Mobile devs have been without tools like continuous integration and automated testing, which enable delivery of high-quality apps more rapidly. A key piece of the solution for mobile is Appium, an open-source, cross-platform, language-agnostic mobile automation framework you can use to write automated UI tests for Android and iOS apps (native, hybrid, web), to be run on emulators or devices.
In this talk we will explore the philosophy that underlies the work behind Appium, including the open-source nature of Appium’s diverse, active and friendly community. Acceptance tests are high-level tests to verify the completeness of user stories (end user features) for a developed product. It is said that while lower level unit and integration tests confirm that the product has been made right, only the acceptance tests confirm that the product actually does the right thing.
Robot Framework is a generic test automation framework for acceptance testing and acceptance test-driven development. The key feature of Robot Framework is its extensible test syntax, which allows to write tests in a business-readable domain-specific language, including BDD (behavior driven development) style for executable acceptance criteria.
Selenium is a browser automation framework. It allows to use real browsers in acceptance testing so that all effects of CSS and JavaScript taken into account, including possible differences between different browsers.
This talk walks through alternative ways for using Robot Framework and Selenium to perform acceptance testing, including
* testing live sites (readonly)
* testing sandboxed Plone sites with live data (beforestorage + demostorage)
* testing sandboxed Plone add-ons (plone.app.testing + plone.app.robotframework)
* testing Sphinx documentation (while generating screenshots)
Appium: Automation for Mobile Apps

Develop android application with mono for android

Introducing chrome apps (ogura)

It allows creation of automated tests to validate mobile apps across many platforms including Android and iOS. Some key benefits of Appium include the ability to write tests once and run them on multiple platforms using a single codebase. It also supports integration with various tools for continuous integration, behavior driven development, reporting and page object modeling. Appium works by having an Appium server that mobile app testing clients communicate with via a JSON object of desired capabilities to start an automation session on the targeted app.

3x3 Speeding Up Mobile Releases

Continuous integration is old hat in the web frontend and backend world, but it’s still rare for native mobile apps. For true continuous integration, we ship every commit directly to production – but this is clearly not realistic in the world of native apps, where binaries must be published in the App Store (with Apple’s week-long review process) and Google Play, then downloaded by members.
On the engineering side, we needed an aggressive goal to ensure we didn’t fall back into the pattern of manual verification of each release. We also wanted our product partners to be free to ship as often as they want (without annoying members of course!). We settled on a rule that we call “3x3”.
3x3: Speeding Up Mobile Releases
The document discusses LinkedIn's transition to a 3x3 release cycle for their flagship mobile app, releasing new versions every three hours. Previously they released monthly. The new process involves continuous integration pipelines for code review, static analysis, unit testing, and UI testing on alpha and beta builds. Tests are automated and run in parallel on emulators to speed the process. Partner teams now validate through automation. Risk is minimized through feature flags and A/B testing. Areas for future improvement include further automating the release process and adding performance testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
