The Philippines performed least among ten participating countries in the TIMSS advanced mathematics assessment, with only 1% of Filipino students reaching the advanced level. Filipino students did relatively better in geometry than overall, and less well in calculus. Most mathematics teachers in the Philippines face challenges related to the breadth and depth of mathematical content knowledge required; addressing varied student cognitive abilities and contexts; managing student behavior and resources; integrating new technologies; connecting mathematics to everyday life; and continuously developing themselves as teachers and role models.
