In all my schooling years from standard one to form six in the
1950s and 1960s, as far as I could remember there wasn’t any
serious case of discipline problems. Of course, there were
some minor breaches of discipline like coming to school
late, forgetting to wear the school badge, passing up
homework late, talking during lessons, forgetting to bring
required books, quarreling and at worst a few not so serious
cases of fighting. Today things have changed drastically.
We hear of big discipline cases in school like bullying,
extortion, drug abuse, pornography, aggression and violence
and so on.
I could recall that from the 1990s onwards there had been an
increasing number of discipline problems among my students
and also those of my teacher friends. I shall write about some
of the difficult ones, the defiant ones using fictitious names to
protect their identity.

I once had an Indian student in my remove class who posed a
great challenge to me in my teaching. Chandran was not only
talkative in class but he also was creating a lot of disturbance
to others. He would walk around the lab, disturbing others
and playing with some lab apparatus. I tried to counsel him
but it did not work. A few times I called him to the front and
caned him on his outstretched hand. But each time after one
or two strokes of the cane, he would stretch out his hand
again and say, “Cikgu, lagi, lagi!” (“Sir, more, more!”). I
gave up using the cane. I decided to probe Chandran’s
family background. He came from the estate and there were
nine children with both his parents struggling to eke out a
living. I realized that the root of the problem was that
Chandran was crying out for attention, care and love which he
lacked at home.
我的班上曾经有一位印度学生,他给我的教学带来了很大

I changed my strategy of dealing with him in class. I spoke to
him, gave him more attention, made him an assistant monitor in
my class with specific duties and responsibilities. I would
praise him and reward him for his good work and good
example to others. From that day on, I had no problem with
Chandran.
Mr. Ang was a good teacher friend of mine. He was a most
dedicated and conscientious teacher. He was strict and took
steps to check any breach of discipline among his students.
One thing he viewed seriously was any cheating in
examinations. On one occasion he caught right under his
nose two students cheating in an examination in his Form 4
class. He immediately gave the culprits zero mark for their
paper. A few days later, Mr. Ang had his house gate locked up
and some paint splashed on to his house porch area.
我改变了在课堂上对付他的策略。 我和他交谈,给予他更

The night before, fire crackers were thrown into his house
compound causing a terrible fright to his baby. Of course,
suspicion fell upon the 2 culprits he had punished. A police
report was made but I cannot remember the final outcome.
It is unbelievable that illicit sex can happen among students
right in a school classroom. One of my friends teaching in a
neighboring school told me of one such case. Two of her
Form 5 students in her co-ed school were caught having
sex in a classroom one Sunday afternoon. There was a
tip off by someone to the headmaster who immediately
went to the school to investigate. He must have got the
shock of his life at what he saw. Disciplinary action was
taken. I am not sure whether the students were expelled or
one of them transferred out to another school subsequently.
前一天晚上,有人将鞭炮扔进他的家中,把他的孩子吓
坏了。 当然,嫌疑人落在了他所惩罚的两名罪犯身上。

For many years I used to be the supervisor for the MCE and HSC
external Cambridge practical examinations in Chemistry. I was
very particular and careful when it came to matters like
preparation, set-up of the lab places, safety and security in order to
maintain the integrity of the examination. Prior to the day of the
examination, I would ensure that all windows and doors were
properly closed and locked up, all open wire mashing areas
covered up and so on. The whole surrounding area of the labs
was made out of bounds to students and unauthorized
persons. Despite all the security measures taken, there was
one year when the chemistry lab was nearly broken into. I had
already prepared all the things and set up the places on the lab
benches. I ensured that no student could have a prior look at the
apparatus and chemicals to be used for the examination the
following morning.
多年来,我一直担任 MCE 和 HSC 外部剑桥化学实践考

The night before the exam, some ‘desperate’ and dishonest
ones cut the wire meshing above the windows and made holes
through the black cloth in an attempt to get into the lab or
have a peep inside. They ran off when the school security
guards saw them and shouted. Unfortunately, they were not
caught. The next morning, when I learnt about this
despicable act, I lodged a report with the authorities. I did not
think the culprits could see the inside of the lab in the
darkness of the night.
考试前一天晚上,一些“绝望”和不诚实的人剪断了窗户上

I first knew Kwai Giat when he was 5 years old and attending
our pre-school community class at our Buddhist Association. I
used to go in the morning (I had by then gone on optional
retirement) to the Association to help in some administrative
matters and do some cleaning and housekeeping work.
我第一次认识 Kwai Giat 是在他 5 岁的时候,当时他正
在我们佛教协会参加学前社区课程。 我过去常常早上去

Whenever I met Kwai Giat at the Association he would
sometimes pinch me in the stomach or give me one of the
martial arts’ kicks left and right. He would also do this to other
people. Over the years Kwai Giat was associated with us
through the community classes and camps, he proved to be a
difficult student to handle. He was restless, easily bored, lacked
motivation and would from time to time, breach class rules and
regulations. On one occasion Kwai Giat even broke his leg
through fooling around with other boys and trying ‘martial
arts’ tricks. However, I never gave up on him. I kept on
advising and counseling him and this paid off eventually.
Today Kwai Giat is a more matured and sober young man and
I believe he would be successful in his career.
每当我在协会遇到桂吉时,他有时会捏我的肚子,或者左
右踢我一脚。 他也会对其他人这样做。 多年来, Kwai

One of the most difficult cases I have ever encountered in my
teaching career involved a student whom I shall call Kwee
Kia. He was in Secondary 2 when he was sent by his parents
to our community motivation and self-development class
in our Association. Right from the beginning, Kwee Kia
behaved in a most unruly and gangster-like manner. He was
rude, used foul language, noisy in class and caused chaos in
the class by disturbing others. My lessons were disrupted by
Kwee Kia; he had no interest or motivation to learn at all.
Many teachers who also had similar problems with him had
counseled him but to no avail. I too on my part failed in the
counseling sessions. Sometimes a teacher has to ignore a
problematic student for the sake of teaching the others keen
to learn. For me this did not work because Kwee Kia refused
to remain quiet; he would move around the class trying to
disrupt the lessons.
我在教学生涯中遇到的最困难的案例之一涉及一位我称
之为 Kwee Kia 的学生。 当他读中二时,他的父母将他
送到我们协会的社区激励和自我发展课程。 从一开
始, Kwee Kia 就表现得非常不守规矩,像流氓一样。

I remember one occasion when I lost my cool…I had not lost
my temper for the last 30 years of teaching. That morning as
usual, before starting the lesson in my community class, I
started to lead the class in the usual Buddhist prayers done at
our Buddhist Association. The students were children of the
Association members. Before I began, I reminded the class to
be respectful. If any student did not wish to pray I told them
that it was alright. I did not believe in force. He or she just had
to remain silent while the prayer session was on. I turned to
face the shrine, with my back facing the students. I had hardly
recited the prayers for 5 minutes when I heard the disturbing
noise from Kwee Kia. He was speaking loudly to a girl
standing a distance away. The disturbance was unbelievable.
我记得有一次我失去了冷静……在过去 30 年的教学生涯
中,我没有发过脾气。 那天早上,像往常一样,在社区课
程开始上课之前,我开始带领全班同学进行我们佛教协会
通常进行的佛教祈祷。 这些学生都是协会成员的孩子。

For the first time ever, I stopped in the midst of the prayers and
turned to face Kwee Kia. I explained clearly to him the
disrespectful wrong he had committed and asked him not to
repeat this offence. I then resumed with the prayers, this time
facing the class so that I could keep an eye on Kwee Kia. To
my shock, Kwee Kia did not heed my advice. He continued
with his unruly behavior and talking. This was when I lost my
temper. I stopped the prayer again and asked Kwee Kia to
come in front. He answered rudely in Chinese, “I will not”
and he continued sitting in his place in a most unbecoming
way. The class was shocked when I shouted at Kwee Kia in
the loudest voice one could imagine. I demanded that he got
up to come in front. I think Kwee Kia was for once shocked
at my reaction. Quietly he came forward and sat on the chair
near the teacher’s desk.
我有史以来第一次在祈祷中停下来, 转身面对 Kwee
Kia 。 我向他清楚地解释了他所犯下的不尊重的错误,并
要求他不要再犯同样的罪行。 然后我继续祈祷,这次面

After finishing the prayer, I conducted the lesson with Kwee Kia
isolated from the rest.
Teaching Kwee Kia’s class that year was really trying. Even talking
with
his parents had no effect. Well, I had to do the best I could. A difficult
and defiant student posed a tremendous challenge to the teachers. The
following year Kwee Kia dropped out of the community class. Many
teachers heaved a great sigh of relief. Not many can be miracle
workers. I have since then lost touch with Kwee Kia.
Reflections
*In life we meet with ‘saints’ and we meet with ‘devils’. Being a
teacher can be most challenging.
* Being caring, patient, compassionate and understanding the true
nature of things will help one greatly in any social work or reaching out
to people with problems.
*Having great expectations or thinking that success will come
always is a wrong view or attitude. One needs just to do the best one
can and accept with wisdom any failure that will sometimes come upon
us.
* Remember: “Winners never quit; quitters never win.”
祈祷结束后,我和 Kwee Kia 一起上课,与其他人隔离。

place. With a strong, tranquil, wise mind, all problems
you can face.
Inevitable things, wise ones peacefully embrace.
This will happen to you, if Dhamma teachings you
chase.
The time spent learning the good Dhamma is not

The foolish ones crave, cling, grasp and so strongly lust.
Soon they’ll suffer much, this for sure one can forecast.
It means nothing, your possessions, status, or class.
Even your body, into dust it will be cast.
When your WISDOM SEES that nothing can truly last,
you’d strive to gain qualities that remain steadfast.
‘What is it that’ll go on, not lost or away pass?’
It is your Kamma and the Dhamma unsurpassed.”

Success is mostly a mental attitude. It
calls for
love, excitement, optimism, confidence, humbleness, poise,
faith, courage, cheerfulness, imagination, initiative,
tolerance, honesty, self-control and enthusiasm.
My Reflection
In our life the greatest success is when we make Dhamma our
quest and when we walk the Middle Way to SEE Nibbana's Endless
Day.

Our body is subjected to age, sickness, decay and ultimately
death. This fact of impermanence many do not see or realize.
They spend so much time, money and energy ‘pampering’ the
body at eating places, beauty salons, physical fitness centers,
entertainment outlets, shopping complexes and so on. I do not
mean to imply that we should not take care of the body – we
must of course look after our physical health, but the point is
that many seem to go beyond the limit and are not spending
enough time to develop the mind, something that will follow
us upon death.
We find many people who are in a way ‘obsessed’ with
multiplying their material possessions and wealth and chasing
for power and status. Little do they realize that all these things
are truly transient – they will be separated from their ‘owners’
at any time with no bargaining option.
我们的身体会遭受衰老、疾病、腐烂并最终死亡。 许多
人没有看到或意识到这个无常的事实。 他们花费大量的
时间、金钱和精力去餐饮场所、美容院、健身中心、娱
乐场所、购物中心等“呵护”身体。 我并不是说我们不应该

Transient 无常

The wise realize that more important than all these things are
our true wealth and inheritance – our Kamma and Dhamma.
These follow us from life to life until we are enlightened.
The greater our attachment to our family, relatives and friends,
the greater the dukkha (suffering, pain) we will experience
when the time comes for us to leave everything behind. The
first two verses of the Metta Sutta (Discourse on Loving-
Kindness) have important points for reflection:
He who is skilled in good, and wishes to attain that state of
Peace, should act thus: he should be able, upright, perfectly
upright, amenable to corrections, gentle and humble.
He should be contented, easy to support, not busy, simple in
livelihood, with senses controlled, discreet, not impudent, and
not greedily attached to families.
智者认识到,比所有这些事情更重要的是我们真正的财富
和遗产——我们的业和法。 它们一生一世地跟随我
们,直到我们开悟。
我们对家人、亲戚和朋友的依恋越深,当我们把一切抛在
脑后的时候,我们所经历的苦( dukkha )就会越大。

I remember a Dhamma friend who was a little perturbed by the
words ‘not greedily attached to families’ during our reading of
the English translation after chanting the Metta Sutta. He
asked, “Isn’t it natural that we should love and be attached
to our family? Wouldn’t one be highly irresponsible not to
take care of the family?” I think this friend failed to see the
suffering that will come when there is ‘greedy attachment.’
Of course, one loves the family – but it should be love that is
unconditional, love that has understanding and wisdom. Such
a person takes care of the family with responsibility but at the
same time he still gives time and puts in effort to practice the
Dhamma and develop his mind spiritually for he knows that
ultimately only this will count.
There is a good Dhammapada story with points for reflection
on the foolishness and danger of attachment to possessions and
people.
我记得一位法友在念诵《慈经》后阅读英文译本时,对“不
贪恋家庭”这句话感到有点不安。 他问道:“我们应该爱护我
们的家人,这不是很自然的事吗? 不照顾家庭不是一种极不
负责任的行为吗?” 我想这位朋友没有看到“贪爱”所带来的痛
苦。当然,一个人爱家庭,但应该是无条件的爱,有理解和
智慧的爱。 这样的人以责任照顾家庭,但同时他仍然投入时

Village of Beggars
It is the story of Ananda, The Rich Man (Verse 62 of Dhammapada):
While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse
(62) of this book, with reference to a miserly rich man, named
Ananda. There was once a very wealthy man named Ananda in
Savatthi. Although he possessed eighty crores, he was very
reluctant to give anything in charity. To his son, Mulasiri, he used to
say, "Don't think the wealth we have now is very much. Do not give
away anything from what you have, for you must make it grow.
Otherwise, your wealth will dwindle away."
This rich man had five pots of gold buried in his house and he died
without revealing their location to his son.
Ananda, the rich man, was reborn in a village of beggars, not far
from Savatthi. From the time his mother was pregnant, the income
of the beggars decreased; the villagers thought there must be a
wicked and unlucky one amongst them.
这是财主阿难的故事(第 62 节):
佛陀住在只园寺时,说了此书的偈( 62 ),提到一位名叫阿难
的吝啬富翁。
从前,舍卫城有一位非常富有的人,名叫阿难。 尽管他拥有八亿
卢比,但他却非常不愿意捐出任何东西用于慈善事业。 他常常对
他的儿子穆拉西里说:“不要认为我们现在拥有的财富很多。不要
放弃你所拥有的任何东西,因为你必须让它增长。否则,你的财

By dividing themselves up into groups and by the process of
elimination, they came to the conclusion that the pregnant beggar
woman must be the unfortunate one. Thus, she was driven out of
the village. When her son was born, the son proved to be extremely
ugly and repulsive. If she went out begging by herself, she would
get as before, but if she went out with her son, she would get
nothing. So, when the boy could go out by himself, his mother
placed a small plate in his hand and left him. As he wandered
about in Savatthi, he remembered his old house and his past
existence. So, he went into the house. When the sons of his son
Mulasiri saw him, they were frightened by his ugly looks and
began to cry. The servants then beat him and threw him out of the
house.
The Buddha who was on his alms-round, saw the incident and
asked the Venerable Ananda to fetch Mulasiri.
通过分组和淘汰的过程,他们得出结论:怀孕的乞丐一定是

When Mulasiri came, the Buddha told him that the young
beggar was his own father in his previous existence. But
Mulasiri could not believe it. So, the Buddha directed the
beggar boy to show where he had buried his five pots of gold.
Then only, Mulasiri accepted the truth and from that time he
became a devoted lay disciple of the Buddha.
Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:
"I have sons, I have wealth"; with this (feeling of
attachment) the fool is afflicted.
Indeed, he himself is not his own, how can sons and wealth
be his? (Verse 62)
当穆拉西里到来时,佛陀告诉他,这个年轻的乞丐是他
前世的亲生父亲。 但穆拉西里无法相信。 于是,佛陀指
示乞丐把他的五罐金子埋在哪里。 直到那时,穆拉西里
接受了真理,从那时起他就成为了佛陀的虔诚在家弟

Some years ago, there was a very good story circulated over
the Internet. It contained very good Dhamma points for
reflection. It was the story of The Four Wives:
几年前,网络上流传着一个非常精彩的故事。 它包含了

There was a rich merchant who had four wives. He loved the 4th
wife the most. He adorned her with rich robes and treated her to
delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the
best.
He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He was very proud of her
and always wanted to show her off to his many friends.
However, the merchant was always in great fear that she might
run
away with some other men.
He too, loved his 2nd wife. She was a very considerate person,
always patient and in fact was the merchant's confidante.
Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to
his 2nd wife, and she would always help him out and tide him
through difficult times.
Now, the merchant's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had
made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business
as well as taking care of the household.
从前有一个富商,他有四个妻子。 他最爱的是第四任妻子。 他给
她穿上华丽的衣袍,并用美味佳肴招待她。 他无微不至地照顾
她,给了她最好的一切。
他也非常爱第三任妻子。 他为她感到非常自豪,总是想向他的许

However, the merchant did not love the first wife and
although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he
was
going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life, and he
thought to himself, “Now, I have 4 wives with me, but when I
die, I’ll be alone. How lonely I’ll be.” Thus, he asked the 4th
wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing
and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will
you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the
4th wife and she walked away without another word. The
answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart.
The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you
so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow
me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life
is so
good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!"
然而,商人并不爱第一任妻子,尽管她深爱着他,但他却很
少注意到她。有一天,商人病倒了。 不久之后,他就知道自
己快要死了。 他想起自己奢华的生活,心想:“现在,我身边

The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.
He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help
and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help
again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me
company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied
the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your
grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the
merchant was devastated. Then a voice called out: "I'll leave
with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." The
merchant looked up and there was his 1st wife. She was so
skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly
grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much
better care of you while I could have!"
商人的心一沉,变冷了。
然后他问第二个妻子:“我一直向你求助,你也一直帮
助我。现在我又需要你的帮助。当我死的时候,你会跟
随我,陪伴我吗?” “抱歉,这次我帮不了你了!” 第二位

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives…
The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we
lavish in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd
wife is our possessions, status and wealth.
When we die, they all go to others.
The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close
they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can
stay by us is up to the grave.
The 1st
wife – It is something intangible, something you can’t see
- our mind.
The 1st
wife is often neglected in our pursuit of material wealth
and sensual pleasure. It is actually the only thing that follows us
wherever we go.
Perhaps it is a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather
than to wait until we’re on our deathbed when it is too late; we
will then regret, cry and lament.
事实上,我们一生中都有 4 个妻子……
第四个妻子是我们的身体。 无论我们花费多少时间和精力让它看
起来漂亮,当我们死时它都会离开我们。
我们的第三任妻子是我们的财产、地位和财富。
当我们死后,它们都会归于他人。
第二任妻子是我们的家人和朋友。 无论我们活着的时候他们离我
们有多近,他们能陪伴我们最远的距离就是到坟墓为止。

splendidly adorned, decay.
Alas the body too decays.
But the Dhamma of the good
does not age.”

In a high-tech society like ours today, a large proportion of
people, both the young and not so young use Emails,
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogger, WordPress, WhatsApp
and many other networking sites.
As I do a lot of postings, mostly educational and Dhamma
material, on various websites and some social media platforms,
I maintain a few Emails, am on Facebook and WhatsApp
mainly for communication and feedback purposes. I receive a
lot of forwarded emails, messages, tags, links and sharing on
Facebook and WhatsApp. The volume can be tremendous. On
Facebook, I have more than 2000 ‘Friends’. I added them
upon request with the hope that a few may view some
of the Dhamma and educational things I post.

I remember a monk once, more than 20 years ago telling me that most
of the stuff posted on Facebook (and I should now add ‘YouTube’,
‘WhatsApp’ and ‘Tik Tok’) are ‘thrash’ and waste a lot of the users’
time. However, rather than complaining, why not ‘put’ some ‘precious
stones’ (the Dhamma) among the ‘rubbish’ that one finds on the
Facebook (WhatsApp, YouTube and Tik Tok). I thought that makes
sense. Since then, I have been posting educational and Dhamma
material on Facebook, my various Websites, WhatsApp and YouTube
on quite a regular basis for some years already.
Most of the forwarded Emails (and now also WhatsApp Messages) to
me and the things posted on my Facebook page pertain to
* personal photos (one just can’t find time to view so many)
* entertainment - links, video clips of singing, movies, sport
* sensational news * political issues
* business and the commercial world
* travel and tours
* fashion and food * gossip matters
我记得 20 多年前,一位和尚曾经告诉我, Facebook 上发布的
大部 分 内 容 ( 我现在应该添加“ YouTube” 、“ WhatsApp” 和

As one’s time is limited, I have to prioritize what I read, see or
do. To me what matters most is the Dhamma; I skim and scan
the lots of stuff in my emails, Facebook and WhatsApp. Now
and then I do come across some good and beneficial things that
can help the mind to grow in loving-kindness, compassion and
wisdom. I reflect on such posts and sometimes I do power
points and videos based on the material and then post them on
web sites and some social media platforms for easier and a
more appealing reading.
I reproduce here two pieces of very good and thought-
provoking stuff that I received through forwarded emails more
than 10 years ago:

Interview With the Buddha
I dreamt I had an interview with the Buddha.
"Come in," He said. "So, you would like to interview Me?"
"If You have the time," I said.
The Buddha smiled and said: "For Me, there is no time…
it doesn't exist. What questions do you have in mind to ask
Me?”
"What surprises You most about mankind?" I asked.
The Buddha answered: "That they get bored at being
children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be
children again.
That they lose their health to make money and then lose their
money to restore their health.
That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the
present, such that they live neither for the present nor the
future.
采访佛陀
我梦见我采访了佛陀。
“ 进来吧,”他说。“那么,你想采访我吗?” “如果

The Buddha's hands took mine and we were silent for a while
and then I asked ...
“As a Bodhisattva, what are some of life's lessons You want
humans to learn?”
The Buddha replied with a smile: "To learn that they cannot
make anyone love them.
What they can do is to let themselves be loved.
To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in
their lives, but the lessons in Truth they have in their lives…
To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.
All suffer and receive rewards individually on their own
merits, not as a group on a comparison basis!
他们活着就好像他们永远不会死一样,而他们死了就好像
他们从未活过一样……”
佛陀握住我的手,我们沉默了一会儿,然后我问……
“作为菩萨,您希望人类学习哪些人生功课?”
佛陀微笑着回答说:“要知道他们不能让任何人爱他们。他

To learn that a rich person is not the one who has the most,
but is one who needs the least…
To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound
wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to
heal them…
To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness…
To learn that there are persons who love them dearly…
but simply do not know how to express or show their
feelings… To learn that money can buy almost anything
thing but happiness…
To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it
totally differently…
To learn that a true friend is someone who knows everything
about them...and likes them anyway.
要知道富人并不是拥有最多的人,
但他是最不需要的人……
要知道只需要几秒钟就能在我们所爱的人身上留下深刻的伤
口,却需要很多年才能治愈……
通过实践宽恕来学会宽恕……

To learn that it is not always enough that they be forgiven by
others, but that they have to forgive themselves…
I sat there for a while enjoying the moment.
I thanked the great Bodhisattva for His time (which was
nonexistent) and for all the wisdom that He left here for me, for
my family and for my friends.
He replied, "Anytime. I'm available, if you'll pardon the
expression, 24 hours a day.
All you have to do is look for Me inside yourself.
That's where I live. I'll answer every time.
People will forget what you say. People will forget what you
do. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”

People in Heaven, People in Hell
“I have seen people in heaven, I have seen people in hell.”
The Buddha once made this statement. But how can this be
possible? Isn't heaven a place only for gods, angels and
radiant beings, and hell a place where tormented beings
dwell in constant torture of unimaginable magnitude?
Once, the lord of after-life summoned four people in order to
pass judgment on them and determine their future destiny
according to their individual deeds.
To the first guy, the lord said, "Your records are not bad,
but...... you'll be reborn as a human again for 30 years."
The first guy begged for a few years more, but the lord
refused.
To the second guy, the lord said, "You have been lazy all your
life....... you'll be reborn as a cow for 50 years!"
天堂里的人,地狱里的人
“ 我见过天堂里的人,也见过地狱里的人。”
佛陀曾经说过这样的说法。 但这怎么可能呢? 难道天堂不是只有
诸神、天使和光明众生居住的地方,而地狱不是一个受苦众生居
住在难以想象的持续折磨中的地方吗?
一次,来世之主召唤了四个人,对他们进行审判,并根据他们

会再次投生为人。”

The second guy became so upset that he broke down and
begged, "Please, please lord, I cannot take it. 50 years is too
long. I promise to be a hard-working cow, but please lessen
my sentence to 25 years."
"All right, all right," the lord said.
On hearing that, the first guy said, "Please, please lord, give
me the extra 25 years that the cow rejected."
"All right then," the lord agreed.
The lord then turned to the third guy and said, "You have
been unfaithful and irresponsible all your life...... you'll be
reborn as a dog for 20 years!"
The third guy broke down and said, "Please, please, I cannot
bear it; 20 years is too long. I'll be a great dog and I'll look
after my master's house faithfully but lessen my sentence to 10
years."
第二个人非常沮丧,他崩溃了,恳求道:“主啊,求求你,我受不

"All right, all right," the lord agreed.
The first guy again came forward and begged. "Please,
please lord, give me the extra 10 years from the dog to me."
The lord gave in again.
Turning to the fourth guy, the lord shook his head and said, "I
am sorry, you had been wicked all your life...... you'll be
reborn in hell for a million years!"
The fourth guy begged for forgiveness, but the lord refused.
But after much persistence, the lord finally decided to lessen
the sentence by a mere 10 years.
The first guy quickly begged, "Please, please lord, give me
that 10 years too."
"All right, all right, you greedy fellow!"
“ 好吧,好吧。”领主同意了。
为首的家伙再次上前哀求。 “求求你,主啊,请给我从狗
到我的额外十年。”
王爷再次屈服。
转向第四个人,领主摇了摇头,道:“对不起,你一生作
恶……你将在地狱中重生一百万年!”

Hence, the first guy was reborn as a man for 75 years instead
of 30. After taking birth as a human being, he had a
wonderful first 30 years. His life was full of vigor, joy and he
even got married. Then, he had lots of children and had to
spend the next 25 years working extremely hard every day to
put food on the table for his family and pay for his children's
education. His life was no different from that of a cow. His
children grew up and after finishing higher education, they all
got married and worked in faraway places. They were so busy
with work and their own families that they hardly returned
home to visit their poor lonely father.
Therefore, after 25 years of hard work and retiring at 55, the
man became so disillusioned and lonely. He looked after the
empty house with his ageing wife, each day longing for his
children to come home.
因此,第一个人投生为人是 75 年,而不是 30 年。投生为
人后,他度过了美好的前 30 年。 他的生活充满活力、欢

His next 10 years were no different from that of a dog. When he
was 65, he spent the remaining 10 years of his life angry and
sad. He was suffering from many painful diseases and none of his
children wanted to be near him. Life was hell to him, and he died in
sadness, anger and loneliness.
(Although this is a fictitious story, there are many good Dhamma
Lessons for reflection so that we can learn how to live meaningfully
and die joyfully.

Students talk among themselves and also complain to their
parents about teachers who do not live up to the good name of
their profession. Today we even read in the papers news of
teachers who are guilty of immoral conduct and criminal
action – teachers on drugs, those who have affairs with their
students, involve themselves in gambling and drinking,
commit assaults or homicide and so on. Such teachers tarnish
the image of the teaching profession.
Sometimes I wonder why it is difficult to come upon students
who do not go for any form of private tuition outside their
school hours. Are parents and students losing faith in our
school system as far as teaching-learning is concerned. Are
good teachers getting to be a rare commodity? Undoubtedly
there are still dedicated and competent teachers today but are
they decreasing in number?
学生们互相议论,并向家长抱怨老师不辜负他们职业的
良好声誉。 今天,我们甚至在报纸上看到教师有不道德

In the 1950s and 60s when I was a student, most of my
teachers were very responsible and dedicated ones, truly a
credit to their profession. During my teaching career in the
70s, 80s and early 90s, I found that the majority of my
colleagues in the schools I taught in carried out their duties in
quite professional ways. Of course, there were a few cases of
teachers who were a little ‘odd’ and had other teachers and
students asking ‘Why Like That One?’ I remember a few
such teachers.
Mr. Ho Hum Chye (not his real name) was teaching
Mathematics in one of the schools I used to teach in. In his
early thirties, Mr. Ho was thin, of medium height, bespectacled
and of average looks. To be honest, he was quite a
hardworking teacher who knew his Mathematics ‘stuff’
very well. Unfortunately, he had this terrible weakness:
‘an eye’ for pretty girls in any of his classes.
在 20 世纪 50 年代和 60 年代,当我还是一名学生

This favoritism and soft spot for pretty girl students earned him
quite a reputation. The boys in his class did not like him
because of his paying attention more to the girls. Quite often,
especially when it was time for the students to do their
exercises on their own in class, Mr. Ho would be near the desk
of the prettiest girl in the class giving her ‘personal coaching.’
After I left the school, I lost touch with Mr. Ho and heard no
news about him.
There were these two lady teachers in a rural school I once
taught in. Both were in their early forties and teaching the
same subject in the school. Somehow, they could not get along
with each other; in fact, they quarreled openly a couple of
times in the school compound. Unbecoming words were used
and rather shameful body language was displayed.

The other teachers and students of course noticed all this. I
heard that the things they quarreled about were rather petty,
born out of jealousy of each other. Sometimes I would hear
them ‘boasting’ about their families and their wealth. They
would also talk bad about each other. Things got from bad to
worse and one day the principal called both of them to his
office to try to sort matters out but he failed to make any
headway. Eventually one of the two teachers had to be
transferred to another school.
I once had a young trainee teacher taking over my Form 4
Chemistry classes for a period of 3 months. This lady teacher
whom I shall refer to as Miss Nora, was from one of the local
universities and was doing her practical teaching in my
school.
其他老师和学生当然也注意到了这一切。 听说他们吵架

Just in her early twenties, Miss Nora was what many would regard
as a ‘sweet young thing.’ She had a pleasant personality. She was
polite, friendly and quite hardworking I would say. Unfortunately,
her greatest weakness as a teacher was her lack of competence to
teach the subject. She was very poor in content and many a time,
she had to ask for my help to explain fundamental chemistry
concepts. I tried my best to offer whatever help I could. She was
appreciative.
In the course of her 3-month practical teaching, Miss Nora taught
wrong subject matter from time to time and had even set faulty
questions in tests and examinations that could not be answered.
She had to subsequently cancel those questions. (I learnt all about
this from the top students who approached me to clarify some of
their lessons.)
After Miss Nora left, I had to do some un-learning with the
students in my chemistry classes.

It is unbelievable that some teachers cannot just control their
classes at all and their classes are more like circuses. I had one
such colleague when I was teaching in the eighties. Mr. Suppa
(not his true name) was a 6-footer and his body size was quite
big (compared to mine!). An easy-going type of person, he
was sociable and quite friendly with everybody. I remember a
year when both of us were handling a few remove classes.
There were periods when my class was adjacent to his and I
really dreaded those periods because the noise coming from
his class was unbearable. I used to think to myself: ‘His class
is like a circus with the animals and audience members
roaring.’ I just could not understand how Mr. Suppa could
teach his lessons in such a situation. Many a time I would
hear his voice in an attempt to warn the students to quiet
down.
令人难以置信的是,有些老师根本无法控制自己的课

He would always say in a loud voice, “When I count 1, 2, 3…you’d
better be quiet or else…” Mr. Suppa would then start his counting
‘One…Two…Three …’ But his ‘1, 2, 3 ..’ would be repeated on and on
to no avail. The class just did not heed his warning. Mr. Suppa could
not control his class at all. And I, next door had to ‘suffer’.
It was quite a relief for me when the following year, Mr. Suppa did
not have teaching periods next to my class.
Reflection
To have respect from the students and to uphold the dignity of the teaching
profession, teachers must always
*be careful and mindful not to show any favoritism towards certain students.
They must be fair and non-discriminating.
*maintain an honorable code of conduct. Unbecoming ways of behavior must
be done away with.
*show competence in terms of methodology and subject matter. Otherwise, they
lose the respect from their students.
*be able to have good class control and management. Otherwise, no
effective teaching and learning can take place.

Many years ago, a bus load of our local Buddhist association
members, librarians and Dhamma students made a one-day trip to
the Mental Hospital in Tanjung Rambutan and some places in Ipoh.
We gathered at our Buddhist association premises at 6.00 a.m. It was
very good to note that the students (Form 1 to Lower 6) were very
punctual.
(You know, these days, punctuality is getting to be a rare virtue …
more and more people seem to be getting into the habit of arriving
late for things …. meetings, wedding dinners, functions etc.)
We had a short Buddha Puja.
(We try to make this a practice for all trips and excursions organized
by our association. I think this is good …we pay Homage and make
positive aspirations and also pray for Blessings of The Triple Gem.)
The bus left at 6.30 am and we stopped at Kampar for breakfast. The
students were quite well-disciplined … another happy point to note.
很多年前,一辆载满我们当地佛教协会成员、图书管理员和佛法
学生的巴士,前往丹戎红毛丹的精神病院和怡保的一些地方,进
行了为期一天的旅行。

(You know, at the present time, we hear so much about the
lack of discipline in schools …. defiance, rowdiness,
lack of manners, loose morals, gang fights, restlessness and
so on. It is my sincere conviction that some Dhamma
education for students right from the age of 4 or 5 would go
a long way to molding the character of a person.)
After breakfast, we continued our journey and reached
Tanjung Rambutan at about 9.00 a.m. The Hospital ground
area is very large, and we had to go by bus from one place to
the other. Two kind senior nursing Sisters were our guide.
What impressed me most was their dedication, kindness, and
compassion. One had already served for almost twenty
years …tending to and helping so many who are mentally ill.

(In a materialistic society today, it is not easy to find
"Bodhisattas” … it is a ‘rat race’, ‘dog eat dog ‘and ‘No
Money, No Talk’ world. Small surprise that it is very difficult
nowadays to get volunteer workers for Dhammaduta work.
Our association is no exception … we struggle to recruit
volunteers for Dhamma and outreach work …. teachers for
Dhamma classes, tutors for Guidance classes, helpers to cook
for Camps and other functions, counsellors, people to help
upkeep the premises, librarians, people to help at
Buddhist funeral services, people to run Welfare projects,
Camps and so on.)
At the Hospital Bahagia, we were briefed on many informative
things and taken to visit some centers where some inmates are
occupied in useful work such as workshop work for men,
handicraft work for women and gardening/farming. Such work
and tasks have very good therapeutic value.

We were also taken to some male and female wards. The patients
maintain the cleanliness pretty well under supervision by staff
members.
There were many things we learnt at the Hospital Bahagia which
are very good for Dhamma Reflection:
•More than 90 % of the patients are Schizophrenic
cases. Some are more serious; the majority are not aggressive or
violent.
They suffer from spells of depression and withdrawal especially
if
they skip their medication.
•Schizophrenia is incurable, and it afflicts about 1 % of
the human population. It is really a strange and bizarre mental
illness. (I have long wondered about the link between Kamma and
mental illnesses. I remember a prominent local monk once told
me that there is a correlation between mental illnesses and heavy
breaking of the first and fifth Precepts namely, the Precept not
to kill and the Precept to abstain from intoxicants.

I find this makes sense …. just think about the people who “drown”
their minds with intoxicants and the mental states of people who, with
cruelty, anguish, hatred, anger, ill-will and jealousy, torture and kill
others. Sometimes the terrible effects of intoxicants and drugs on
the minds already start to take shape pretty soon or in the later years
of their lives. I think it is very important for us to inculcate the virtues
of kindness and compassion and the need to keep our minds clear,
heedful, and mindful.)
•People have a lot of taboos and misconceptions about
mental illnesses. We don’t realize that we unenlightened ones, are all
afflicted with mental “diseases” in a way - the “diseases” of Greed,
Hatred and
Delusion. It’s really a matter of degree.
(You know, when I was away for this “Tanjung Rambutan” trip, two of
my friends came to see me at my home. When one of my brothers told
them that I was in Tanjung Rambutan, they were so shocked and said
things like “What happened to him?” “When did this happen?”)
我觉得这很有道理……想想那些用麻醉品“淹没”自己思想的人,
想想那些用残忍、痛苦、仇恨、愤怒、恶意和嫉妒折磨和杀害他

In Hospital Bahagia, we learnt that many of the inmates’ families
had already abandoned them. It’s really pitiful. Whom could they
turn to?
•The number of cases of mental illnesses is on the rise.
There is no doubt that STRESS is one precipitating factor. This
is the price we have to pay for so-called economic
progress, technological advancement and what-nots. The Sisters
told us that mental illnesses (schizophrenia, depression,
neuroticism, anxiety, manic obsession etc.) can affect just about
anyone …people of different race, culture, gender and
professions. At the Hospital, there were secondary and tertiary
students who scored many A’s. The years ahead are not going to
be easy ones in terms of mental health … and sanity.
(To my mind, Dhamma education and practice is our hope…and
salvation but it’s not easy to convince others. We feel they have
‘dust’ in their eyes but they think we are ‘Nuts’!)
在巴哈吉亚医院,我们得知许多病人的家人已经抛弃了他们。这
真是太可怜了。他们能向谁求助呢?
• 精神疾病病例数在上升。毫无疑问,压力是其中一个诱因。这

•It is always good to remind ourselves that
STRESS is related to one of the following:
1.We want to GET, ATTAIN, ACHIEVE,
ACQUIRE, BE ONE UP ON OTHERS.
2. We want to satisfy our EGO or SELF.
(In reality, there is no “self”.)
3. We are victims of “conditioning” ….
our upbringing, education, outside influences etc.
(We need to learn, understand, practice and realize the
Dhamma in order to “de-condition” the mind.)

All in all, we spent about three hours at the Mental
Hospital. The rest of the trip was spent visiting some
Buddhist caves in Ipoh, The Nalanda Buddhist Library, a
recreational park and Jaya Jusco Supermarket.
We arrived back in our association at about 10.00 p.m. It
was a good trip for me …in terms of Dhamma learning
and reflection.

    2 In all myschooling years from standard one to form six in the 1950s and 1960s, as far as I could remember there wasn’t any serious case of discipline problems. Of course, there were some minor breaches of discipline like coming to school late, forgetting to wear the school badge, passing up homework late, talking during lessons, forgetting to bring required books, quarreling and at worst a few not so serious cases of fighting. Today things have changed drastically. We hear of big discipline cases in school like bullying, extortion, drug abuse, pornography, aggression and violence and so on. I could recall that from the 1990s onwards there had been an increasing number of discipline problems among my students and also those of my teacher friends.     3 I once hadan Indian student in my remove class who posed a great challenge to me in my teaching. Chandran was not only talkative in class but he also was creating a lot of disturbance to others. He would walk around the lab, disturbing others and playing with some lab apparatus. I tried to counsel him but it did not work. A few times I called him to the front and caned him on his outstretched hand. But each time after one or two strokes of the cane, he would stretch out his hand again and say, “Cikgu, lagi, lagi!” (“Sir, more, more!”). I gave up using the cane. I decided to probe Chandran’s family background. He came from the estate and there were nine children with both his parents struggling to eke out a living.     4 I changed mystrategy of dealing with him in class. I spoke to him, gave him more attention, made him an assistant monitor in my class with specific duties and responsibilities. I would praise him and reward him for his good work and good example to others. From that day on, I had no problem with Chandran. Mr. Ang was a good teacher friend of mine. He was a most dedicated and conscientious teacher. He was strict and took steps to check any breach of discipline among his students. One thing he viewed seriously was any cheating in examinations. On one occasion he caught right under his nose two students cheating in an examination in his Form 4 class. He immediately gave the culprits zero mark for their paper.     5 The night before,fire crackers were thrown into his house compound causing a terrible fright to his baby. Of course, suspicion fell upon the 2 culprits he had punished. A police report was made but I cannot remember the final outcome. It is unbelievable that illicit sex can happen among students right in a school classroom. One of my friends teaching in a neighboring school told me of one such case. Two of her Form 5 students in her co-ed school were caught having sex in a classroom one Sunday afternoon. There was a tip off by someone to the headmaster who immediately went to the school to investigate. He must have got the shock of his life at what he saw. Disciplinary action was taken.     6 For many yearsI used to be the supervisor for the MCE and HSC external Cambridge practical examinations in Chemistry. I was very particular and careful when it came to matters like preparation, set-up of the lab places, safety and security in order to maintain the integrity of the examination. Prior to the day of the examination, I would ensure that all windows and doors were properly closed and locked up, all open wire mashing areas covered up and so on. The whole surrounding area of the labs was made out of bounds to students and unauthorized persons. Despite all the security measures taken, there was one year when the chemistry lab was nearly broken into. I had already prepared all the things and set up the places on the lab benches.     7 The night beforethe exam, some ‘desperate’ and dishonest ones cut the wire meshing above the windows and made holes through the black cloth in an attempt to get into the lab or have a peep inside. They ran off when the school security guards saw them and shouted. Unfortunately, they were not caught. The next morning, when I learnt about this despicable act, I lodged a report with the authorities.     8 Whenever I metKwai Giat at the Association he would sometimes pinch me in the stomach or give me one of the martial arts’ kicks left and right. He would also do this to other people. Over the years Kwai Giat was associated with us through the community classes and camps, he proved to be a difficult student to handle. He was restless, easily bored, lacked motivation and would from time to time, breach class rules and regulations. On one occasion Kwai Giat even broke his leg through fooling around with other boys and trying ‘martial arts’ tricks. However, I never gave up on him. I kept on advising and counseling him and this paid off eventually.     9 One of themost difficult cases I have ever encountered in my teaching career involved a student whom I shall call Kwee Kia. He was in Secondary 2 when he was sent by his parents to our community motivation and self-development class in our Association. Right from the beginning, Kwee Kia behaved in a most unruly and gangster-like manner. He was rude, used foul language, noisy in class and caused chaos in the class by disturbing others. My lessons were disrupted by Kwee Kia; he had no interest or motivation to learn at all. Many teachers who also had similar problems with him had counseled him but to no avail. I too on my part failed in the counseling sessions. Sometimes a teacher has to ignore a problematic student for the sake of teaching the others keen to learn.     10 I remember oneoccasion when I lost my cool…I had not lost my temper for the last 30 years of teaching. That morning as usual, before starting the lesson in my community class, I started to lead the class in the usual Buddhist prayers done at our Buddhist Association. The students were children of the Association members. Before I began, I reminded the class to be respectful. If any student did not wish to pray I told them that it was alright. I did not believe in force. He or she just had to remain silent while the prayer session was on. I turned to face the shrine, with my back facing the students. I had hardly recited the prayers for 5 minutes when I heard the disturbing noise from Kwee Kia. He was speaking loudly to a girl standing a distance away.     11 For the firsttime ever, I stopped in the midst of the prayers and turned to face Kwee Kia. I explained clearly to him the disrespectful wrong he had committed and asked him not to repeat this offence. I then resumed with the prayers, this time facing the class so that I could keep an eye on Kwee Kia. To my shock, Kwee Kia did not heed my advice. He continued with his unruly behavior and talking. This was when I lost my temper. I stopped the prayer again and asked Kwee Kia to come in front. He answered rudely in Chinese, “I will not” and he continued sitting in his place in a most unbecoming way. The class was shocked when I shouted at Kwee Kia in the loudest voice one could imagine. I demanded that he got up to come in front. I think Kwee Kia was for once shocked at my reaction.     12 After finishing theprayer, I conducted the lesson with Kwee Kia isolated from the rest. Teaching Kwee Kia’s class that year was really trying. Even talking with his parents had no effect. Well, I had to do the best I could. A difficult and defiant student posed a tremendous challenge to the teachers. The following year Kwee Kia dropped out of the community class. Many teachers heaved a great sigh of relief. Not many can be miracle workers. I have since then lost touch with Kwee Kia. Reflections *In life we meet with ‘saints’ and we meet with ‘devils’. Being a teacher can be most challenging. * Being caring, patient, compassionate and understanding the true nature of things will help one greatly in any social work or reaching out to people with problems. *Having great expectations or thinking that success will come always is a wrong view or attitude.     23 I would liketo pen my Dhamma thoughts on “Impermanence”. “Things arise and then die, at times slow at times fast. It is Nature, wise ones know it’s not theirs to ask. Knowing transiency, worldly things - do not amass. The foolish ones crave, cling, grasp and so strongly lust. Soon they’ll suffer much, this for sure one can forecast. It means nothing, your possessions, status, or class. Even your body, into dust it will be cast.     26 Our body issubjected to age, sickness, decay and ultimately death. This fact of impermanence many do not see or realize. They spend so much time, money and energy ‘pampering’ the body at eating places, beauty salons, physical fitness centers, entertainment outlets, shopping complexes and so on. I do not mean to imply that we should not take care of the body – we must of course look after our physical health, but the point is that many seem to go beyond the limit and are not spending enough time to develop the mind, something that will follow us upon death. We find many people who are in a way ‘obsessed’ with multiplying their material possessions and wealth and chasing for power and status.     27 The wise realizethat more important than all these things are our true wealth and inheritance – our Kamma and Dhamma. These follow us from life to life until we are enlightened. The greater our attachment to our family, relatives and friends, the greater the dukkha (suffering, pain) we will experience when the time comes for us to leave everything behind. The first two verses of the Metta Sutta (Discourse on Loving- Kindness) have important points for reflection: He who is skilled in good, and wishes to attain that state of Peace, should act thus: he should be able, upright, perfectly upright, amenable to corrections, gentle and humble.     28 I remember aDhamma friend who was a little perturbed by the words ‘not greedily attached to families’ during our reading of the English translation after chanting the Metta Sutta. He asked, “Isn’t it natural that we should love and be attached to our family? Wouldn’t one be highly irresponsible not to take care of the family?” I think this friend failed to see the suffering that will come when there is ‘greedy attachment.’ Of course, one loves the family – but it should be love that is unconditional, love that has understanding and wisdom. Such a person takes care of the family with responsibility but at the same time he still gives time and puts in effort to practice the Dhamma and develop his mind spiritually for he knows that ultimately only this will count.     29 Village of Beggars Itis the story of Ananda, The Rich Man (Verse 62 of Dhammapada): While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verse (62) of this book, with reference to a miserly rich man, named Ananda. There was once a very wealthy man named Ananda in Savatthi. Although he possessed eighty crores, he was very reluctant to give anything in charity. To his son, Mulasiri, he used to say, "Don't think the wealth we have now is very much. Do not give away anything from what you have, for you must make it grow. Otherwise, your wealth will dwindle away." This rich man had five pots of gold buried in his house and he died without revealing their location to his son. Ananda, the rich man, was reborn in a village of beggars, not far from Savatthi.     30 By dividing themselvesup into groups and by the process of elimination, they came to the conclusion that the pregnant beggar woman must be the unfortunate one. Thus, she was driven out of the village. When her son was born, the son proved to be extremely ugly and repulsive. If she went out begging by herself, she would get as before, but if she went out with her son, she would get nothing. So, when the boy could go out by himself, his mother placed a small plate in his hand and left him. As he wandered about in Savatthi, he remembered his old house and his past existence. So, he went into the house. When the sons of his son Mulasiri saw him, they were frightened by his ugly looks and began to cry. The servants then beat him and threw him out of the house.     31 When Mulasiri came,the Buddha told him that the young beggar was his own father in his previous existence. But Mulasiri could not believe it. So, the Buddha directed the beggar boy to show where he had buried his five pots of gold. Then only, Mulasiri accepted the truth and from that time he became a devoted lay disciple of the Buddha. Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows: "I have sons, I have wealth"; with this (feeling of attachment) the fool is afflicted. Indeed, he himself is not his own, how can sons and wealth be his?     32 There was arich merchant who had four wives. He loved the 4th wife the most. He adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He was very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his many friends. However, the merchant was always in great fear that she might run away with some other men. He too, loved his 2nd wife. She was a very considerate person, always patient and in fact was the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife, and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.     33 However, the merchantdid not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her. One day the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life, and he thought to himself, “Now, I have 4 wives with me, but when I die, I’ll be alone. How lonely I’ll be.” Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word. The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is so good over here!     34 The merchant's heartsank and turned cold. He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated. Then a voice called out: "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." The merchant looked up and there was his 1st wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition.     35 Actually, we allhave 4 wives in our lives… The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die. Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. The 1st wife – It is something intangible, something you can’t see - our mind. The 1st wife is often neglected in our pursuit of material wealth and sensual pleasure. It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go.     39 I remember amonk once, more than 20 years ago telling me that most of the stuff posted on Facebook (and I should now add ‘YouTube’, ‘WhatsApp’ and ‘Tik Tok’) are ‘thrash’ and waste a lot of the users’ time. However, rather than complaining, why not ‘put’ some ‘precious stones’ (the Dhamma) among the ‘rubbish’ that one finds on the Facebook (WhatsApp, YouTube and Tik Tok). I thought that makes sense. Since then, I have been posting educational and Dhamma material on Facebook, my various Websites, WhatsApp and YouTube on quite a regular basis for some years already.     40 As one’s timeis limited, I have to prioritize what I read, see or do. To me what matters most is the Dhamma; I skim and scan the lots of stuff in my emails, Facebook and WhatsApp. Now and then I do come across some good and beneficial things that can help the mind to grow in loving-kindness, compassion and wisdom. I reflect on such posts and sometimes I do power points and videos based on the material and then post them on web sites and some social media platforms for easier and a more appealing reading.     41 Interview With theBuddha I dreamt I had an interview with the Buddha. "Come in," He said. "So, you would like to interview Me?" "If You have the time," I said.     42 真理的教训 That they liveas if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived...” The Buddha's hands took mine and we were silent for a while and then I asked ... “As a Bodhisattva, what are some of life's lessons You want humans to learn?” The Buddha replied with a smile: "To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is to let themselves be loved. To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but the lessons in Truth they have in their lives… To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others.     44 To learn thatit is not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they have to forgive themselves… I sat there for a while enjoying the moment. I thanked the great Bodhisattva for His time (which was nonexistent) and for all the wisdom that He left here for me, for my family and for my friends. He replied, "Anytime. I'm available, if you'll pardon the expression, 24 hours a day. All you have to do is look for Me inside yourself. That's where I live. I'll answer every time. People will forget what you say. People will forget what you do.     45 People in Heaven,People in Hell “I have seen people in heaven, I have seen people in hell.” The Buddha once made this statement. But how can this be possible? Isn't heaven a place only for gods, angels and radiant beings, and hell a place where tormented beings dwell in constant torture of unimaginable magnitude? Once, the lord of after-life summoned four people in order to pass judgment on them and determine their future destiny according to their individual deeds. To the first guy, the lord said, "Your records are not bad, but...... you'll be reborn as a human again for 30 years." The first guy begged for a few years more, but the lord refused. To the second guy, the lord said, "You have been lazy all your life....... you'll be reborn as a cow for 50 years!" 天堂里的人,地狱里的人 “ 我见过天堂里的人,也见过地狱里的人。” 佛陀曾经说过这样的说法。 但这怎么可能呢? 难道天堂不是只有 诸神、天使和光明众生居住的地方,而地狱不是一个受苦众生居 住在难以想象的持续折磨中的地方吗? 一次,来世之主召唤了四个人,对他们进行审判,并根据他们 各自的行为决定他们未来的命运。 领主对第一个人说道:“你的记录还不错,但是……三十年后你 会再次投生为人。” 第一个人请求再多几年,但领主拒绝了。 老爷子对第二个人说:“你这辈子都懒了……五十年了,你会投 生为牛!”

    46 The second guybecame so upset that he broke down and begged, "Please, please lord, I cannot take it. 50 years is too long. I promise to be a hard-working cow, but please lessen my sentence to 25 years." "All right, all right," the lord said. On hearing that, the first guy said, "Please, please lord, give me the extra 25 years that the cow rejected." "All right then," the lord agreed. The lord then turned to the third guy and said, "You have been unfaithful and irresponsible all your life...... you'll be reborn as a dog for 20 years!" The third guy broke down and said, "Please, please, I cannot bear it; 20 years is too long.     47 "All right, allright," the lord agreed. The first guy again came forward and begged. "Please, please lord, give me the extra 10 years from the dog to me." The lord gave in again. Turning to the fourth guy, the lord shook his head and said, "I am sorry, you had been wicked all your life...... you'll be reborn in hell for a million years!" The fourth guy begged for forgiveness, but the lord refused. But after much persistence, the lord finally decided to lessen the sentence by a mere 10 years. The first guy quickly begged, "Please, please lord, give me that 10 years too."     48 Hence, the firstguy was reborn as a man for 75 years instead of 30. After taking birth as a human being, he had a wonderful first 30 years. His life was full of vigor, joy and he even got married. Then, he had lots of children and had to spend the next 25 years working extremely hard every day to put food on the table for his family and pay for his children's education. His life was no different from that of a cow. His children grew up and after finishing higher education, they all got married and worked in faraway places. They were so busy with work and their own families that they hardly returned home to visit their poor lonely father. Therefore, after 25 years of hard work and retiring at 55, the man became so disillusioned and lonely.     49 His next 10years were no different from that of a dog. When he was 65, he spent the remaining 10 years of his life angry and sad. He was suffering from many painful diseases and none of his children wanted to be near him. Life was hell to him, and he died in sadness, anger and loneliness. (Although this is a fictitious story, there are many good Dhamma Lessons for reflection so that we can learn how to live meaningfully and die joyfully.     51 Students talk amongthemselves and also complain to their parents about teachers who do not live up to the good name of their profession. Today we even read in the papers news of teachers who are guilty of immoral conduct and criminal action – teachers on drugs, those who have affairs with their students, involve themselves in gambling and drinking, commit assaults or homicide and so on. Such teachers tarnish the image of the teaching profession. Sometimes I wonder why it is difficult to come upon students who do not go for any form of private tuition outside their school hours. Are parents and students losing faith in our school system as far as teaching-learning is concerned. Are good teachers getting to be a rare commodity?     52 In the 1950sand 60s when I was a student, most of my teachers were very responsible and dedicated ones, truly a credit to their profession. During my teaching career in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, I found that the majority of my colleagues in the schools I taught in carried out their duties in quite professional ways. Of course, there were a few cases of teachers who were a little ‘odd’ and had other teachers and students asking ‘Why Like That One?’ I remember a few such teachers. Mr. Ho Hum Chye (not his real name) was teaching Mathematics in one of the schools I used to teach in. In his early thirties, Mr. Ho was thin, of medium height, bespectacled and of average looks. To be honest, he was quite a hardworking teacher who knew his Mathematics ‘stuff’ very well.     53 This favoritism andsoft spot for pretty girl students earned him quite a reputation. The boys in his class did not like him because of his paying attention more to the girls. Quite often, especially when it was time for the students to do their exercises on their own in class, Mr. Ho would be near the desk of the prettiest girl in the class giving her ‘personal coaching.’ After I left the school, I lost touch with Mr. Ho and heard no news about him. There were these two lady teachers in a rural school I once taught in. Both were in their early forties and teaching the same subject in the school. Somehow, they could not get along with each other; in fact, they quarreled openly a couple of times in the school compound.     54 The other teachersand students of course noticed all this. I heard that the things they quarreled about were rather petty, born out of jealousy of each other. Sometimes I would hear them ‘boasting’ about their families and their wealth. They would also talk bad about each other. Things got from bad to worse and one day the principal called both of them to his office to try to sort matters out but he failed to make any headway. Eventually one of the two teachers had to be transferred to another school. I once had a young trainee teacher taking over my Form 4 Chemistry classes for a period of 3 months.     55 Just in herearly twenties, Miss Nora was what many would regard as a ‘sweet young thing.’ She had a pleasant personality. She was polite, friendly and quite hardworking I would say. Unfortunately, her greatest weakness as a teacher was her lack of competence to teach the subject. She was very poor in content and many a time, she had to ask for my help to explain fundamental chemistry concepts. I tried my best to offer whatever help I could. She was appreciative. In the course of her 3-month practical teaching, Miss Nora taught wrong subject matter from time to time and had even set faulty questions in tests and examinations that could not be answered. She had to subsequently cancel those questions. (I learnt all about this from the top students who approached me to clarify some of their lessons.)     56 It is unbelievablethat some teachers cannot just control their classes at all and their classes are more like circuses. I had one such colleague when I was teaching in the eighties. Mr. Suppa (not his true name) was a 6-footer and his body size was quite big (compared to mine!). An easy-going type of person, he was sociable and quite friendly with everybody. I remember a year when both of us were handling a few remove classes. There were periods when my class was adjacent to his and I really dreaded those periods because the noise coming from his class was unbearable. I used to think to myself: ‘His class is like a circus with the animals and audience members roaring.’ I just could not understand how Mr. Suppa could teach his lessons in such a situation.     57 He would alwayssay in a loud voice, “When I count 1, 2, 3…you’d better be quiet or else…” Mr. Suppa would then start his counting ‘One…Two…Three …’ But his ‘1, 2, 3 ..’ would be repeated on and on to no avail. The class just did not heed his warning. Mr. Suppa could not control his class at all. And I, next door had to ‘suffer’. It was quite a relief for me when the following year, Mr. Suppa did not have teaching periods next to my class. Reflection To have respect from the students and to uphold the dignity of the teaching profession, teachers must always *be careful and mindful not to show any favoritism towards certain students. They must be fair and non-discriminating. *maintain an honorable code of conduct. Unbecoming ways of behavior must be done away with. *show competence in terms of methodology and subject matter. Otherwise, they lose the respect from their students. *be able to have good class control and management.     61 Many years ago,a bus load of our local Buddhist association members, librarians and Dhamma students made a one-day trip to the Mental Hospital in Tanjung Rambutan and some places in Ipoh. We gathered at our Buddhist association premises at 6.00 a.m. It was very good to note that the students (Form 1 to Lower 6) were very punctual. (You know, these days, punctuality is getting to be a rare virtue … more and more people seem to be getting into the habit of arriving late for things …. meetings, wedding dinners, functions etc.) We had a short Buddha Puja. (We try to make this a practice for all trips and excursions organized by our association. I think this is good …we pay Homage and make positive aspirations and also pray for Blessings of The Triple Gem.) The bus left at 6.30 am and we stopped at Kampar for breakfast. After breakfast, we continued our journey and reached Tanjung Rambutan at about 9.00 a.m. The Hospital ground area is very large, and we had to go by bus from one place to the other. Two kind senior nursing Sisters were our guide. What impressed me most was their dedication, kindness, and compassion. One had already served for almost twenty years …tending to and helping so many who are mentally ill. Small surprise that it is very difficult nowadays to get volunteer workers for Dhammaduta work. Our association is no exception … we struggle to recruit volunteers for Dhamma and outreach work …. teachers for Dhamma classes, tutors for Guidance classes, helpers to cook for Camps and other functions, counsellors, people to help upkeep the premises, librarians, people to help at Buddhist funeral services, people to run Welfare projects, Camps and so on.) At the Hospital Bahagia, we were briefed on many informative things and taken to visit some centers where some inmates are occupied in useful work such as workshop work for men, handicraft work for women and gardening/farming. Such work and tasks have very good therapeutic value.     64 We were alsotaken to some male and female wards. The patients maintain the cleanliness pretty well under supervision by staff members. There were many things we learnt at the Hospital Bahagia which are very good for Dhamma Reflection: •More than 90 % of the patients are Schizophrenic cases. Some are more serious; the majority are not aggressive or violent. They suffer from spells of depression and withdrawal especially if they skip their medication. •Schizophrenia is incurable, and it afflicts about 1 % of the human population. It is really a strange and bizarre mental illness. (I have long wondered about the link between Kamma and mental illnesses.     66 In Hospital Bahagia,we learnt that many of the inmates’ families had already abandoned them. It’s really pitiful. Whom could they turn to? •The number of cases of mental illnesses is on the rise. There is no doubt that STRESS is one precipitating factor. This is the price we have to pay for so-called economic progress, technological advancement and what-nots. The Sisters told us that mental illnesses (schizophrenia, depression, neuroticism, anxiety, manic obsession etc.) can affect just about anyone …people of different race, culture, gender and professions. At the Hospital, there were secondary and tertiary students who scored many A’s. The years ahead are not going to be easy ones in terms of mental health … and sanity. (To my mind, Dhamma education and practice is our hope…and salvation but it’s not easy to convince others.
