Smoking is an addiction caused by nicotine in tobacco that produces illnesses harmful to health, such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and issues during pregnancy. It not only harms smokers but also passive smokers who breathe the same air. The World Health Organization states tobacco is the leading cause of disability and premature death worldwide, and the US Department of Health classified nicotine as addictive in 1988, as cigarettes and tobacco create dependence through mechanisms similar to cocaine and heroin addiction.
