This chart is showing the population aged 65 and above in more detail. By smaller
age groups.
The older the age group, the greater the increase by 2035. Those aged 65 to 69 are
projected to increase by around a quarter, those aged 90 and over are projected to
more than double.

Registered nurse vacancies
 The estimated vacancy rate was 12.3%, equivalent to around 5,100
vacant posts at any given time in 2017/18.
 The vacancy rate has risen threefold since 2012/13 when the rate
was 4.1%.

Registered nurse zero-hours
contracts
 Almost a fifth of registered nurses were employed on zero-hours contracts
(18%).
 This proportion has decreased from 20% in 2012/13, and has consistently
been less frequently used compared to all adult social cares overall (the
majority of which were care workers, for which zero-hours contracts are
more prevalent).

 42,000 registered nurse jobs in adult social care
 Registered nurses were one of the only job roles to see a significant decrease in jobs between
2012 and 2017 (down 9,200 or 18% since 2012).
This information presents workforce estimates produced by Skills for Care using the National
Minimum Dataset for Social Care (NMDS-SC).

 Almost a third of registered nurses (32.4%) were estimated to have
left their role in within the past 12 months, equal to around 11,500
leavers.
 The turnover rate rose consistently from 2012/13, peaking at 36.8% in
2015/16, but has since fallen and become closer to the average rate
across adult social care.

Registered nurse nationality
 In 2017/18, 64% of registered nurses had a British nationality, 17% had an
EU nationality and 19% had a non-EU nationality.
 This equates to around 7,200 registered nurse jobs held by people with an
EU nationality and 8,000 held by people with a non-EU nationality.
 The proportion of registered nurse jobs held by people with an EU nationality
has risen between 2012/13 and 2017/18, from 8% to 17%, from 4,000 to
7,200 jobs.
