Front cover research
1. Masthead
‘HipHop Weekly’ is clearly shown to be a Hip Hop magazine, by the title. On every
cover the masthead is white and bold. ‘The Source,’ unlike ‘HipHop Weekly’ is not
shown to be a Hip Hop magazine through the title. However, the ‘O’ in the title has a
mike in the middle of it, which suggests it is a music magazine. ‘The Source’ is a
niche magazine as it has an audience that know what the magazine is about. The
masthead of ‘The Source’ does not have a house style as on every issue the colour
of the text changes, but the positioning doesn't. The masthead isn't conventional
either as the word ‘THE’ is rotated vertically along side the word ‘SOURCE'
Skyline
The skyline on both ‘THE SOURCE’ and ‘HipHop Weekly’ both contain information of
people that are going to appear in the magazine. They both give a quick
sentence/quote that describes what that article will be about.
Main Image
The main image on ‘THE SOURCE’ are posed pictures that seemed to have been
taken just for the magazine. They take up the whole page with everything else
placed on top. This is similar to ‘HipHop Weekly’ however the pictures have not
necessarily been posed for. ‘THE SOURCE’ done not have any other images on the
front cover. In contrast ‘HipHop Weekly’ does as there are images that relate to
Colour Scheme cover lines on the left column.
‘HipHop Weekly’ has no clear colour scheme as different things are different colours,
there are not two main colours used throughout each front page this can come across
as confusing for readers. In ‘THE SOURCE’ however colour schemes appear to be
clear. In the examples red, black and gold is the colour scheme including the clothes
on the person in the main images; in the other green, yellow and white is the colour
scheme. However the person in the main image is wearing all back which sets them
apart from the rest of the page and allows them to stand out to readers.
