We are finally starting to think about how touchscreen devices really work, and design proper sized targets, think about touch as different from mouse selection, and to create common gesture libraries.
But despite this we still forget the user. Fingers and thumbs take up space, and cover the screen. Corners of screens have different accuracy than the center. It's time to re-evaluate what we think we know.
Steven reviews his ongoing research into how people actually interact with mobile devices, presents some new ideas on how we can design to avoid errors and take advantage of this new knowledge, and leaves you with 10 (relatively) simple steps to improve your touchscreen designs tomorrow.

The What If Technique presented by Motivate DesignMotivate Design
Why "What If"...?
The What If Technique tackles the challenge of engaging a creative, disruptive mindset when it comes to design thinking and crafting innovative user experiences.
Thinking disruptively is a disruptive thing to do, which means it's a very hard thing to do, especially when you add in risk-averse business leaders and company cultures, who hold on tight to psychological blocks, corporate lore, and excuse personas that stifle creativity and possibilities (see www.motivatedesign.com/what-if for more details).
The What If Technique offers key steps, tools and examples to help you achieve incremental changes that promote disruptive thinking, overcome barriers to creativity, and lead to big, innovative differences for business leaders, companies, and ultimately user experiences and products.

2. Frantziako Nicolas
Kaixo! Ni Nicolas naiz eta Frantzian bizi naiz, Arras
deituriko herri txiki batean. Nire gurasoak ni txikia nintzela
hil egin ziren. Ez naiz beraietaz ia oroitzen, urte bat bainuen
soilik. Nire ama erditzean hil egin zen, ez baitzegoen
medikuntza aurreratuta. Oraindik nire aita geratzen zen eta
berak hartu zuen ni zaintzeko postua. Baina bera hil egingo
zen beldurrez, Robespierre bere lagun minari eskatu zion
bera hiltzean ni zaintzeko.Urte horretan nire aita hil egin
zen, gaixotasun oso larri baten ondorioz eta ni Robespierren
esku utzi ninduen.
Robespierre gizon ezkongabea zen. Bere ama 9 urte zituela Ni txikia
hil egin zela kontatu zidan, eta familiako batek zaindu egin nintzela
zuen bere 3 anaiekin batera. Beti kontatu ohi izan dit
jakobinoen buru dela eta politikan oso sartuta zegoela. Baina
ba al dakizue zer den hori?? Nik ere ez dakit, baina
batzuetan esaten zidan bezala, garrantzi handia zuen
hemen, Frantzian. Horregatik, askotan auzokidearekin uzten
ninduen Charlotte deiturikoa, emakume alargun zaharra,
gaztetan esplotatua izan zena, eta eskubide minimorik ez
zuena, emakume guztiak bezala.
3. Astelehen batean, afalorduan Robespierrek
alde egin behar zuen etxetik eta
Charlottekin utzi ninduen denboraldi bat. Hilabete
batzuk pasa eta gero itzuli egingo zelakoan. Agurra
oso tristea izan zen, nik asko maite bainuen
Robespierre. Maleta hartu eta oinez joan egin zen.
Denbora luzean egon nintzen atean aurrera begira,
Robespierren gorpua ezin ikusi izan nuen arte.
Robespierre. Afaltzen geundela Charlotte eta ni hitz egiten egon
ginen:
−Nora ote doa Robespierre? – galdetu nion.
− Ez dakit … seguruenik eginbehar ugari izango ditu herrialde honetan.
Itzuliko dela esan du beraz, egon lasai, bueltatzen denean galde
iezaiozu, eta berak kontatuko dizu guztia.
Honekin batera sopa xurrupatzen jarraitu nuen denbora luzean.
Charlottek ez zuen askorik hitz egiten, beraz denbora oso astiro
igarotzen zen. Nik galdera ugari nituen egiteko.
4. −Charlotte, ba al duzu senarrik? Nire
herriko lagunek esaten dute neska eta
mutil bat beti egon behar direla batera eta
… − esan nion kuriositate handiz.
−Ez polit hori, senarra izan nuen… baina
orain dela zenbait urte La Vendée
deituriko gerra batera joan zen, eta ez da
itzuli.
Seguruenik hil egin zuten, baina ez dakit seguru, ez dut mezurik …
Seguraski galdetzen diozu zure buruari ez baditugu seme-alabik, ezta?
Ba bai, badugu mutiko bat Alexandro deiturikoa, baina hura ere
berarekin eraman zuen, ni bakarrik hemen utzita − esan zuen
negarrez.
−Lasaitu zaitez, Charlotte. Ni nago zuri laguntzeko. Gaztea naiz baina
bihotz onekoa. Zuk asko egin duzu nigatik, Robespierre bezala. Zuek
egin nauzue honelako pertsona, eskerrik asko − esan nuen eskerrak
ematen.
−Gu biok batera, bizitza ederra edukitzea lortuko dugu, ikusiko duzu!
−lortu nuen Charlotte posaraztea.
Eta minutu batzuk pasatu ostean, galdera batek buruhauste itzela
nuenarekin, galdetu nion:
5. −Charlotte, zergatik ez noa eskolara Robespierre txikitan joan zen
bezala? Berak beti kontatu izan dit, eskola oso beharrezkoa dela
bizitzan aurrera joateko.
−Baina mutiko hori … baina guk ez dugu diru nahikorik horretarako.
Daukagun diruarekin bizitzeko soilik balio digu. Ni emakumea naiz, ez
didate ezer egiten uzten, eta ezin izan dut eskolara joan neska
nintzelako, eta nire gainerako anaiak eskolara joaten ziren. Beti izan
naiz familian baztertua.
Ixilik geratu nintzen, Charlotten bizitza eta Robespierrena guztiz
ezberdinak izan baitziren, soilik sexua ezberdina zelako, bata gizona eta
bestea emakumea.
Bertan ez nuen lagun askorik eta batzuetan
kalera irteten ginen pilotarekin jolastera.
Horrela zenbait urte igaro ziren eta
Robespierre ez zen itzultzen… Honen ondorioz
Charlotteri itaundu nion, beti bezala:
−Ooohh … non egongo ote da Robespierre −
esan nuen triste.
-Eskutitz bat heldu zen atzo. Irakurri egingo
dizut.
6. Kaixo Charlotte:
Oraindik ezin izango naiz itzuli. Lan ugari dut politikan. Pertsona
ugari hil behar izan ditut, boterea lortzeko. Baina ni bizirik
jarraitzen dut. Gau oro pentsatzen dut zuetan. Nola zaudete? Ondo
ezta? Hori espero dut behintzat. Hemen bidaltzen dizut diru pixka
bat. Ez da askorik beraz ezin izango du Nicolas eskolara joan.
Sentitzen dut benetan. Beti itxaron dut momentu hau Nicolas
hezkuntza bat izan zezan, baina ni zorretan nago eta ez dut diru
askorik. Batzuk nire taldearen eta nire kontra daude, eta gure bila
ari dira. Hurrengo hilabetean itzultzea da nire helburua. Saiatu
egingo naiz, baina ez dakit lortu ahal izango dudan. Zeren gure
bila ari direnak ez aurkitzeko ihes egin beharko dugu, eta ez dakit
nora!
Esaiozu Nicolas-i ondo nagoela eta lasai egoteko, itzuli egingo
naizela.Beti maite izango dut eta beraz oroitu egingo naiz nire
bizitza osoan.
1793-02-12
7. −Itzuli egingo da!!− Esan nuen pozez beterik.
Hilabete batzuk pasatu, eta Robespierre ez zen itzultzen.
Aurreko gutunetik urte bat pasatu zen, eta Charlotteri
Robespierre hil egin zela informatu zioten. Charlottek ez zidan
ezer esan, txikia bainintzen gauza horiek ulertzeko. Eta 14 urte
izan arte itxarotea pentsatu zuen.
Zenbait urte igaro ondoren Charlottek aitortu egin zidan egia,
Robespierre hil egin zela baina ez zekiela zergatik. Charlotte gero
eta gehiago maite nuen. Familia bat ginela bezala tratatzen
ninduen eta oso gustura nengoen berarekin.
15 urte nituela eskolara joaten hasi nintzen, aurreztutako
diruarekin. Nire eskola-kideak ez zuten hezkuntza baloratzen,
beti izan baitzuten. Bere gurasoek oso garrantzitsua zela esaten
zuten, Robespierre bezala, baina beraiek denbora galtzea
besterik ez zela uste zuten. Baina pixkanaka konturatzen joan
ziren zelako garrantzia zuen. Zuek ere pentsatzen duzue eskola
denbora-galtzea besterik ez dela?? Horrela bada aldatu iritziz
lehen-bailen!
8. Charlottekin jarraitu nuen bizitza sinple hori gero eta ederragoa zen.
Eta goiz batean etxeko txirrina jo zuten. Nor zen pentsatzen egon
ginen baina ideiarik ez. Beraz, Charlottek atea ireki zuen. Bertan bi
gizon eder ageri ziren. Hauxe galdetu zuen:
−Nortzuk zarete?
−Zu Charlotte zara? –esan zuen nagusienak.
−Bai, baina zuek nortzuk zarete? errepikatu zuen.
−Ni Michael naiz, zure senarra; eta beste hau Alexandro, zure semea.
−Benetan … benetan?? Itzuli zarete!! Nicolas etorri, mesedez!!
Aurkeztu egingo dizkizut.
−Banoa!!
Nicolas atera heltzen denean, agurtu egiten ditu.
−Kaixo! – Nilcolas-ek agurtzen ditu.
−Egunon!
−Hau Nicolas da, eta Robespierre auzokidea, gogoratzen?? Berak
zaintzen zuen, baina joan behar izan zuen eta niri utzi zidan. Oraindik
hemen dago, eta gurekin geratuko da bizitzen.
−Gu Michael eta Carlos gara, Charlotten senarra eta semea − beraien
burua aurkeztu zuten.
9. Horrela amaitzen da gure historia, pozez betea Charlottentzat, eta
tristuraz niretzat, ez baitut Robespierre berriro ikusiko. Hemendik
aurrera hezkuntza izan nuen eta lan egiten hasi nintzen, dirua
irabazteko eta Charlotte eta Michael nagusia zirenez jada,
mantentzeko. Poz-pozik bizi ginen guztiok batera Arras-eko herrian.
