Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition from 1540-1542 in search of the fabled seven cities of Cibola in the New World. As one of the early Spanish governors in Mexico in 1535, he sought to explore the Rio Grande River valley, Texas, and Kansas, providing geographic information about the southwest, though he did not establish any permanent Spanish settlements. Despite his explorations, he never found the gold or silver cities he sought and mistreated friendly Native Americans.
