What is Open Science
8
It is more than the
availability of data

to society.
It is the openness of
the scientific
process, reinforcing
scientific social
responsibility.

● important for developing countries, where many
students may not be able to afford textbooks,
where access to classrooms may be limited, and
where teacher-training programs may be lacking;
● important in wealthy industrialized countries,
where they can offer significant cost savings.
Ana Loureiro | 26’apr.19
ana.loureiro@ese.ipsantarem.pt
Why should I care about OERs?
18
19. ● Cost Savings
● Pedagogical Benefits
○ since open materials are fully revisable and remixable, they can be customized to fit the
way an instructor wants to teach a course
○ anyone, including students, can be involved in the creation, revision, and distribution of OER
● Knowledge Creation and Dissemination
Ana Loureiro | 26’apr.19
ana.loureiro@ese.ipsantarem.pt
Why are OER important?
19
20. ● Not available or difficult to find
● Perception of quality
● Traditional textbook package
● Institutional culture
● Not an individual decision
