Technology And The World

So imagine a world without technology, do you think you could live in it? Most people

probably couldn’t. Everyday people are inventing new electronics, most of the times they’re

made to help people, or so they think. A lot of people are very lazy, thanks to electronics there

are a lot of things you just don’t even have to get up to move or change. Now obviously when a

person makes these things their intention is to help, to help make things better or easier.

But what if one day all technology just disappeared, it’s very unlikely many people could survive

for too long. Electronics are good and bad, and we are very dependent on technology.

What if one day all electricity runs out, nothing works your car won’t start there is no

power in your house, your cellphone is dead, what do you do? People are not just dependent on

technology but electricity as well, without electricity in reality if you think about it, nothing

would work. “A whopping 85 percent of U.S. adults and three quarter of teens now own a

cellphone” (Chen). Most people you ask would say they could live without their phone. But their

phone is the least of their worries, technology impacts just about everything around us. So if

electricity was to ever run out, we would just be living in the dark ages. Most people aren’t ready

for that, since technology has become more and more advance, people have become less and less

active. Studies show that more students know how to play a computer game than ride a bicycle.

More can use a smartphone than tie their own shoes, now that’s amazing. So as you can see

technology isn’t all that great sure they have an app for just about anything on a smartphone, but

if you can’t do it the old way how much good does it do you.

Now, don’t get me wrong technology is very good in many ways as well;schools are

constantly trying to provide better ways for students to learn threw technology. Most classes now

are taught threw technology, some form of it. As a daily basis, technology is used commonly in
Fraire2

almost all the classes, in very different ways. “Schools use a mix of technological equipment to

facilitate learning and students are using technology to make studying and homework quicker

and easier, students learn the basic computer skills such as typing, documenting formatting and

internet usage at school” (Dennis). In most schools, they try to provide a computer or some type

of electronic device for each student. The waysTeachers are presenting their material is involving

to include interactive technologies. Interactive white boards allow for presentations of materials,

the preserving of instructional materials and direct access to the internet and online resources.

Technology is good and bad in many different ways.

Technology also helps students with special needs, they benefit greatly from this. There

are many forms of technology that help kids with special needs such as voice recognition

software allows students who are blind or others unable to use a traditional computer and

software system to utilize computers and other devices. For Example, maybe a blind student

taking an online test, if he can’t read then he has to have another person to help, but with the help

of technology and text to speech software it makes it possible for him to carry out the test alone

and un aided. Elevators help people that are physically impaired get around to different floors.

There are many technological things that could help people in many ways.

How do you get to where you’re going every day? Probably some sort of transportation

vehicle. This is a part of technology, not like the old days where you would strap a wagon on to a

horse and ride. Today it is much different; every year technology is making cars more and more

advance. For example electric or hybrid cars, these cars are great for the environment they don’t

send out bad gases into the atmosphere and they save you some money by not stopping at the gas

station, another good thing about technology. But, there are also bad things about the technology

you can put into a car. More and more car manufacturers are adding much more advanced
Fraire3

electronics to their automobiles, it’s pretty common now to see a TV or some sort of media

player in a vehicle, these can be some bad distractions to a driver and to the passengers.

So there you go, technology is very controversial many people have different opinions

about it. One thing is for sure, people probably could live without it we depend on it too much in

our daily lives. It impacts just about everything in our lives, it has its pros and cons people might

have more good to say about it but in the long run it has its down sides. Either way as people

become more intelligent and learn more and more, there will be more new more advanced

electronics. Right now smart phones and electric cars and all these new things that are coming

out, this is just the beginning there is much more to come in the future.

The Professional I choose to interview for my paper was Kaye Pierce our media center

coordinator. Her job is to manage all resources for the school, and acquire more. She leads

workshops and teaches students about technology, her job is to stay on top of technology and

know everything so she can keep everyone else informed. In her personal life she works with

technology so much at work that when she gets out she doesn’t even feel like using technology

as much. She says herself “I would rather read a book or go for a walk”. In her workplace

technology has helped her its make some tasks more efficient some faster. One of the questions I

asked her was what kind of technology does she think would benefit students more in the future,

her answer was that students should just take advantage of the resources that they have now.

Obviously a person that works with technology should be trained in how to handle

technology. Ms. Pierce isn’t trained as much as you would think, she has took a class and she is a

tech facilitator, but besides that most of what she know is just things that she learns just by

reading and learning while she goes. From what she can see one of the major downsides about
Fraire4

technology lately has been students having trouble learning basic skills, like writing. Students

use short cuts like texting, and all that shows when they’re writing a paper or things like that. She

also thinks that people are too reliant on technology, she thinks that in the next coming years

there will be a lot of health related issues, and I agree with her. “Blackberries, keyboards, game

controllers used excessively, in awkward positions, or in excessive force, contribute to wear and

tear on the body” (Hanson). Also many back problems, including curvature of the spine, can be

created from working up to seven hours, sitting at a computer, playing games, watching

television, or operating a machine, this can also cause chronic knee pain and lower back

problems, and shorten, or tighten the hamstrings (lynthomas). The maximum volume created by

gadgets such as mp3 players, in ear headphones and Bluetooth headsets is equivalent to a jet

plane taking of nearby (lynthomas). An EU report revealed that listening at 89 decibels for an

hour a day, over 5 years, can cause permanent loss of hearing (lynthomas). So imagine there are

people that walk around all day with earphones in their ears with the music as loud as can be and

it’s not healthy. But companies aren’t always going to tell you all the health risks in detail,

they’re just going to tell you the main ones.

The impact of technology can have good and bad consequences, depending on the usage

of every person. Not everyone uses technology for the same purpose, some is for entertainment

and some is for work. But overall the controversy over whether technology is good or bad will

always continue and be debated through time as the technology expands.
