FRANKENSTEIN ANALYSIS
TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY
The type of documentary that Frankenstein: A
modern myth is mixed documentary as throughout
the documentary there is a selection of interviews,
observation, archive footage and also a lot of
narration
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The narrative structure in this piece is
an Open documentary which shows
signs of non-linear and single stranded
structures
THEMES
The different themes in Frankenstein are:
Gothic
Music
Myth - main
Theatre - main
Drama
Film
Religion
Period
Fantasy
Science - main
CAMERAWORK
In this particular documentary there are a-lot of
different camera angles and lots of different shots
that make the documentary complete, for
example in the documentary the use of rule of
thirds is used in the interviews as it shows more
of a focused interview and the ways that portrays
looking off into the distance on an angle instead
of a straight on head shot. Another part of the
camerawork that is used in Frankenstein is that a
lot of the camera is used doing a close up and
looking at body language and facial expressions
to show the different emotion.
MISE EN SCENE
The Mise-en-scene can be broken down into six
sections, these are costume, lighting,
actors/actresses, makeup, props and setting.
Throughout the documentary all of these things
are demonstrated thoroughly. A part in the
documentary which this can be demonstrated is
when there is an interview taken place in a
laboratory, the setting, the props indicate this
scenery and the interviewee is reflecting the
scenery due to her being a scientist herself
SOUND
The sound in Frankenstein: A Modern Myth plays
a big part on the way that the audience feels
about the current situation, this can be portrayed
by different backing tracks and extract from plays
that support the interviews. Also by using a Voice
of God narration it makes a better sense of
information on the topic. But the difference in
this voice of god narration is that there is not just
one main voice its multiple voices. The other
sounds on the documentary is the different
sound effects that reflect the different themes
topics throughout it all.
EDITING:
The editing used in the documentary are things
like cutting clips where the editor doesn’t use the
entire clip, this can be used mainly in interviews
as using the whole interview can be seen as
boring to the viewers, so whilst the interview
takes place cutting away at the interview to show
extracts keeps an audiences attention. Another
editing technique that is spotted in Frankenstein
is by looking again at the sound effects and how
each of the sound effects create tension and
reflects the mood and the atmosphere that the
editor wants the audience to feel like.
ARCHIVE:
The ways in which the archive is brought out
in the documentary has been done a lot due
to the major throwbacks to different films and
shows different newspaper articles and
flashbacks from different screenplays. This is
done throughout the documentary due to the
themes of period and theatre.
GRAPHICS
The different graphics used throughout the
clip displays peoples name, occupation,
location, title screen witch is related to the
theme of clip.
