Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in 1818. He was sent to live with several different masters, some who were kind and some who were cruel. He taught himself to read and write, despite laws prohibiting slaves from being educated. Douglass escaped from slavery and became a prominent abolitionist, author, editor, and speaker. He published influential autobiographies about his life as a slave and his escape. Douglass dedicated his life to campaigning against slavery and fighting for equal rights.
