The garter snake is a small, yellow and black striped snake that lives throughout North America in forests, prairies, streams, wetlands and meadows. It grows up to two feet long, uses its tongue to smell, eats small animals like fish, birds and rodents, gives live birth to up to 50 babies at a time, and comes in 13 different species.
