document summarizes a workshop on gender equality and inclusive growth in Central and East Asia. It finds that societies with gender equality tend to have better economic development and companies with diverse leadership perform better financially. However, while Central Asia initially made progress on gender equality during the Soviet era, advances have faced setbacks since transitions to independence. The financial crisis of 2009 further exacerbated inequality. Specific issues discussed include unequal access to education, health, economic opportunities and decision-making between men and women as well as stereotypes and gendered migration patterns. The document argues for policies promoting empowerment of both men and women to build more resilient and inclusive societies.
