This document discusses different sociological perspectives on the role and functions of education. Functionalists view education as serving four main functions: transmitting cultural values, social control, economic training, and social selection. Marxists argue that education reproduces social inequalities and promotes the values of the ruling class. The New Right perspective supports marketizing education through school choice and competition, but also sees a role for the state in establishing standards. Criticisms of these views are also presented.
