2. Function notation
• Function notation is writing something using the form f(x).
• So, an equation like y=3x-7 in function notation is just f(x)=3x-7
• Just remember f(x) is just a fancy way to write y.
3. How to solve an equation using function
notation
• So, if a question says f(x)=3x-7, find f(-4), you replace all of your x’s with -4.
• Try this one.The solution is on the next slide.
4. • This means that when x=-4, y=-19.You can also think of it as the point (-4, -19) is on this
line.
5. Need a more challenging one?
• Given that 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥2 + 7𝑥 − 8, find f(-3). Look on the next slide for the
worked out answer.
6. • Using this function, when x=-3, y=-20.That is what f(-3)=-20 means.
