Four Reasons Why Dirty Politics Create "Bad" Leaders summarizes how human psychology and modern political campaigns contribute to choosing flawed candidates. The document analyzes four reasons: 1) the "we-they" effect creates polarization, 2) a preference for confident, male leaders overlooks narcissism, 3) cognitive laziness prevents proper candidate evaluation, and 4) negative information outweighs positives due to mudslinging. To improve the selection process, the author argues that voters should reject negative campaigning, carefully investigate candidates beyond initial impressions, and recognize candidates have merits in addition to flaws.

How to Engage with the Independent Voter in Virginia: An Insights ReportWolf & Wilhelmine
One system, two parties, many Americans feeling left out. Our political system has fostered an endless shouting match between two ways of thinking. Liberal and conservative values collide while 42% of Americans call themselves independents, uninspired by either option. Because nobody is understanding voters with any real depth.
At W&W, we wanted to tackle this problem by applying the private sector research methodologies that we use on brands like Nike and startups like Bonobos, Harry’s and Oscar. So we started four/twelve, a research initiative to get deep with voters in a new way. Because if we can get these voters motivated around new school candidates, we can change our system for the better.

When I read this DQ question, I couldn't help but think about our country and the recent debates over border security. News outlets around the country have been commentating on the President’s plan for declaring a national emergency over the border wall fiasco. The President of the United States has utilized his legitimate powers in declaring this emergency, and he announced his declaration this morning he plans on signing the legislation this afternoon (Fram, 2019). In the meantime, it was reported that congress has struck a deal to avoid another shut down. I found this bit of information to be rather intriguing. I was happy to see that we will avoid another shutdown, however I couldn't help but think is the President declaring national emergency because he did not get his way?
Unfortunately for the President, he does not lead by example, nor does he embrace all 5 concepts of power that we have been learning about. Instead, he utilizes legitimate powers (as he learns of them throughout his presidency) and through coercive measures. He lacks expert, referent, and reward capabilities. For some this is acceptable. There are those Americans that feel the President has done nothing wrong. I feel that this is acceptable because we live in a democracy and they have the rights to their opinions. However, the point I am trying to achieve is a leader of great magnitude, such as the President of the United States, ought to embrace all 5 concepts of power (Johnson, 2013). There is much diversity in the country and the President should recognize everyone equally and think of the impacts of decisions made. The President cannot just play to the select few citizens that voted for him. All Americans should feel represented by their President. If the President understood the concepts of power and how important it is to lead by example, utilizing referent and expert concepts, he would have more respect and admiration by the people. This would translate and yield more success in his administration.

Discussion 6
The publication of poll results in the days before an election is often criticized because some say that voters are influenced to vote for the "leader" in the poll—the so-called 'bandwagon effect'. Do you think that there is any merit to this criticism?

Partisanship in America has always been led by the two major political parties for the most part. The two parties are republicans and democrats. These parties have represented the nation for a long time, since 1853 actually. President Fillmore was the last president in this country to have no affiliation to neither democrat nor republican but instead the Whig party (Whitehouse). The independence party which is considered a third party has been slowly rising as figure 10.1 depicts. There could be many reasons as to why this happened.
For instance, loss of faith in the democrat and republican party. As we learn in this chapter It takes a lot of consideration to “fit” into one of these partisanships. We learn that family, friends, mindset, ethics and moral dilemmas all play a role when declaring a political party. With the younger millennial generation making up a large portion of the independent party they are coming into play and they require something new. Maybe they do not believe what either party stands for, so they declare themselves independent. “Four in ten voters don’t want to be in a political party. Why? Because parties have become special interests — perhaps the biggest special interests of all” (Independent voting).
Another thing with the independent parties is that maybe they just do not want to be labeled. The millennial generation does not want to be represented by two parties typically in power. Especially with everything that is going on in the world. Deportation of illegal immigrants, separating of families, building of the wall, attacks in Syria, Iran, the whole abortion dilemma. The independent party which is considered to be conservative could be tired of the other party’s agendas. They each believe in something else. Democrats, the party that believes in equal opportunity regardless of race or lifestyle and are considered to be liberal. Republicans who tend to focus on the individualistic mindset and being conservative.
My last theory is that along with the rest of my generation, is that we don’t understand politics to the full extent. Yes, we get the parties, the powers and what comes with it. However why does the government do the things it does. If we cannot apprehend it to the fullest why declare myself something I am not. Therefore, I would side as being independent (hypothetically speaking).

DisscussionI believe that being cognitively rigid and isolate.docxjameywaughj
Disscussion:
I believe that being cognitively rigid and isolated play the largest role in the radicalization of an individual. It is extremely difficult to change the mind of someone who is either set in their extreme beliefs and/or is ignorant to outside facts/statistics or the diverse and nuanced outlooks that other individuals possess. That rigidity combined with isolation with other like-minded people creates a blissful enclave, void of any other ideas that could disrupt or conflict with their ideologies and “rightful” view of the world. With that in mind, I strongly believe that members of the right are far more likely to be radicalized than the left. Through our textbooks and assigned videos, I have learned a lot about key characteristics that are significant in the Republican and Democratic parties. One of those characteristics being that liberals are more open-minded than conservatives. I believe that conservatives' close-mindedness and traditional perspective make individuals less likely to accept or acknowledge other outlooks as correct. This makes a more slippery slope for individuals who may start isolating themselves from other ideas and are heavily influenced by false ideas over long periods of time.
In my opinion, the January 6th insurrection directly reflects the potent racism that thrives in our country. I believe that the terrorist event that transpired is the direct result of the blatant, off-kilter behavior of former president Trump and the encouragement and replication of his actions by our country’s most influential Republican leaders/figures. Domestic terrorists have fervently defended Trump because of what he represents: the prevalence of racism. Through his prejudiced travel restrictions against Muslim and Latin American countries; his inappropriate social media posts that uplift organizations like the KKK while bashing and slandering groups like BLM; and his cancellation of DACA and caging/separation of undocumented families, Trump has clearly and brazenly distinguished himself and his racist beliefs. For many Americans, Trump is a racist emblem that prevails despite the world’s admonishment; for this reason, it is only natural that many Americans would readily jump to the defense of Trump, a man who emboldens racists who are otherwise suppressed by progressive members of society. However, I would like to elucidate that racists have always been alive and well, Trump simply inspired them over the course of his presidency. I would sometimes wonder how our country could transition from such a progressive man like Barack Obama to a man like Donald Trump, but, through my recent understanding of US history, I see that progressives and racists are at a constant battle, neither progressing then backtracking, nor prevailing entirely, but always clashing and evolving with time--even in 2021. As Video 3 presumes, white supremacism and domestic terrorism can be attributed to the statistic that the white race will.

# Internet Security: Safeguarding Your Digital World
In the contemporary digital age, the internet is a cornerstone of our daily lives. It connects us to vast amounts of information, provides platforms for communication, enables commerce, and offers endless entertainment. However, with these conveniences come significant security challenges. Internet security is essential to protect our digital identities, sensitive data, and overall online experience. This comprehensive guide explores the multifaceted world of internet security, providing insights into its importance, common threats, and effective strategies to safeguard your digital world.
## Understanding Internet Security
Internet security encompasses the measures and protocols used to protect information, devices, and networks from unauthorized access, attacks, and damage. It involves a wide range of practices designed to safeguard data confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Effective internet security is crucial for individuals, businesses, and governments alike, as cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity and scale.
### Key Components of Internet Security
1. **Confidentiality**: Ensuring that information is accessible only to those authorized to access it.
2. **Integrity**: Protecting information from being altered or tampered with by unauthorized parties.
3. **Availability**: Ensuring that authorized users have reliable access to information and resources when needed.
## Common Internet Security Threats
Cyber threats are numerous and constantly evolving. Understanding these threats is the first step in protecting against them. Some of the most common internet security threats include:
### Malware
Malware, or malicious software, is designed to harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise a device, network, or service. Common types of malware include:
- **Viruses**: Programs that attach themselves to legitimate software and replicate, spreading to other programs and files.
- **Worms**: Standalone malware that replicates itself to spread to other computers.
- **Trojan Horses**: Malicious software disguised as legitimate software.
- **Ransomware**: Malware that encrypts a user's files and demands a ransom for the decryption key.
- **Spyware**: Software that secretly monitors and collects user information.
### Phishing
Phishing is a social engineering attack that aims to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details. Attackers often masquerade as trusted entities in email or other communication channels, tricking victims into providing their information.
### Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attacks
MitM attacks occur when an attacker intercepts and potentially alters communication between two parties without their knowledge. This can lead to the unauthorized acquisition of sensitive information.
### Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attacks

Four reasons why dirty politics create “Bad” Leaders
1. Four Reasons Why DirtyPolitics
Create “Bad”Leaders
Are we perpetually doomed to pick the lesser of two evils?
Posted Dec 17, 2016 | H.M.F.T.J
It seems like each election cycle we are faced with
the same dilemma: we are forced to choose
between two flawed candidates. We hear people
(and ourselves) asking, “Is this the best that we can
do?” This election, in particular, appears to be the
proverbial, “choosing the lesser of two evils.” How
did we get into this situation?
Sadly, we have only ourselves (and the political
system we support) to blame. Our perceptual biases,
our human tendencies, and the way campaigns are
run all combine to affect both who we choose as
leaders, and how we perceive them.
Here are the 4 primary psychological reasons that
define our current political situation:
1. The We-They Effect. Sometimes called the
in-group, out-group bias, this pervasive
phenomenon makes us see in-group members
(those we identify with) as positive and out-group
2. members as negative. Unfortunately, U.S. political
campaigning has terribly exploited this basic human
tendency through dirty, mudslinging, political
strategies. The result is a polarized, two-party
system where each side sees the other as the enemy.
This has led to a deadlocked Congress, and the
strong divisiveness for no other reason than political
party affiliation.
2. Person Perception Biases. Research on
leadership shows a strong bias preferring strong,
confident, and MALE leaders. We think “leader” and
we think “male.” While that explains the paucity of
women political leaders in the U.S., we are also
drawn to powerful-appearing, confident, “tough
guys.” The problem is that many tough guys are
self-serving narcissists, and we often can’t
discriminate between tough and benign and tough
and dangerous.
3. Cognitive Laziness. We over-rely on our initial
impressions of candidates, and move quickly to a
sort of “blind support” for our chosen (and in-group)
candidate. Our tendency to rely on our initial
judgment means that we don’t do the work needed
to properly and objectively investigate (i.e.,
fact-check) our preferred candidate. Moreover, our
biased perceptual processes cause us to pay
attention to information that supports our initial
3. impression and ignore or discount contradictory
information. As a result, we believe everything and
anything a candidate tells us, once we are
supporting her or him.
4. Power of Negative Information. In person
perception it is well known that negative
information is given greater weight than positive
information. A candidate could have a great deal of
experience and positive qualities, but finding out
something negative about him or her, can quickly
cancel out all the positives. Couple this bias with
negative campaigning—with all sorts of founded
and unfounded accusations of misbehavior—and we
conclude that all candidates are bad. In the end, we
feel like we are picking the lesser of two evils (“Is this
the best that we can do?”).
So, how do we get things back on track?
First, we have to reject the negative
campaigning—the dirty politics. Of course, that’s
not easy, but there was, at least, some sense of
decorum in politics a generation ago. Candidates
have to learn to emphasize their virtues first, and
focus on good versus better (“My opponent has a
plan, but I have a better plan”) rather than slinging
mud.
4. Second, carefully investigate what candidates say,
their plans, and their background and qualifications.
Don’t jump to blind support merely because a
candidate is a member of the in-group, or based on
initial impressions.
Finally, don’t give in to the “dark side” of the
we-they effect. Realize that candidates have
strengths and weaknesses—they are neither “all
good” nor “all bad.”
