Author identifiers in the Netherlands
• Digital Author Identifiers (DAI) developed within the DARE programme (2005)
• Unique number for Dutch authors
• DAIs currently managed in the Nederlandse Thesaurus van Auteursnamen (NTA) by OCLC and KB
• DAIs can be generated via a workflow in Dutch CRIS METIS
• DAIs in NARCIS (National Academic Research and
Collaborations Information System)

Why replace it?
• DAI is a national standard, while research takes places in an
international environment
• Rise of new international author identifiers, such as ISNI,
ResearcherID and ORCID
• Transition from GGC (national) to OCLC WorldShare
• New CRISs (Converis, Pure) : workflow for the creation of DAIs is
changing
• ISNI and ORCID interoperability

What are ISNIs?
• ISNI is an ISO standard for the identification of persons in general (e.g.
literary authors, artists, fictional characters)
• Available since 2011; currently more than 6,5 million identifiers
• Like ORCID, ISNI uses 16 numbers
• OCLC is converting the majority of DAIs into ISNI identifiers through VIAF
(Virtual International Authority File)

• Self-registration by researchers
• Adopted by academic publishers,
funding agencies, CRIS
• No central quality control
• Focuses on persons in general
• Assigned by authorised
organisations
• Use in library systems

Dutch ORCID Implementation Pilot
• National ORCID implementation pilot coordinated by SURF (collaborative ICT organisation for Dutch
education and research)
• Local implementations currently limited to five universities:
- Leiden University
- Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
- Delft University of Technology
- Eindhoven University of Technology
- Utrecht University

Technical implementation
Adding the ORCID API in CONVERIS.
Leiden is currently the only Dutch university running CONVERIS
• Advantages:
- organically stimulates researchers to create an ORCID
- Allows for two-way pushback
