Napoleon rose to power after victories against the British at Toulon which led to promotions within the French military. In 1799, he launched the Coup of 18 Brumaire which overthrew the Directory and established the French Consulate with Napoleon as the first Consul, greatly increasing his political power. By 1804, Napoleon further consolidated his rule by crowning himself Emperor of France.
