Frictional Properties
Defination
Friction is the force that resists the movement
of a surface over another surface during sliding.
When fibres are processed in textile industry,
friction is developed between them. Due to the
friction, the properties shown by textile fibres
are called as frictional properties.
Factors affecting the frictional intensity of
textile materials:
•Composition of the material (natural/synthetic)
•The state of the surface (slippery/rough surface)
• Pressure between two surfaces
•Area of contact or angle of contact
•Speed of sliding of one surface over another
•Water absorption of fibre
•Temperature
Laws of friction:
•The frictional force is independent of the area of
contact between two surfaces.
•The frictional force `F’ is proportional to the
normal reaction N. So, the Co-efficient of friction
comes- µ= F/N
•This law is known as Coulomb’s law and
friction’s 3rd law. Kinetic force is independent of
the speed of sliding.
Amonton’s law of friction:
Friction is the force that holds together the fibres
in a spun yarn and the interlacing threads in a
fabric. When a yarn passes round a guide as
shown in the figure. Its tension must be increased
by an amount necessary to overcome the
frictional resistance.
If Amonton’s law is applied, we get the
following relation-
T2/T1=
Here T1= Incoming tension, T2= Outgoing
tension, µ=Co-efficient of friction,
θ=Angle of contact, e=2.718(Constant).
Co-efficient of friction:
Frictional intensity of textile fibres can be determined by
measuring co-efficient of friction. According to the 2nd law of
friction, frictional force is proportional to the perpendicular force
of a material due to it’s own weight.
So, F∞ N; where F= Frictional force & N= Normal or
perpendicular force
Or, F= µ N
Or, µ= F/N
Here, µ is the proportionate constant known as co-efficient of
friction. Thus, co-efficient of friction can also be defined as the ratio
between frictional force and perpendicular force of a material.
Measurement of co-efficient of friction:
Capstan method is very popular and commonly used to
determine the co-efficient of friction. Two methods are
involved:-
•Static Capstan method
•Dynamic Capstan method.
•Static capstan Method:
Capstan method is more convenient for the rapid
technical evaluation of frictional resistance. The co-
efficient of friction assumed to be constant, can be
calculated from the relation,
T2/T1=
, here a loop of yarn is placed over the guide and two
equal weights are placed on both sides. if we decrease weight
from one side gradually, one time the yarn will begin to pass.
2. Dynamic Capstan method:
When a yarn is running continuously over a guide, then
this method is suitable and most commonly used. Here, the
tension is measured by tension meter which measure
electrically with resistance, capacitance or inductance.
Reducing of weight is not necessary here.
Now, by Amonton’s law,
Types of frictions in fibre:
•Inter fibre friction.
•Fibre-Non fibre friction.
Importance of friction in Textile Industry:
•Friction holds the fibre in a sliver and hence material does
not break due to self weight.
•Friction helps in drafting and drawing process.
•Uniform tension can be maintained in winding and
warping because of friction.
•Friction helps in twisting during spinning.
•Friction modifies the lustre and appearance of a cloth
•Friction makes more clean yarn.
Problems of friction in Textile Industry:
•Friction causes neps formation.
•Over friction causes high breakage of yarn in weaving.
•Due to friction handle properties of fabric will be changed.
•Sometimes, due to friction textile materials may be elongated.
•Friction causes yarn and fabric hairiness.
•Friction causes static charge formation in textile material and
therefore, dust, dirt etc. are attracted by the textile material and
it becomes dirty.
•Friction worns out different parts of a machine.
Minimization of frictional intensity of textile materials:
Frictional Intensity can be minimized by-
1. By processing with lubricates:
Lubricating material as emulsion is used before jute spinning. Sizing is
done during weaving preparation process. It also reduces yarn damage.
Emulsion, oil, lubricants are applied specially on Jute fibre to reduce
friction.
2. By chemical treatment:
By using acid or alkali. Acid or alkali is done on wool fibre to reduce
scale sharpness and thus frictional intensity.
3. By finishing process:
a. Mechanical finishing- Ironing or calendaring.
b. Chemical finishing: By using resin. Resin is one typed anti-crease
agent because it prevents fibre from creasing by blocking hydroxyl
groups.
•By using softener we can minimize frictional intensity.

Frictional Properties.pptx

  • 2. Defination Friction is the force that resists the movement of a surface over another surface during sliding. When fibres are processed in textile industry, friction is developed between them. Due to the friction, the properties shown by textile fibres are called as frictional properties.
  • 3. Factors affecting the frictional intensity of textile materials: •Composition of the material (natural/synthetic) •The state of the surface (slippery/rough surface) • Pressure between two surfaces •Area of contact or angle of contact •Speed of sliding of one surface over another •Water absorption of fibre •Temperature
  • 4. Laws of friction: •The frictional force is independent of the area of contact between two surfaces. •The frictional force `F’ is proportional to the normal reaction N. So, the Co-efficient of friction comes- µ= F/N •This law is known as Coulomb’s law and friction’s 3rd law. Kinetic force is independent of the speed of sliding.
  • 5. Amonton’s law of friction: Friction is the force that holds together the fibres in a spun yarn and the interlacing threads in a fabric. When a yarn passes round a guide as shown in the figure. Its tension must be increased by an amount necessary to overcome the frictional resistance. If Amonton’s law is applied, we get the following relation- T2/T1= Here T1= Incoming tension, T2= Outgoing tension, µ=Co-efficient of friction, θ=Angle of contact, e=2.718(Constant).
  • 6. Co-efficient of friction: Frictional intensity of textile fibres can be determined by measuring co-efficient of friction. According to the 2nd law of friction, frictional force is proportional to the perpendicular force of a material due to it’s own weight. So, F∞ N; where F= Frictional force & N= Normal or perpendicular force Or, F= µ N Or, µ= F/N Here, µ is the proportionate constant known as co-efficient of friction. Thus, co-efficient of friction can also be defined as the ratio between frictional force and perpendicular force of a material.
  • 7. Measurement of co-efficient of friction: Capstan method is very popular and commonly used to determine the co-efficient of friction. Two methods are involved:- •Static Capstan method •Dynamic Capstan method. •Static capstan Method: Capstan method is more convenient for the rapid technical evaluation of frictional resistance. The co- efficient of friction assumed to be constant, can be calculated from the relation,
  • 8. T2/T1= , here a loop of yarn is placed over the guide and two equal weights are placed on both sides. if we decrease weight from one side gradually, one time the yarn will begin to pass.
  • 9. 2. Dynamic Capstan method: When a yarn is running continuously over a guide, then this method is suitable and most commonly used. Here, the tension is measured by tension meter which measure electrically with resistance, capacitance or inductance. Reducing of weight is not necessary here. Now, by Amonton’s law,
  • 10. Types of frictions in fibre: •Inter fibre friction. •Fibre-Non fibre friction. Importance of friction in Textile Industry: •Friction holds the fibre in a sliver and hence material does not break due to self weight. •Friction helps in drafting and drawing process. •Uniform tension can be maintained in winding and warping because of friction. •Friction helps in twisting during spinning. •Friction modifies the lustre and appearance of a cloth •Friction makes more clean yarn.
  • 11. Problems of friction in Textile Industry: •Friction causes neps formation. •Over friction causes high breakage of yarn in weaving. •Due to friction handle properties of fabric will be changed. •Sometimes, due to friction textile materials may be elongated. •Friction causes yarn and fabric hairiness. •Friction causes static charge formation in textile material and therefore, dust, dirt etc. are attracted by the textile material and it becomes dirty. •Friction worns out different parts of a machine.
  • 12. Minimization of frictional intensity of textile materials: Frictional Intensity can be minimized by- 1. By processing with lubricates: Lubricating material as emulsion is used before jute spinning. Sizing is done during weaving preparation process. It also reduces yarn damage. Emulsion, oil, lubricants are applied specially on Jute fibre to reduce friction. 2. By chemical treatment: By using acid or alkali. Acid or alkali is done on wool fibre to reduce scale sharpness and thus frictional intensity. 3. By finishing process: a. Mechanical finishing- Ironing or calendaring. b. Chemical finishing: By using resin. Resin is one typed anti-crease agent because it prevents fibre from creasing by blocking hydroxyl groups. •By using softener we can minimize frictional intensity.
