From Little Things Big
Things Grow.
By Jessica Renton 6F
Gather round people I'll tell you a story. An eight year long story of power and pride. 'Bout British Lord Vestey
and Vincent Lingiarri. They were opposite men on opposite sides
That bit of the song is where Lord Vestey
( a white man ) who had power and another
man named Vincent Lingiarri
( a dark man ) who was aboriginal. Vestey took
Vincent's’ land and Vincent wanted it back.
They didn’t really like each other either.
Vestey was fat with money and muscle. Beef was his business, broad was his door Vincent was lean
and spoke very little He had no bank balance, hard dirt was his floor From little things big things grow
From little things big things grow
This means that Vestey was fat because he got
his food, he had lots of money and he was a
farmer. Vincent was quiet and poor and he
lived in the outback. From Little things big
things grow means if you have something very
little it can turn very big.
Gurindji were working for nothing but rations, Where once they had gathered the wealth of the land. Daily the
oppression got tighter and tighter. Gurindji decided they must make a stand
That part means that Vincent's’ tribe were
working for Vestey and he paid them very little
money. They worked so much and got very
little in return so they decided to stop and
protest.
They picked up their swags and started off walking. At Wattie Creek they sat themselves down.
Now it don't sound like much but it sure got tongues talking. Back at the homestead and then
in the town
This means that they got their things and
were walking away and at a creek they sat
down and a lot of people were talking about
it in a lot of places.
Vestey man said I'll double your wages. Seven quid a week you'll have in your hand. Vincent said uhuh we're
not talking about wages. We're sitting right here till we get our land. Vestey man roared and Vestey man
thundered. You don't stand the chance of a cinder in snow.
This part means that Vestey told them he would
double the money they got to $7 a week if they
kept working. Vincent said no we will sit here
until we have our land and Vestey got mad and
said they don’t stand a chance.
Then Vincent Lingiarri boarded an aeroplane landed in Sydney, big city of lights And daily he went round
softly speaking his story To all kinds of men from all walks of life And Vincent sat down with big politicians
This affair they told him is a matter of state Let us sort it out, your people are hungry Vincent said no thanks,
we know how to wait
In this bit the songwriter talks about Vincent
going on a plane to Sydney to talk to people
about what has happened. He went to
parliament and told them he wanted his land
back. The politicians said that they will sort it
out with some food but Vincent said no we will
wait.
Then Vincent Lingiarri returned in an aeroplane Back to his country once more to sit down And he told his people let the stars keep
on turning We have friends in the south, in the cities and towns Eight years went by, eight long years of waiting Till one day a tall
stranger appeared in the land And he came with lawyers and he came with great ceremony And through Vincent's fingers poured a
handful of sand
This part is about when Vincent went back to
his family to tell them that people are sorting it
out in the big city. 8 years went by then a man
came named Gough Whitlem. They held a big
ceremony then Gough picked up some sand
they were standing on and poured it into
Vincent’s hands.
That was the story of Vincent Lingiarri But this is the story of something much more How power and privilege
can not move a people Who know where they stand and stand in the law
The last part is saying that the song was about
Vincent and Vestey but it is more than just that.
It was about how if someone has power you
can’t move people or something when they
have rights.
I love this song because I think it is just
more that telling people about Vincent and
Vestey. It’s about if you have something you
love you should fight for it and do whatever
you have to do to keep it.
Thanks for reading!
